The truth is, the DI wrestling lifestyle is NOT for everyone. A lot of the guys listed here had the ability to be highly successful in DI if it were solely about wrestling. But, the time you have to dedicate to school and wrestling, while basically being on your own for the 1st Time in your entire life is DAUNTING.

Like Gable said, you only have the time to be successful at 2 of these three things: school, wrestling and partying. Pick 2.

The truth is, you BARELY have the time for school and wrestling. You have to be so regimented and dedicated, it can get debilitating very fast. A few bad practices or a couple subpar test scores can quickly throw you into a downward spiral.

Now, I do like this topic still, because, without a real pro Avenue, DI wrestling essentially is the pro level for folkstyle wrestling. As such, it is much like seeing a top draft pick not live up to expectations when you see top recruits not doing it. I just don’t see it in any negative light for the wrestler recruits as they aren’t moving into a position for millions of dollars while their sole focus can be on their craft. They instead are bombarded with a slew of basically never ending tasks for usually less than what it costs to achieve them!

Yes, I did actually.  And I can directly relate to his plight.  I am the resident "spellchecker" in my office.  Have been for 20+ years.  However, with age, I have started to doubt myself from time to time and am not as quick to give answers once in a while.  I am almost always still correct, but that edge of doubt has started to creep in and there are times I want to verify my answer before giving it.
If you watched Koll, that is basically what he did.  He doubted himself, went to look up the answer and when it was given he chastised himself for not being confident enough to give that answer.  I know EVERY anonymous poster on the Internet knows everything about everything, but his not immediately answering a 49er questions is far from cringeworthy to me.  Now, if he didn't know something about DI wrestling, THAT would be cringeworthy to me......

Greco translates to being an offensive lineman more than freestyle does, coon is also 6’5 and incredibly smart, I’d say the guy has as good a chance as anyone to make a living as a tackle ....coon is literally a world silver medalist, idk how anyone can really be far far better a wrestler than him, you want to say Neal would beat coon head to head or that Neal had a better career bc he got gold when coon took home a bunch of silvers I’d agree , but this thought that coon isn’t a world class wrestler and athlete is ridiculous

Current trends?  I would say you mean "older" trends.  Moore got out quite easily on bottom. Sasso gets out exceptionally well.  Both Smith and Romero did quite well on bottom in pretty deep weight classes.  Hell, even D'Emilio was pretty solid on bottom.  Even Heinselman improved immensely on bottom(admittedly he still has a ways to go).
A couple of Jordans ended up earning an entire team a bad rap they really didn't/don't deserve.   Other than guys just being severely outmatched in talent, the current roster hasn't shown bottom as a glaring weakness.

    2020:  COVID
2019:  Pletcher, McKenna, Jordan, Campbell, Martin, Moore

No doubt.  I was super impressed with how he controlled Gomez that year and Gomez was the defending champ.  Hell, he wrestled a phenomenal match against Ness and just didn't back down at the end.  I love that he wasn't wired that way, just sad that it cost him at the end.

You hear so many complain about stalling, but it actually sucked for Dennis that he simply didn’t know how to do it. Hell, even Metcalf would go to his low crouch and hanging hands in short time.

Up 2 inside 15 seconds with no stall warnings, you should be seeing how many times you can complete a circle around the very outside perimeter of the mat.  Especially against a guy like Ness in the NCAA Finals!

To me, this sounds like all the "fans" that say teams should be top 5.  I mean there are ONLY 5 teams that can ACTUALLY be top 5.  But, fans end up naming 10-12 teams.  A top 10 state is still ENOUGH of a nucleus to compete for team trophies if you can keep the best instate talent, year in and year out.
Missouri is much like Michigan for that matter.  Keep the top instate guys at home, plus land a top 10 National recruit every year or 2 and you can compete for top 5.  Michigan and Missouri have done it and the results speak for themselves.
Rutgers is more like Illinois.  The Illini haven't been able to lock down the state and that is why many are so down on them, but hopeful Poeta can get them there.  Rutgers has never held down all its local talent, nor has it been a national recruiting powerhouse.  I don't know that it ever can be, either.
With that said, ALL FOUR teams won't truly ever be competing with PSU or Iowa without more National talent.  But, I don't see who should rightly expect that.
As far as tOSU goes, the latest local crop doesn't REMOTELY compare to the ridiculous run they had with the 2 Stiebers,  2 Jordans(Bo and Micah),  Tomasello, Tessari and Moore(probably developed more than any based on where he was out of High School).  Still, even with them, they needed national monsters in Snyder, Martin and Pletcher to really even stay competitive with PSU.  tOSU will still be competing for top 5's, but they need another truly elite crop of local guys(a healthy Kharchla could help with this) or will need to recruit even more national monsters.
Finally, the way PSU recruits year in and year out is IMPOSSIBLE for ANYONE to match.  tOSU had a perfect storm for a 5 year cycle and now has to reload.  Iowa had a perfect storm of PA guys and transfers.  After next season, they will be challenged mightily to not fall considerably behind again.  Covid did NOT HELP.  It made PSU and the NLWC way stronger, while everywhere else pretty much constricted, with the exception of Michigan(Cliff Keen) and ASU(Sunkist) and neither of them were competitive with PSU anyway........

10th or so out of 50 states is "bad"?  It obviously isn't PA, NJ or Ohio, but Missouri has really done quite well recently on the High School scene.  Keeping the top 3 or so home per year would pay very well with 1 top 20 or so National Recruit.  Here is the recruiting info on the starting roster:(Missouri High School recruits in Bold)
285- Elam  #31 overall flowrestling recruit of 2018
197- Elam #11 overall flowrestling recruit of 2019
    184- Kent  #11 at 170 flowrestling and #97 Intermat recruit of 2018
174- Mocco from Wisconsin and was #20 152 of 2018
165- O'Toole from Wisconsin and was the #2 overall flowresting recruit 2020
157- Jacques #51 overall Intermat recruit of 2018
149-  Mauller #45 overall flowrestling recruit of 2018
141- Hart from Ohio and #84 overall flowrestling recruit of 2017
133- Schmitt #98 recruit(went to WVU before transferring to Mizz) overall flowrestling recruit of 2016
    125-Surtin #15 at 120 Intermat recruit of 2019

The 2 Elams and O'Toole were PREMIUM recruits.  Mauller and Jacques were right at the edge of top 50.  Mocco and Surtin were the only 2 not in the top 100 overall.

Not keeping the in state talent has been the NUMBER 1 knock on Illinois for quite some time.  Poeta is a wildcard simply because he had one of the top 2 youth programs going in the state when he became an Asst. and the hope is that he can use that even more as a Head Coach.
As far as local talent goes-
This would have been a pretty solid team for Illinois if they kept a bunch of guys home:
125:Ragusin from Illinois wrestles for UofM  went 1-2 as the 11 seed  1pt
133:Byrd currently wrestles for Illinois(not from there). Took 5th.  13 pts
141:Duncan currently wrestles for Illinois and is from Illinois. Took 5th.  11 pts
149:O'Connor wrestles for UNC and is from Illinois.  Took 1st.  21 pts
157:Lewan wrestles for UofM and is from Illinois.  Went 2-2 with his losses being to Carr and Teemer.  1.5 points
165:Ferrante wrestles for Northwestern and is from Illinois.  Actually beat Braunagel at NCAA's, who is also from Illinois and wrestles for Illinois.  .5 points
174: Austin Assad wrestles at Iowa and was injured this season.  Is from Illinois.  Went 184 but probably could have fit into 174 if not for Kemerer.
184:  Braunagel from Illinois and wrestles for Illinois.  Went 1-2.  .5 points
197:  Warner wrestles for Iowa and is from Illinois.  Took 4th.  12.5 points
285:  Cassioppi wrestles for Iowa and is from Illinois.  Took 3rd.  16.5 points
That is 77.5 total points(Good enough for 4th place) Without the possible Assad points assuming he wouldn't be injured if at Illinois and was effectively able to make 174.

LOL, I usually like your schtick, but you are dead wrong here.  Illinois has been on the rise BIG TIME over the past 10 years or so in producing top DI talent.  Their focus on traveling in freestyle and greco outside of the High School season has paid HUGE dividends.  If Illinois consistently kept the top 3 or 4 guys every year, they would be in the top 3rd of the B1G year in and year out.  That says a TON since you have PSU, Iowa, tOSU, Michigan and even Nebraska to contend with!
