Zain wins it all in 2008. Retherford will probably finish his career on a 100 match+ winning streak and being recognized as one of the best ever. Metcalf's pace would keep it close, but Retherford is a more technically gifted wrestler who absolutely mauls people on top. None of those 2008 wrestlers, who are all studs, could handle that pressure on top. Does anyone believe that Retherford will get majored by someone in the next couple of years? He probably won't even lose let alone get majored like Metcalf did.
I just posted this on another thread.... in EVERY sport it is becoming more clear how little the regular season means... all that matters is March... dont really care if he goes undefeated or not as long as he puts on a great show.
There are a lot of unknowns, especially with regards to injuries, that can and may affect many of the top guys performances in March. Delgado, Dutton, H. Stieber, Ian Miller, Brascetta, D. Alton and Spencer Myers will all have cobwebs to shake off, due to limited mat time, if they want to AA again. BoJo and Massa have also had limited time. Predicting 8 AA's per weight, this early in the season, may as easily be done by throwing darts at the top 20 rankings per weight!
Still, here goes:
1.)Delgado- He is a winner. Cerebral and Athletic. If healthy, with M. Perry in his corner he wins #3.
2.)Garrett- I just don't see the refs letting Waters kneel most of the match and I don't see anyone else beating him at this weight.
3.)Dance- This kid has a lot of heart and is tenacious. He wins a National Championship before his career is over.
4.)Waters- If he still had Henson I could put him higher.
5.)Gilman- Just not offensive enough for me to put him higher.
6.)Tomasello- Blows out everyone below but can't sneak past those above.
7.)Peters-The strongest guy at the weight.
8.)Cox-Been there before, will be again.
1.)Dardanes-This is probably the least confident I am in a champ. I just don't see anyone at 133 distancing themselves from the pack.
2.)Schopp- See the above description.
3.)Brewer- He brings his best in March.
4.)Clark- May very well be Iowa's best wrestler and finisher.
5.)Beckman-Nothing flashy but super solid and knows how to win.
6.)Richards-Looked tough at Midlands.
7.)Hall-Moving up a weight doesn't seem to have hurt him.
8.)Gulibon-Has shown enough improvement to reach the podium.
1.)Stieber- Move along. Nothing to see here.
2.)Port- I can't believe Carter was the one at 149 moving back down. He made Carter look weak and tiny.
3.)Carter- A true goer. Very fun to watch.
4.)Dutton- I really like this kid. Hope he comes back healthy soon and gets some mat time.
6.)Dardanes-He is mean and I like that, but he just seems to be missing something that makes me hesitate to endorse him.
8.)Mayes-Brian Smith is coaching the wrong school!
1.)Tsirtsis-A lot of similarities to D. Schlatter. As long as he avoids the injuries of the aforementioned he will be wrestling on Saturday night 3 more times.
2.)Houdashelt- Brian Smith is coaching the wrong school!
3.)H. Stieber- Healthy, I would put him at the top. 90% I have him 3rd.
4.)Habat-He may be the 3rd best wrestler on his team, but he is the most fun to watch.
5.)Villalonga-BOOORING, but too good to never make the podium. See Grajales.
6.)Sorenson-Has the Eye of the Tiger!
7.)Bright-May be a tad undersized, but very talented.
8.)Pantaleo-Homer pick, but has the pedigree.
1.)Ness-I am torn between him and Green. I see them as 1a.) and 1b.) but that is cheating!
3.)Miller-Depends on motivation. As good as anyone when he opens up.
4.)Brascetta-I like V Tech wrestlers. They have an in your face style that is endearing.
6.)D. Alton-Gotta get another AA for the Alton name.
8.)Lavallee-Brian Smith is coaching the wrong school!
1.)Dierenger-The best wrestler, not named Stieber, in DI.
3.)Sulzer-Best of the rest.
5.)Harger-I doubted him last year, I won't do it again.
6.)Moreno-A major reason K. Jackson still has his job.
7.)Walsh-Very fun to watch, but you don't win the DI championship with a headlock.
8.)Morse-Another homer pick!
1.)Storley-Quite possibly the most dangerous wrestler in the bottom position(as long as the ref doesn't allow the dreaded Brown/Evans ankle ride).
3.)Evans-Looks a tad burnt out to me. Still, the pale, mustachioed Hawkeye will finish his career off with a win.
4.)Wilps-I thought he had Brown beat. I think he gets it done in March.
5.)Epperly-4x AA here he comes.
6.)Brown- His style and demeanor has made me drop him half a step.
7.)Eblen- Brian Smith is coaching the wrong school!
8.)Walters- He shows up in March.
1.)Dean-Got his hiccup out of the way.
2.)Dechow-More powerful than everyone not named Dean.
4.)Brooks-Tenacious. Everything Iowa predicates itself on.
7.)Stauffer-Has the tools to get it done.
1.)Cox-His gas tank is his kryptonite. Problem is, Superman still seems to win when his arch enemies have kryptonite.
2.)Gadson-Best of the rest.
3.)Schiller-Goer, just not as talented as the 2 above.
4.)Burak- Only the 3 above will score on this tree.
5.)McIntosh-As talented as all above, just not big enough.
6.)Snyder-Learning curve for the freshman. Will be a deadly Sophomore.
8.)McCall-Big Boy with Big Talent.
1.)McMullan-3,2,3,1! Hell of a career.
2.)Gwiz-Fun to watch.
3.)Telford-Too big for everyone else.
4.)Coon-Getting his losses out of the way early this year.
5.)Marsden-Has steadily improved.
6.)Medberry-Another very active Hwt.
7.)Walz-Have I mentioned I like V Tech wrestlers?
8.)Myers-Helped Maryland Football have a respectable first year in the B1G and should do the same for them in Wrestling.
Actually, one of my favorite matches was the pummeling current Sacred Heart assistant Derek Moore put on Ryan Lang in the 2007 141-pound final. For one, it showed that, unlike a lot of other sports, with wrestling, blowouts can be (and often are) exciting, and second, it was largely unexpected.
