  1. Persecuted and humiliated? A mad search to punish? Overkill indeed. So they wear a little blue ribbon insignia. So what? Doesn't sound all that humiliating or punishing to me, but if any players don't like all that persecution and humiliation, they can transfer to any other school that will have them with no loss of eligibility. Besides, the school leadership could make sure the little blue ribbons get covered up, but covering things up is what got PSU into this mess to begin with, isn't it.
  2. Yeah, but that's pro football and pro baseball in Cleveland, not rural Pennsylvania. PSU wrestling IS in the position to capitalize, but it's only one of many great teams at Penn State. It's almost as likely that the volleyball team or the field hockey team should capture Penn State fans hungry to feel good about something. Arguably, Pennsylvania has the most wrestling talent in the country, and the PSU wrestling team is coming off of back-to-back National championships, and yet Rec hall seats, what, 5,000 people? The football stadium seats 100,000+ and it was always filled, wasn't it? That's a big difference. When will the awesome wrestling team begin to outdraw the dismal basketball team at Penn State? Maybe wrestling should move into the bigger venue and have the b-ball team move into Rec Hall.
  3. Actually, I think it will work in reverse. I think the majority of Penn State students will become more apathetic about all sports in general, now that the football program will be crippled for the next 4+ years and Paterno is gone. They'll still be excited about their studies because PSU is a great school, but they'll have a more balanced attitude about sports, which I gather is what the NCAA sanctions intended to do. Of course, you PSU wrestling nuts who hang out on boards like this one will still be fan(atics), just like the rest of us are for our teams. And they may fill Rec Hall more consistently, like last year. And you will be favored to win another National Championship again this year.
  4. Don't know if I'm agreeing with you or not myself. ;) I just try to support the "student" part of "student athlete". Over the years, I remember some really great wrestling teams that weren't always so great in the classroom, or at least those were the rumors. I was very pleasantly surprised at the academic improvements on the Hawkeye team since Tom Brands took over, and I'd like to see that portion of his incentives made even stronger. Like you, I love incentive clauses in contracts, and I'm really happy that Brands got the deal. I suspect that Terry Brands is already rather well-paid by Big Ten assistant wrestling coach standards, but I hope that he and the other assistant wrestling coaches receive incentives for performance too.
  5. A. Many of the Big Ten schools "travel well". B. If PSU desires to leave the conference after this, they should be encouraged to do so. and MOST importantly, C. PSU needs the Big Ten much more right now than vice versa. Without the Big Ten, they are another Div1a school with ambitions to make it back into big time football with Michigan & Co.
  6. Looks like Penn State Wrestling will be fine. Penn State Football? Not so much.
  7. With respect to wrestling, tossing Penn State out of the Big Ten has big implications. If you want to be the best, you have to wrestle the best, and right now, many of the best wrestlers are in the Big Ten or maybe the Big 12. And those who aren't in those conferences. but have great wrestling (Lehigh, Cornell) won't be welcoming Penn State into their conferences any time soon for one reason or another. Maybe tossing Penn State out of the Big Ten would be more crippling to the wrestling program as the 60 million dollar fine.
  8. I'm not a P State fan, but I know quite a few, and punishing folks who aren't responsible and are not connected to the football program is just mean-spirited. Don't you think that most PSU grads wish they had a time machine so they could go back and save those kids? If you don't think that every big sports school in America has some baggage, you're naive. I'm not suggesting that its all as bad as Penn State's, but the NCAA is letting everyone know that they have to clean up their act. This isn't just about punishing Penn State, but about sending a message to all the other schools that the sort of crap that got covered up at Penn State will not be tolerated, period. "BAGGAGE"??? baggage is SMU paying players. baggage is Alabama boosters trying to persuade HS coaches to send players there. Baggage is Ga Tech knowingly playing ineligible players, Baggage is THE U in the 80-90"s. Penn State doesnt have baggage. They allowed young boys to be molested on campus over and over again. What the NCAA does to them should be the last thing people are thinking about. And that's why I said that it probably wasn't all as bad as Penn State, but it might be someplace. I understand your outrage, but if you think that truly evil crap like this can ONLY happen at Penn State, you are wrong. That's why the NCAA (and also the Big Ten) is going to throw the book at Penn State, to set an example. But if you really think some biology professor at Penn State knew about this and covered it up too, you're just looking for someone else to take your anger out on.

  10. Joe Pa wasn't fired for high standards and high graduation rates. Some coaches may try to game the system, but the growing numbers of Hawkeyes who get recognized for academic achievement these days is not a cover up. I'm happy for them.
  11. I think Tom Brands is a really great coach, but I'd like his contact to give more $ for academic success and a little less for longevity. How about some additional incentives for a top-ten APR team? Or a 90% graduation rate? APRs and graduation rates are a big deal, and we want our coaches to motivate their guys to be great students as well as great wrestlers. That said, Coach Brands and AD Barta have done an excellent job of improving the Hawkeye's academic performance via the "wrestling lifestyle" and smarter recruiting. As for longevity, there are some other coaches at other universities who seem to stick around no matter how poorly their teams perform. Are these guys getting "longevity" bonuses too?
  12. Gotta disagree Gonzo ;) 1. Jesus (always dominates every weight class) 2. Dake (way behind #1, but who isn't?) 3. Taylor (much, much better than OTT would indicate) 4. McDonough (2 titles, 3 finals, but still underrated?) 5. Ruth (great year, may climb) 6. Steiber (big talent, auspicious start, may climb) 7. Howe (tough guy, but gone a year) 8. Kilgore (can he hang with this list?) 9. Nelson (may climb if he wrestles up to potential) 10. Oliver (gotta get through someone higher up this list?) As far as Abe Lincoln, if he's coached by Grant, he makes the list up by McD somewhere (aggressive, "He fights.") If he's coached by McClellan, he doesn't. (No offense.)
  13. Thanks for bringing up the Mt. Mercy Gym, GG. CR could use an NAIA wrestling team. I could see a Juco team at Kirkwood as well. An interesting tourney would be one with an Eastern Iowa team from each Division. I was in Montana recently, and there is another state that could really use a D1 team. I would guess that you'd have to fund an additional women's team just to get a wrestling team, though. Budgets are tight everywhere. Oregon should be ostracized.
  14. Hang in there, Jay. Thanks for all that you do, and I wish you a speedy recovery!
  15. Been following McDonough since he was in junior in high school. He's a sharp, tough guy with a big heart and a terrific attitude. I'd like to see him at 133 with a touch more power added on. Could he whip Stieber or Oliver? I dunno, but I'd like to watch him try. Whatever he decides to do, expect him to approach it in a careful, intelligent way.
  16. No one on this forum is as good at beating dead horses as T9. It's a gift.
  17. Wow, a whole month? Maybe he was the guy with high standards I saw hang'in out at the Deadwood back in the day. Maybe Title9 will break into another rant about Kevin Jackson. Oops.
  18. Ooh, somebody has me in the dreaded "Claw". I think I'll play along. Well headshuck, Frank Molinaro, David Taylor and Ed Ruth are going to have to do much, much, much, much, much, much worse than expected for any team to deny them as BIG 10 or NCAA champions. Nah, I think he's got you in the "Sleeper" and it's working. Thought your assessment of the Hawks was dead on for the most part, except to add that not that much, much, much will probably happen by NCAA tourney time. Thanks, Johnny.
  19. Those are silly rumors from years ago. You're venting own agenda, and that time is way past. Get over it. It's 2010-11, and Iowa is rebuilding after graduating so many seniors. Takes time. Congrats to Penn State and Missouri for their fine performances at the holiday tournaments!
  20. That is simply wrong. If you had used the entire post, you would have found that we go other places than this board to talk about the team: "There are other message forums specifically for Iowa fans where we can discuss our hopes and speculate without having to deal with the trolls." This board is populated by trolls who will disappear as their team tanks. We would be wise to follow jmcginness's advice. Carver Hawkeye will have more than 10,000 fans for the Iowa-ISU meet tonight. How many fans will show up at your favorite school for the next meet?
  21. Read the schedule. It says yes.
  22. That's a perfect summation of why I haven't joined in on this group stupidity (until now.) Championships are earned on the mat. They're not bestowed by the media, nor won through some online essay contest. We either have the horses or we don't, and then its better luck next year.
  23. You are confusing accomplishments with style. I didn't realize they give points for style.
  24. Another NCAA two-time champ with 7 losses or less? Sure. Will there ever be another Cael Sanderson? Maybe not.
  25. Obviously, you haven't been to much more of Iowa than I-380, But I can't fault anyone for seeking their happiness somewhere else as well. I live in the East, and I miss Iowa very much.
