Guess you don’t like Nick Suriano. Did you get bullied by a short Italian kid from New Jersey when you were in high school?

Accept that there may be circumstances that we don't fully know or understand, and avoid passing judgement on others.  It's one thing to speak out about a specific action, quite another thing to draw general conclusions about someone without a full understanding of the person and the situation.

“He’s been an intricate part of Cornell wrestling’s success story for the last 12 years,” said head coach Rob Koll. “Our loss is SDSU’s gain!”

“Damion’s an amazing coach, and an awesome person,” Diakomihalis told The Sun. “He’s been in the program for my whole wrestling career, and it’s sad to see him go but this is an amazing opportunity for him and he’s going to do great things at SDSU.”

“Only bad thing about being surrounded by talented and successful people is that they often move on to face bigger challenges,” Max [Dean] wrote on Instagram. “I have been so blessed to get to learn under [Hahn] not only as a wrestler but also as a man.”

The Mat Forums Medical Team has spoken.

Administrator:  Can we retroactively have Yianni Diakomihalis removed from the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships and have his title distributed to another 141 lb. wrestler in the tournament?

    Thanks!

In the alternative Bizzaro World, Koll would have pulled Yianni, (ignoring his protests) immediately during the Heil match and had him default out of the tournament.  Next season, Yianni would have transferred to Rutgers.

Interesting ideas but I hate the idea of putting people on their feet after so much time(like freestyle).  I think some of the recent stalling calls have made it harder to just ride and even a good top wrestler needs some time to turn a man.  Think how many fewer pins there would be if we put them on their feet after 20-30 secs.  Zain takes a good 40 secs just to get his guy flat in many cases.

It might be worth noting - the context of this comment was within the regular news update that Rob sends out to Cornell fans; as such - the tone of the newsletters is often (always?) a bit jocular, humerous, and somewhat tongue in cheek.  It makes for some entertaining readings, and for Cornell insiders who understand Rob's demeanor - not at all offensive.  However, some outsiders who read copies of the text (especially when taken out of context) may find his tone a bit too over-the-top.

Allen Brown used to post Rob's updates regularly on the Cornell Forum.  After Allen passed away, I took it upon myself to continue that practice.  I don't think Rob minds; at least, he hasn't threatened to send Coach Dean after me yet!

Make it 11 with Ohio State earning their first title in 2015.

I always enjoyed seeing Jay at a variety of events through the years, esp the NCAA Tournament, and felt I always learned something in every conversation.

I think this is a good observation or summation of the keep the train a rolling theory by Big Apple

Rather than decades I might reduce it down to recruiting classes or cycles tied to titles since 2000 or in the new millenium.

While the dominant team until Penn State hasn't been producing championships for decades they have for classes or recruiting cycles to a degree when you look at first or second place finishes.

    2000 Iowa(20)  116 Iowa State 109½
    2001 Minnesota(1)  138½ Iowa  125½

    Team  Titles Runner Up
    Iowa  4 3
    Minnesota 3 4
    Oklahoma State 4 2
    Penn State 7 0
    Ohio State 1 4
    Iowa State 0 3
    Cornell  0 2
    Michigan 0 1

The difference with Penn State right now is that they did not get knocked off by Oklahoma State in 2013, Minnesota in 2014, or Ohio State in 2018. If not mistaken when Ohio State won in 2015 was the PSU redshirt year that set up the most recent three peat.

Without going back and looking at the annual third to fifth place or top ten finishes, I would argue that the eight teams above that placed first or second have consistently been top five and top ten teams as well and the top eight teams of the new millenium might not look any different than above.

The exception to the top 8 above is probably Iowa State who has taken a step back after Cael left as a team. At the same time Sanderson is all over the Cyclones. He was on the 2000 and 2001 ISU teams that took second and sixth, training at ISU in 2002 when they took second, and an assistant at ISU for several years before taking over in 2007 and his teams placed second, third, and fifth.

I thought by bumping one of the threads he started I could give him a salute and allow him to live on by bringing a discussion he started to today. For those of us who have been around for awhile, isn't it appropriate for The Historian to be in the discussion after the NCAA Tournament?

Billy Hoyle is very confused about the reason why the Ivies don't allow redshirts.  Redshirts are not allowed because if athletes were permitted a 5th year in school, it would be tantamount to providing them with another year of financial aid that is not available to non-athletes.  However, deferred admission, or taking a leave of absence, is a path available to ALL students, and so acceptable under Ivy League rules.

The Ivies are not against their athletes being competitive.  The Ivies simply require that athletes don't get special financial benefits through the University that is not available to all students.

I hope this helps Billy in his path to enlightenment.
