Other reasons, too.  As we've all seen, some of that "fodder" turns into some damn tough competitors.  Brian PIcklo at Michigan State didn't even qualify for state as a high school senior and became a 2-time D-I All-American.

Coach _J A lot of the same is now also being said about a lot of women's college teams. The market is flooded. "we often forfeited three, sometimes four weights--there just weren't enough bodies.  Even then, we would have to bump girls around just to fill out the remaining weights (we had no one at 101, a kid who had never wrestled before at 109, and no one at heavyweight (191), and we were thin at other weights where we often had to bump a slightly bigger girl."

There's a lot more to this story, but in general the program was mismanaged at about every level in the time I was there.  When I arrived, we often forfeited three, sometimes four weights--there just weren't enough bodies.  Even then, we would have to bump guys around just to fill out the remaining weights (we had no one at 125, a kid who had never wrestled before at 133, and no one at heavyweight, and we were thin at other weights where we often had to bump a slightly bigger guy up).  I got to recruit the next year we had a full but very young roster (that recruiting class was ranked in the top 20, something the school had never done before).  Too many other details I'm skipping, but you get the idea.  That first year, the D-II school I used to coach at dualed us and kicked the you know what out of us.  Some people get stuck on the idea that "it's D-I so it has to be better."  Simply not the case in many circumstances.

I agree.  He seems to have done much better at the collegiate level than his high school record would have suggested.  I hope he qualifies for the NCAA tournament and makes some noise there.

My mom was a first-gen title IX athlete. She played b-ball for UNLV. However, she was recruited by a bunch of other schools for sports she had never played. UCLA wanted her to play volleyball. I know that her school, Eufaula, didn't have a team, and I'm fairly certain that the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association didn't even sanction volleyball at the time. Some other school wanted her to run track, another to play tennis.
In the mid-90's, the same stuff was still happening. In fact, Coach J's crew scenario played out at the school I went to. If I remember correctly, the new women's crew team had 7 full scholarships. This girl from my poetry class was a cockson with a full-ride. Meanwhile, we had about 9 (I'm not sure if we were fully funded yet) for about 30 guys. As it is today, no one -- with maybe the exception of returning AA's -- had a full-ride. The money was cut up in a hundred different ways. And, as it is today, any money given could be taken away the next year if you didn't produce.
I'm not telling anybody anything they don't already know. It's just crazy that a student -- who to her credit wrote some beautiful sonnets -- could get 40k for saying "Stroke!" But, I guess, the same could said for giving students money for being able to beat people up on Resilite.

I'll stick to current era of Michigan kiddos:

-Gage Hutchinson @ 285.  I always hoped he would do better than he did.  I have a feeling had he gone a different route(division) he would have been a multi-time champ at the tweener weight class(what is it... 220 or 230?).  Never got appropriate size or kept his speed he utilized in HS up that heavy.
-Ben Bennett.  I expected multiple championships from this guy.  He always had it skill-wise, however he never seemed to have that elite athleticism.  Much like Justin Oliver...
-Justin Oliver.  He actually did better in college than I thought he would-I thought he peaked about junior year in HS.
-Any of the St. Johns/Massa Maniac guys.  The only one that gets a mulligan for me is Logan, because he has fought through his injuries.  Jordan Thomas actually beat Gabe Dean decisively(more than once!) their senior year and he did it while he was seriously injurred.  Wohlfert, Taylor Massa(should have focused on wrestling rather than cutting to 165 and he'd have been in that 174lb crop of Storley, Kokesh, Evans, Brown tier), Schmitt, Pennell, Whitford, Hayden, Arthur, Hall etc. SO many elite guys and the only one who has a chance to redeem the squad right now is Logan Massa.
-Adam Coon.  I didn't give enough credit to his sheer mass of frame.  It took him to immediate true-frosh success and I still didn't think he'd put together quite the finish to his career as he did.  He never seemed to have that elite speed or strength at the weight for me.  His frame made it so they were elite, though.
-Kanen and Zehlin Storr.  I expected Zehlin to be about what Kanen has been and I expected Kanen to transcend.  I didn't think Ian Parker(who I had low expectations because of the previous St. Johns crew) would be on the same level and absolutely expected Kanen to be a factor by now.
-Hesperia/Hudson/New Lothrop toons.  Even for small schools these schools pump out so much small-school talent and consistency that I expected much more than what we've gotten.  The Zeerips and Marrys specifically.
-Gabe/Max Dean-As mentioned above, I thought Gabe was about as polished a product as we'd seen coming out of Michigan in a while.  He made a leap his GS season.  I wish we had seen him on the senior level afterwords more.  Max as well.  I saw him as a lesser version of his brother, and truth is they're entirely different wrestlers that have an unstoppable drive and gear for improvement.
-Mason Parris.  After seeing him DESTROY Whitman at 220 then get destroyed by Cassioppi two weeks later I was very worried that we had a friggen tweener for our Coonsquad replacement.  Not disappointed thus far.
-Rayvon Foley.  Pleasantly surprised that he could step right in and compete for an AA position as a true frosh.
-A-Hris of MSU.  This kid is a go-getter.  Never says no and will never be outworked by anyone.  I thought he peaked sometime early in HS and despite his drive seemed to have difficulty adjusting up in weight.  As of right now I wouldn't be surprised to see him squeak out an upset or three at NCAAs this year.
-Marten and Simon-Both of these toons at their ideal weights surprised me this year.  I thought they may have been 'damaged goods' due to recent turnover(4 lighter weight AA contenders leaving CMU0 however they're proving me wrong this year.  The entire CMU room seems to have made vast improvements over the last season and I am absolutely thrilled.
-Ben Freeman.  Little brother Nick was not supposed to be bigger or better at this stage in their respective careers.
-Jack Medley.  You just can't help but root for this guy.  Nonstop.

Ramblings, I know... but those familiar with Michigan wrestling will relate.
