........so much for thinking this was in reference to the National Championship DIII match at 157 and the Championship match in DII at 165.

Ok,  I am going for the out of the Burgh itself and into the suburbs for some treats with 3 destinations:

Oakmont Bakery (this place is easy to drop $40 on pastries):  https://oakmontbakery.com/
Blawnox (Starlite Lounge)  This place has been on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  PIEROGIES are MASSIVE!  Great atmosphere and probably for you all that like a drink,  a great place to hit up and kick back (btw...very little to no signage...drove by like 4 times finding it with my dad):  http://starliteloungepgh.com/  Moodogs Music Bar is right there too....here is a link to bands playing DI weekend:  http://moondogs.us/events/2019-03-22/
Russelton, PA (Deer Creek Diner)-  TRUST A BIG GUY ON THIS....go out of your way and hit up Breakfast early here...you will not need to eat another meal for a long....long time, and a good chance you will have leftovers (especially if you get the pancakes which they flip using an old steam shovel...I did a non timed food challenge there,  and made it through half dozen eggs, 3 sausage, 3 bacon 4 slices of toast,  but only 1 of 3 pancakes...had to get 4 to go boxes...it is insane amount of food):  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Deer-Creek-Diner/161987227175645

Hell there are some solid juco guys that would All American this year.   Every once in a while you get an NAIA guy that could too.

133 Boo Dryden of Northeast Oklahoma is mean as hell, but will he go D1?  He would be a solid pickup and worth a redshirt at the DI level.  Long tall frame for the weight,   he is 35-0 on the year and only 1/3rd of his wins are against juco guys.  He has wins over Sjmolering (by fall) and Parrish of Nebraska.  Also wins over the #2 NJCAA wrestler by major, and pins over 4 different NAIA and NJCAA All Americans.

I am fading fast (just got in about 40 minutes ago from announcing a match, but I do like Baterdene Boldma at 141,  but he is ranked #2, so I may have to research some more.

I wouldn't knock NAIA too much.   Freaking a lot of DI teams would get a scare or whooped if they had to take on NAIA champs Grandview.

How about Taylor Venz? Bo's just wild enough I could see him pinning himself against a guy like Venz.

I got Venz pre-season chalked in as a finalist.

Dan Hodge was the first person to come up to me after my first college match.  He talked to me for about 10 minutes and I was grateful.   His grandson's were teammates of mine in college and I appreciated a legend like that even saying hi to me let alone encouraging me to keep battling.  Great man,  hope he is able to relax and his family enjoy him in the latter part of his life now.

Thomas, Didn't lose to  backups at the scuffle he lost to Boykin (who beat Nevills the next round) and Previous NCAA Qualifier Goodhart. If you remember the HWt division was loaded at the scuffle last year. (Nevill, Kasper, Boykin, Haines, Wood, Butler to name a few) I think I remember 11 of the top 20 wrestlers at HWT were there.

So I know 5 of 8 All-Americans graduated....3 returning I believe are all Big 10 guys. The Iowa guy has a shot (in the knee...couldn't resist), but ultimately I believe Gable Stevenson will be in the thick of things real quick (at worse I think he is 3rd...he is too athletic in my opinion). Derek White is back at OSU and just missed in the blood round, and has a former NJCAA champion battling with him for the starting spot in Blake Andrews....speaking of Andrews, his little brother makes this group below:

Just looking at some transfers for the upcoming year at DI, I think it could be interesting to follow these 6 big men:

DI Heavyweight transfers to watch in 2018-19:
Brian Andrews (NEO A&M; NJCAA) to Wyoming NJCAA 3rd

Odgerel Batkhishig (Northwest Kansas Tech; NJCAA) to Campbell NJCAA Champ

Christian Colluci (Lehigh; D1) to Rutgers

Christian Lance (Fort Hays; DII) to Nebraska This guy is a journeyman....he wrestled 7 opens in 4 weeks during redshirt year placing in all 7. Kid is tough as nails. Would have potentially been a finalist or champion in DII this year, but had a bad injury half way through season. He will get way better in the Husker room with a few bodies in there to push him.

Billy Miller (Edinboro; DI) to Virginia Tech

Demetrius Thomas (Williams Baptist; NAIA) to Pittsburgh NAIA 2x finalist (2017 Champ)

I will get some good sleep and probably have some thoughts to you by tomorrow evening.   So...Ogdi has beat Andrews and lost to him I believe, and also has lost to Lance.  Colluci has a loss in his career to the back-up hwt at UNL who now may become the 3rd stringer.  Thomas wrestled at the Southern Scuffle (might be the first non-DI guy to do that)  and he lost to some backups.  He has a high ceiling, but we have seen NAIA guys try to make the jump and it isn't the same.  He will qualify I am sure, and probably be a round of 12  guy this year.   Andrews vs Miller could happen as they are Big12, and that would be a fun match-up, but I have seen Andrews in person...he's a beast.    Colluci and Lance may face each other in Big 10 action,  it will be interesting to see Lance is coming off an injury, but better partners in the room with him should help him if he is healthy.  When you hit the state of Pennsylvania and start heading Northeast through the rest of the US,  people for the most part have no clue what NAIA is (I had several athletes ask if it was DIII)....I think getting back to Thomas,  he will catch some people off guard early,  but it will be interesting to see how he does as people figure out his style.   I know Pitt faced Campbell last year,  and if that happens again this year, you will have two very different styles clashing with 2 former National Champs.  Lot of variables.  I do think Thomas is the 4th/5th best in this group though.

Agree.  It is an exciting hire for many in neighboring states too.  Lot of folks in Kansas know and love Neil.  Kid is humble and busts his ass.  He has left a great impression everywhere he has been with his work ethic and likability.  Plenty of people in the Ark, Mo, Ok, KS belt will be more than willing to help him nab up bodies as well as studs in moving ahead.  He will be fine.

Problem is there is a contingent of the fanbase of wrestling that doesn’t care about watching anything other than “the best.”

It’s frustrating as someone who tries to promote all levels of wrestling. Every wrestling team has a story and a rationale to stay alive. We can’t force people who are fans of (Insert D1 school here) to celebrate how great the wrestling competition is within other wrestling divisions. I get that. What it doesn’t mean is we should be dismissive of teams we don’t take the time to get to know.

I’ve had conversations with some great wrestling fans who believe Tervel Dlagnev wrestled at Nebraska (Lincoln) and “most” NAIA champs are D1 transfers.
