    Question for PSU Fans

I would think coaches want to help Jimmy get over the hump and excel like he did in HS. Clearly bottom has been a big challenge for him, but he shows signs of the dominance he had in HS at times. If I recall correctly, Jimmy G beat Jordan C in wrestle offs. I do not recall Jordan competing at 133 in duals, just some tourneys. I could be wrong. I have missed more duals than normal due to out of town weekend camps and pac 12 travel. Jordan's size is that of a 125 though he has clearly built into a top 20 or likely better 133 pounder, yet can still make the cut to 125 as he did in MI. Will be interesting to see how things shake out next season with 4+ very good wrestlers at 125-141. Not common to redshirt an established stud like Mega or Zain.

    Is 141 the softest weight?

The top 3 are extremely good, hence winning consistently. Any of the top 3 could potentially win 149, especially if they made time to bulk up to 149. Steiber, Port, and Retherford have trained nearly year round for over a decade. Their dominance is no coincidence. They are very good in all 3 positions. Zain and Mitchell have had some close matches but they are so good on top and bottom that they have consistently won them. Steiber is amazing on top with his ability to turn over elite wrestlers repetitively. Our sport needs more Steibers and David Taylors on top. Too much riding and stalling at college level. Perhaps dominance of David and Logan will change this over time. Though coaches, officials and rules committee hold key to changing this. That is a whole 'nother topic of course. Congratulations to Zain, Mitchell, and Logan on their impressive seasons to date.

College wrestling on TV 13-14 edition

Coach Bevilacqua has created the National Wrestling Registry. This is a wrestling mailing list to inform fans when wrestling will be on TV. With so many channels, this should prove to be very helpful to our wrestling community and help us grow our fan base with goal to get more wrestling on TV in the years to come. If we can quantify the size of our wrestling fan base, we can get more sponsors and advertisers to invest in wrestling and ideally get more matches on TV. You can register at nr4w.com.

    Taylor Massa's arm lever ?

You're welcome. Small world with your Michigan State connection to Coach Blubaugh. I learned a lot from him at his camps annually as a kid. Some key teaching points he and now I emphasize include get forward, hook forward, and block the head. You have to do all 3 of these things effectively to turn a good opponent. So much easier to share in person or on video, then in writing. As noted above, two hands on on arm. Use leg to lift, though you also need to pinch and scoop the head with knees, so there are a couple different options hear. Speaking of options, cross face reverse half finish is often safer then snake/cement finish. This moves is still definitely effective. The main reason we see it less nowadays is because tilts did not get popular until the 80s and 90s. Tilts are generally an easier way to score back points when two wrestlers are of similar strength and skill. Plus, there are so many different tilts to teach, that coaches spend less time teaching this basic near wrist bar/ thread the needle / head scoop/Gable. Fact that it has so many names must mean it works, right?! How about the bundle arms/barbed wire/corkscrew?! That moves has withstood the test of time too. Yet so few wrestlers use it. I have seen Taylor Walsh using it effectively against some tough competition. Anyone who runs a cross face cradle needs to also perfect this move as well as cross face to shoelace lift turk.

    Taylor Massa's arm lever ?

Near Wrist thread the needle head scoop. It is a fundamental move that has withstood the test of time. I learned it from Olympic Champion Doug Bluabaugh annually at his camp growing up. As poster above mentions, Dan Gable used it as have many Hawks such as Alger, Ironside, Brands and more recently Metcalf. John Smith used it. Most Okie State guys focus more on Hammer lock tilt these days, while Iowa guys are not as dominant with near wrist series as in eras past. Gable may tell you he learned it from Coach Blubaugh as I know Gable did work with Blubaugh. I recall Tyrell Todd from MI was very good at this move. He called it the head scoop. I think it is hard to get on opponent of similar skill and strength who is fighting hard on bottom. It works best when you wear down opponent first, though that could be said about many moves. Sergei Belaglozov also had this move in his bag of tricks when he decided it was time to show mercy and pin his victims after torturing them for the first 5 minutes.
  15. Set your DVR and tune in Sunday March 2 at 8pm EST. Broadcast will be live from Palo Alto, and California wrestlers, coaches, and fans are encouraged to pack the gym. This is one week prior to most conference championships and there is no HS wrestling on Sundays, so this should be great timing for hundreds of thousands of viewers nationwide.
