  1. AMEN TO THAT! He sent me a shirt and a signed card from the wrestling team for my birthday one year. Also invited me to hang out with his team and parents following the DII Nationals in Kearney back in 2007. Great ambassador!
  2. Mankato typically in the past has only been allowed to have so many in the room. Some programs don't have to worry about that and have upwards of 70. I think it is good that at least they are giving guys a chance. Maybe they don't have tons of money to sign a bunch of kids and are dealing with more cuts. Giving options to kids that may want to try out isn't a bad option. Heck their footbal team has a 2x top 4 finisher from Wisconsin that is only weighing 160, so they could probably nab some kids better suited for wrestling by at least extending this invitation.
  3. Minnesota State Wrestling to Host Walk-On Try-Outs Mankato, Minn. - The Minnesota State University wrestling team is hosting a one-time try-out on Tuesday, September 11 at 3:15 p.m. in the Rummy Macias Wrestling Complex (TC 065, basement of the Taylor Center). Information contact: Jim Makovsky (Head Wrestling Coach): 507.389.6521 or Adam Aho (Asst. Wrestling Coach): 507.389.5720
  4. I will be very interested to see where Chinonuma fits into the picture for Oklahoma State this year. He was 11-0 in opens last year and pinned Dallas Baily in the finals of one of those tournaments. Solid kid, but Caldwell and Perry are there at 65 and 74. Get a cut to 157 and be healthy there, and you might have something, otherwise beat those guys or jump a few weights to find the lineup.

  6. DII's are a blast. You know that if you win your regional, you have a 4th place finisher in another region. Sometimes studs get beat out...you have to make top 4 to go to Nationals, so the politicking of wildcards is thrown out. There was a 3rd place All American as a junior for FHSU that didn't qualify his senior season, and the kid was a 3 time All American overall if I recall (twice at the NJCAA level). I have been to a few DII's, I really enjoyed the 2001 championships held at Greeley, CO. I think that was the most insane down to the wire tournament. UNO and UCO tied for 3rd, and the team title came down to NDSU and SDSU and to make it more thrilling, the Defending National Champion was a member of one of the teams and the opponent was a huge dude. They went flying off the platform, but later on a big pin to win the NCAA title for NDSU if I recall. Great year too in seeing my teammate, freshman Cole Province win his 1st of 4 NCAA titles. DII in Omaha (I am guessing it was 2005 as I was on the tailend of all my chemo and radiation)I saw one of my top 5 all time college matches when Shane Perkey of Indy took on Adam Keiswetter of UNK. Those that saw this match know it was a scrap. It was tied going into overtime with a wild score of 12-12 or something like that. Keiswetter hits a twister for like the 3rd time in the match and sticks Perkey in OT. Keiswetter lost in the 1st round of NCAA's that year and rebounded with 5 straight falls to win the Gorrian Award. I own a Keiswetter DVD and am glad that match is on it. This tournament was very emotionally draining in other ways too. UCO had no finalists that year and finished outside the top 10 for the first time in over 30 years, however a few nights prior one of my favorite experiences was attending the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for DII wrestling, which included several UNO and UCO alumns, David James (my old UCO coach being one of them). I was deeply moved that DJ allowed us to sit at the table with him for this major event. My teammate Josh Leadingfox had just lost his longtime girlfriend that season due to an illness and he battled galantly to earn All American status. Pointing to the heavens before going out for his 5th place match where he would defeat a young Tervel Dlagnev. Outside of the UNK's and UCO's and UNO's dominating that event, the impressive run by the UNCP team landing 3 in the finals was fantastic, however the most overshadowed and inspiring...Kortney Lake of Adams State. Anybody who saw Lake wrestle at 100% knows he was a beast. He still qualified for Nationals giving up tons of weight (I believe he weighed in close to 15 or more under the 141 class) and was a match away from placing. Lake was a true inspiration, and he is very much missed by all who appreciate wrestling. 2007- Was the WTF moment. UCO came to Kearney and landed 5 in the finals and left tons of heads scratching with some great upsets along the way, nothing like knocking off the defending National Champion from UNK in the first round at his home (Henning at 33). Only going 1-4 in the finals was rough though as an alumn, but a great experience overall. 2010- Almost missed the birth of my son because I road tripped up with Curtis Chenoweth's mom from Wichita and left my car there. Chenoweth was wrestling for Newman at the time and had a long injury plague career coming to an end. I will never forget I am sitting in the stands getting texts from my in-laws that my wife was heading to hospital, next thing I knew fully dialated. My ride didn't want to come home that night, but lucky for me I was able to hitch a ride with the Finn's of UCO and got to my car at 6:45 am and made it to Chanute by 8:15 (that's hauling). Son was born 9:03. I almost ran out of gas!!!! 2012- Was invited to go...wife was preggo and ready to pop again...chose to be safe this time. 2013- I plan on going, but with 1st birthday of daughter coming up we will see. A kid I coached in high school will be gunning on making it to Nationals, and I have a few former NJCAA kids I have helped along with other random kids I have helped get to DII programs that may make it to Bama.
  7. I think the numbers you will see will surprise you. I believe the UNK, UCO, UIU and Mankatos of the world travel pretty well typically , as do the schools from the Northeast like UPJ, Gannon, and Findlay. Southeast puts a bunch of teams in driving distance that in my opininon don't travel that well, mainly because not a lot of numbers are qualifying when put in a meat grinder of a regional. They way I understand this situation, Newberry will host in Alabama *(although a SC school, it appears that due to the capitol of the state recognizing and flying the Confederate Flag, the state of South Carolina is barred from hosting within the borders of their state for a championship event) I was thinking that a great turnout may happen and was anticipating seeing great numbers for Alabama just from wrestling fans with no college affiliation from the Southern fans alone!
  8. Goodbye Cleveland, OH....hello Birmingham, AL!
  9. UPDATE #2: While it is not me, the person that has been offered the job had success in SE Kansas area this last year as well, in fact I would say he was the top coach in this part of the state based on how his team did throughout the year.
  10. I only know of 2 former UCO Bronchos that wrestled that have been in the Pro Wrestling circuit, although I know 3 total alumns (friend of mine Stephen has been wrestling in Mid South in Memphis for last 10 years following UCO graduation). I know Mo Lawal who would finish up at Oklahoma State his senior year, has just signed with TNA Wrestling and is going to do a cooperative deal if I recall to also fight in Bellator at the same time he is doing the Pro Wrestling. I want to say Edwin Lorne a former Broncho National Champ played the roll of a hot dog vendor about 10 years ago on an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, and got tossed into a wall by Kane. I may have the wrong UCO alumn on that one though.
  11. I will chime in before I have to head off to job #2 for the evening. I look at it this way, I was born in 1980 and it seemed that throughout the 80's it was the Hulkamania era. There were toys, cartoons and tons of televised shows of "pro wrestling". It sucked you in to see these "Super Hero types". It was pro wrestling that lead me to have interest in amateur form. Bob Backlund and Iron Sheik were both former wrestlers on the mats which I found out later. As I stuck it out on the amateur mats, I grew appreciation for WWE/WCW and other organizations because before the UFC/WEC and so on, those organizations would take interest and employ our amateur athletes. Heck in 2010 when I almost missed the birth of my son, I was at UNO''s DII National Championships and in the crowd actively recruiting was one of the Brisco brothers from the WWE, who back in his day was a decorated wrestler for Oklahoma State along with his brother. Danny Hodge and other greats had a venue to move on and support their families, and now people like Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin, and Jack Swagger (Jake Hager from OU) can entertain and make an honest living. Sell outs? I think not. Just using athletic talents for entertainment value now and making good money for it.
  12. Big 12 at time of eligibility exhausted correct? Nebraska is now Big 10
  13. How about international wrestlers that won gold? We got a few of those that wrestled in the US?
  14. Best post all time in my opinion on this site. Hard to believe that has been so long ago now. I was a Junior in College! Yikes!

  16. UPDATE: Per the email I received today from the AD/Head Football Coach, they have hired a coach, but will not announce until September.
  17. I am interested in finding out where Walker Clarke and Colin Hase formerly of Labette and FHSU wind up. They were both Juco All Americans and DII qualifiers this past year. Have 1 year left of eligibility.
  18. That wouldn't be a bad guess. I didn't apply though, there was another job in Oklahoma that had my interest with possible teaching though (high school level)
  19. Got word today that the NEO A&M program which will be NJCAA level and start competing in 2013-14 season has closed its search for a head coach. No word yet on who it is, a buddy of mine was an applicant and received an email informing him the spot had been filled. Anybody out there have a clue as to who it is?
  20. UPDATE!!!: Raven Duals will take place on December 15, 2012. 11 teams will compete. As of now there will be 5 rounds (not all teams are facing each other...kinda like Lone Star Duals). Each team will have 4 duals at minimum, some teams are looking for a 5th dual, so more opportunities may pop up in the next week or 2 as the schedual is finalized for this competition. 21. University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith (DII) has thought about the addition of wrestling they transitioned from a juco to a DII program and have added other programs. The A.D. there is a former wrestler from Oklahoma and later went on to Oklahoma State (did not wrestle there to my knowledge). Younger guy with a real interest in hearing from people as well. Good location on the Oklahoma/Arkansas border and not far from SEK or SWMO areas. Thought I had heard that NW Oklahoma State which just got accepted into DII membership status planned on adding wrestling as well. Ath Director has had previous stops at Mo Baptist and Newberry.
  22. Did they not field a team? http://www.amuathletics.com/wrestling/news/73/598/

  25. Get a video/commercial made to show on the "jumbo tron" at the PSU games showing Penn State Wrestling highlights and the trophies. Do that for the first game when they have a packed house at least, and keep doing it. You are bound to maybe catch eyes that didn't know anything about the wrestling program.
