  1. I am curious - if anyone knows, did he turn down D-1 Scholarship offers or was it pre-determined he would go D-2?
  2. I am missing something here. When I download the entry form all I see is a list of the top 16 seeded guys at 125 along with 4 unseeded guys at other weights. Is that the whole tourney?
  3. Did McDonnough win as a Freshman? He did not slide until his senior year, right?
  4. OK - who has the best chance - in terms of % of being a 4 timer - from the following list: t Tomasello - I say 33% 2 Nolf - I say 15% 3 Nickal - I say less than 10% 4 Mark Hall - I say 25% I did indeed pull these numbers out of my butt - but hey - who can argue with math?
  5. I would be very surprised if Abidin makes it to the Big 10 finals at 141 - I am no expert but I would think it will be seeded as follows: 1 Micah Jordan 2 Thorn 3 Ashenault 4 Abidin I would submit that the Semi-match up of AA and Thorn will determine who goes up against Micah - and I think it will be Freshman v. Freshman - Thorn against Micah in the finals. Now - having said that - I have no earthy idea who wins between those two but it sure should be fun to watch!
  6. In my humble opinion - the Big 10 wrestling programs break down like this: Top Tier: Iowa, PSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Minnesota On the rise/holding their own: Rutgers, Illinois, Wisconsin Hurtin' for Certain: MSU, NW, IU, Purdue, MD
  7. I think some of these lower-tier Big 10 schools (IU, Purdue and MSU come to mind) need to go big - or go home - and by that I mean Jordan Burroughs, Metcalf, or Varner. Or else the new young coaching stars like J Jaggers, Damion Hahn, Donny Pritzlaff or Mark Perry. Its a new day and its their time!
  8. Has Coon wrestled Stoll? I think it is pretty clear Coon & Snyder - or Snyder & Coon are #1 & #2 in the Big 10 - after those two it seems to drop off some with Stoll, Kroells, and possibly Nevill. This is not quite like a few years back when the top 5/6 Heavyweights were all Big 10 guys. With Walz beating Coon the NCAA seeding will be interesting.
  9. I think Tomasello is the best of the bunch at 125 and it seems strange to me that he gets so little respect. Having said that - it is a very tough weight class and I am not sure anyone will end up undefeated by the time the NCAA's are done.
  10. I did not see the dual but I wish I knew what was wrong with Murphy - he has not shown much this year - is it that early season injury?
  11. How did Michigan State end up with -.5 team points?
  12. Here is my Jimmy Carr story - for what its worth. Growing up in Rochester NY in the late 1960's we used to wrestle at an open tourney at Ontario Beach Park every summer. They actually put the mats on the sand so not only did you get the hot mat affect, but the grinding sand in your face affect as well. I have a very good friend named Mark who annually got beat - badly I might add - by Jimmy Carr who lived in Erie PA growing up - and we always knew when Jimmy Carr was coming to town to wrestle - he was amazing - but then we didnt hear anything from him until he made the 1972 Olympic Team (at 114.5?) Since then Mark has been able to brag about how he regularly got beat by Jimmy Carr as a 14-15 year old.
  13. I have submitted my entries and I wanted to know if I can pay via Paypal or are you only taking checks? If Paypal is OK - can I have an e-mail address to send that to for my 3 entries? JC
  14. Here are my brackets - 125 Delgado beats Nico M 133 Logan S beats Ramos 141 Maple beats Hunter S 149 Oliver beats Ness 157 St John beats Welch 165 Dake beats Taylor 174 Heflin beats Storley (upset special) 184 Ruth beats Bennett 197 Kilgore beats Quentin W 285 Nelson beats Hanke I agree with the post about Kilgore - if I had to rank the most likely to win I would put my top 3 as Kilgore Ruth Logan Stieber I thought Ramos had a shot but he had no offense whatsoever against Stieber in Champaign and I dont see that changing in Des Moines. Should be fun!
  15. I am a Gopher Phan and have no love for Iowa but I gotta say I think the coaching job Brands has done at Iowa the last two years has been more impressive than any previous championship year he had at Iowa. Iowa on paper was not great last year and not much better this year - although they did improve. There were serious holes in that line up and they still beat PSU, and Minny as well as coming very close to winning the B1G tourney. Not sure this excuses the behavior - but as far as coaching goes - he has done quite a job IMO. JC
  16. I predict the Trojans over the Greeks (oops, forgot about that damn horse!)
  17. What does that mean? Is there going to be a Cauliflower Classic Pool or not? I am confused . . .
  18. I am a Gopher fan all the way but I gotta go with Ed Ruth - I think there is a good case to be made that the way he manhandled the 174 field last year should have gotten him the Hodge Award as well as MVP - and I think he will dominate for the next two years as well.
  19. I respectfully disagree. For the same reasons Zach Sanders could have wrestled McD and 50 times and lost 50 times to him, I just do not think Ramos will ever beat Steiber. Now, McDonnough v. Steiber - that would be FUN! I think Steiber would have trouble with McD and his length, similar to the trouble he had with Oliver in the early match when Oliver pretty much had his way with Steiber. Again - that is my opinion for what its worth.
  20. I get the undercurrent that suggests, even hints at the fact that Andrew Howe will be at 174 - my question is whether or not his injury in the Olympic Trials is going to be a problem for him - I thought I heard or read something about the possibility that he might need to redshirt this year for knee surgery? Any insight into that?
  21. Dr Robert Huizenga - is somewhat of a "doctor to the stars" in Hollywood having been the team physician for the Oakland Raiders, as well as testifying at the OJ trial. He has was some kind of technical advisor to one of those reality TV shows - "Biggest Loser", maybe? He was an AA at 177 from Michigan in the early 1970's and a proponent of the Wade Shalles funk style in HS in upstate NY. He definitely marched to a different drummer but was a heck of a wrestler.
