Another trip back in time, as I tell the stories of two successful wrestlers of the past whose lives ended tragically -- Oklahoma State's Dick Beattie, and Cornell College's Rodger "the Milkman" Snook...

Good question.  At this point, I'm just glad the mats haven't turned green overnight!

I'd be more interested on if they identify as a wrestler and/or the impact they felt wrestling had on their lives. More interesting to me than how successful of a competitor they they were.

He's a chump but he wrestled a little.  At least he says so.  You can never trust these guys though.

    Storytime...

Will Rogers World Airport, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the wee hours of Sunday morning, March 23, 2014...the night earlier, led by national champions Ed Ruth and David Taylor, Penn State won their fourth straight NCAA title. The entire Penn State squad boarded their flight, and suddenly, third-place finisher Nico Megaludis was wheeled off the plane on a stretcher, with some (seemingly) serious breathing issues. Guess which coach (hint: the greatest collegiate wrestler of all-time) accepted the short straw and stayed behind in Oklahoma City while the rest of the team went back to State College to receive a hero's welcome?

I would trust any of the current Division I coaches with my son, frankly, but things like that stand out in my mind positively.

Thanks for sharing I have always been a fan and history of our great sport.  Growing up in Waterloo, IA I was fortunate to have sat in living rooms of some of the greats and listened to stories of wrestling greats such as Tom Peckam, the Buzzard brothers plus countless stories on West Waterloo studs.  Good times!

Long ago, college wrestling coaches wouldn't let their wrestlers into the weight room ("It'll make you muscle-bound!")... yet there were wrestlers known for their strength and incredible physiques. Here's a photo-feature about a handful of these mat greats... https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/16421

Learned today that Jon Llewellyn, 1991 NCAA heavyweight champ for the University of Illinois, is battling early onset dementia. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Jon and his family.

Being familiar with FTD in my own family, this is truly tragic for this 47-year-old former athlete who beat Kurt Angle twice in college -- once to win the NCAA title. Prayers for the Llewellyn family.

Nearly 18k out of his 24k goal in 1 day.  Not to mention the various GoFundMe's for our Olympic Team members.  The wrestling community (family) is truly full of amazing, and generous people.

ideamark reacted to WillieBoy in Kurdelmeier, Gable and Iowa Titles
Gary Kurdelmeier was made Head Coach at Iowa after being an assistant. One of his first priorities was hiring Dan Gable as an assistant. Iowa with them at the helm started winning big time, something the program had never done before.

Kurdelmeier turned over the training to Dan Gable while concentrating more on strategy and promotion. After four years, 3 league titles and two NCAA Titles he moved to Athletic Director and Gable was made Head Coach.

Would Gable have been as successful without the time under Coach Curdelmeier? From all appearances the two worked well together and apparently without jealousy or problems. Both worked hard and Iowa Wrestling skyrocketed in attendance as well as winning. Would it have taken longer or not happened if one or the other had not been there?
