This whole story can't get better can it? Well yes it can, Minkel is going to get deeper into professional poker after retirement!

Hasn't he been bluffing the AD that he's a good coach for the past 10 years?

It pains me to say, but this really isn't a change.  Expect more of the same.  Roger is a nice guy, but he is Minkel's guy.  The fact they aren't even interviewing potential candidates says it all.  The Athletic Department has no substantial interest in the Wrestling program and this transition will make the least waves.

Again, expect little to no change.

Rumor has it that Minkel will be taking over the golf program. He seems to do well getting the lowest score at Big 10's and NCAA's.

These small, low-cost programs used to be the life-blood of college wrestling, giving so many kids a chance to have a collegiate athletic experience while earning a meaningful degree.  Very sad news.

You set someone up to fail and then cut the program for its failure--great logic.  Three coaches down in three years indicates something is very wrong institutionally.  These D-III programs are a boon to profit for schools who do it right.  I coached at a small college and the school understood very quickly that we were a HUGE revenue sport.  School was roughly $20,000 a year.  We started each year with about 40-50 guys in the preseason.  You subtract my meager salary, my part-time assistant, all our travel, scholarship, and equipment budget, and we were making far more for the school than football or basketball.  There's more to this story than "lack of success" of coaches who, I am guessing, had little to no institutional support.

Will Jason Bryant, Flowrestling and/or Scott Casber have the AD or an administrator from the school on his show to explain how and when the decision was made and what type of support the school was offering these coaches and the team?

It seems to me the only time that people stand up and fight for a program is when it's on the DI level. Shouldn't all programs in this tiny sport we all participate in on various levels be treated equally? As of typing this, there's no mention of the decision to cut the program at Knox on USAW's site, Flo, Intermat or The Open Mat.

I'm not in the practice of posting e-mails I receive publicly, but let's just say the AD politely declined my interview request.

213 could be Snyder's weight for three cycles. I think he will have to contend with Varner in a Olympic year but after that he will own it for the next 10 years. Even though Varner is not wrestling at his 11 and 12 level he still is a top 5 guy at 213 just not top 3-those guys will be tough to crack for Snyder right now (Yazdani, Gaz, Gads). But Bronze is possible right now or silver with a good draw.

And please wrestle heavyweight for OSU.

Have you ever wrestled greco? It's a completely different sport. I know Lindland likes to say wrestling is wrestling, etc, and yes, of course, greco is wrestling, but the move from FS to GR is absolutely enormous. You have to train your instincts and body to do completely different things.

If you seriously thought what Dake did in that match only warrants a "but still lost...", you have no clue how hard it is to make the transition. How many GR guys who weigh 163 could keep from getting teched by Burroughs?

I repeat, if the world champ could not smash Dake, all the Biseks in the world aren't smashing him either.

I agree even though he is a true 197 to 210 guy-he is a freak and can win 285 next year or 2017. He has already beats Coon a couple of times at 220 so the evidence is there he can do it and not cut weight!

Garrett Lowney won an Olympic medal at 211 and came back to wrestle heavy for Minnesota.  It can be done.  J.D. Bergman wrestles at 213 and went heavyweight as a senior at OSU.  I'd rather see Snyder go heavy and not cut weight in folkstyle.

They signed Roy Williams up to year 2020, this after his program was exposed for fraud on an unprecedented level. I would say UNC has become the UNLV of the East.

Stove_Pipe, yes, Henry Wittenberg was coached by Joe Sapora at City College.  My Dad, Clarence Shapiro, was Henry's teammate. My Dad always spoke so fondly of Henry and Joe, and told me many times what a tremendously positive influence Coach Sapora had on him. He loved the "Coach."  I suppose, in an indirect way, Coach Saparo (through my Dad) had a pretty big influence on me. I met Coach Sapora when I was much younger, and he was older, but still have fond memories of that day because my Dad was so excited for me to meet him.  Coach seemed very personable and charismatic, and if I recall correctly, he greeted me with an arm drag instead of a handshake :-).  Wonderful memories!  And to brag a bit on my Dad (who passed away four years ago after a long and, by any account, terrific and meaningful life), he, Henry and Joe are the only three wrestlers in the City College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Asgarov is a beast and it's great to see that he appears to be settling into the weight that he struggled with since 2012. That kid was unreal in 2012. I'd love to see him move back to the level he wrestled at some three years and 25-ish pounds ago.

That said, Chamizo really loves that whizzer kick and it seems to be about a 50/50 venture for him anymore. Not only did Asgarov use Chamizo's own move to stick him, but Chamizo also gave up four in the semis on the same move against the Romanian.
