Snyder & Cox could be the 4th & 5th, there have only been 3 so far:

Dan Hodge - Silver at 1956 Olympics and 1957 NCAA champion.
Barry Davis - Silver at 1984 Olympics and 1985 NCAA champion.
Chris Taylor - Bronze at 1972 Olympics and 1973 NCAA champion.

    - Construction plans that drastically reduce facilities for several sports - swim/dive, tennis, fencing
    - The college doesn't offer athletic scholarships for a few of them
    -Denied media access to coaches
    - Reprimanded Tom Groden, who has been their only swim/dive head coach & the winningest swim/dive coach in NCAA history, for voicing his concerns about the construction plans

Wrestling has lost many athletes that did not have their talent realized. It's almost always due to the athlete themselves. You can't make them want it...

    Anything can happen.

As for Frank being an average wrestler. Geez do you even know what average means? Average means run of the mill. Amongst the commoners. If Frank is common that must mean all the guys he's beaten including Stieber, Metcalf, and Pico must all be below average.

Four-time NCAA all American, Pan Am gold medalist, winner of the Grand Prix of Spain and the Dave Schultz Memorial (over two guys who will be in the field in Rio, btw), first place at the US Olympic Trials. I wish I was average like that.

If you mean "average" in the universe of the 19 guys who will be competing at 65 kg in Rio, I'll grant you that. But no reason an "average" guy can't win a medal with a good draw and a few upsets. That's not how I'd bet, but that's what I'll be rooting for.

OBJoeB got a reaction from Jaroslav Hasek in NCAA switch to Freestyle, NFHS to follow
This switch would probably kill off US greco.  If schools implement freestyle there will be even less incentive to go outside the schools for greco.  I don't think both could be implemented, at least at the college level because of title IX, two styles is going to end up with more than 10 combined weight divisions so more athletes will be needed to field teams, more scholarships needed unless the same 9.9 is going to be used to field two teams (that is if even schools will offer more than they do now).

I don't get why high amplitude throws at the high school level would be so dangerous, the athletes can already be exposed to them in weekend freestyle & greco tournaments and there aren't piles of bodies at the end of tournaments.  People are acting like its going to be Zangief out there suplexing.

Can say the same about fs & gr, witnessed it this weekend.

Headgear isn't going away in folkstyle, at least for scholastic sponsored teams, it is viewed as protective/preventive equipment, can you convince them headgear is not?

Yes, people buy NFL & NHL jerseys, shirts, jackets & hats.  That has been happening for decades, jersey replicas aside they aren't buying the actual competition uniform (well, sane people aren't walking around in shoulder pads and football knickers).

Are you for a switch to underarmour style shirts & shorts (NCAA teams can do this already)?   I have no problem in changing up the uniform; UWW was supposedly coming out with new, exciting uniforms but all they did was modify the cut a little and color scheme - pretty much nothing changed.

I don't understand all the vitriol on this thread.

I went back and watched almost all of the matches from the OTTs at 65kg and I am not sure why people are so confident that Pico is the best bet for Team USA. He could have easily lost either of his first two matches and he did lose two matches in the finals. Not only did Molinaro win the event by beating Pico twice but he also beat two of the favorites going into the event.

There is no doubt in my mind that you don't come back against athletes at the Olympics when you give up points early and that was something Pico consistently did in the tournament.

Molinaro is so much better than he was a year ago. There is no reason for me to think he wouldn't be the rep. Sure, if the bracket was re-wrestled we could have five or six different guys win it but that doesn't mean any of the guys aren't deserving. Molinaro showed up when it mattered.

Seems logical, right?  There are NO sure bets at the weight for the US, and Metcalf has CLEARLY been the guy for a while now, and never sniffed a medal.  Now all of a sudden the world is ending because Frank won?  What a joke.

And at the beach people are more at ease with exposed bodies, hence the women pushing the heavyweight limit yet still confident enough to wear a two piece.  I vote on a weight limit that keeps them out of greco gilligan's photo.

The viewer number for the Saturday broadcast of the Olympic Trials on NBCSN (168,000) is well below the #D1wrestle finals on ESPN (655,000). Not sure what if any conclusions to draw from this, but it is clear that Olympic trails failed to draw many of the "hardcore" NCAA wrestling fans. Can't assume that making wrestling more "exciting" with freestyle rules automatically generates gobs of new fans.

OBJoeB reacted to Don Mog in John Smith said we need to change folk rules
Grecos' problem is that very few throws happen at high level. And for a casual viewer this makes the sport boring. I competed mainly in greco, and even I know that most moves are gut wrenches. Greco just isn't as exciting to view as freestyle.

UWW bringing back the possibility of slips has helped to sport a bit, but then again, the slips should not have been taken away in the first place.

The stupidity of greco is that the ONE move that no casual viewer undertands (gut wrenches) is the most likely move to happen on the mat.

Then there's the new rule that greco wrestlers have to defend on the mat with muscle power only. Why? No movement, no opening grips. Ok, more gut wrenches! Great!! More broken shoulders! More boring moves! Yay! \o/

The sport really doesn't show itself very well in tournaments. It seems that greco wrestlers know three moves: a gut wrench, a suplae and possibly a karelin lift. That's it.

UWW should take a good look at greco rules and think outside the box. Allow more moves, minimalize points for basic gut wrenches etc... Something.
