  1. Expecting someone to be a world team member based on HS results is not a wise move. I don't think Pat Smith, with 4X NCAA titles, ever made a world team. not sure if Alan Fried did either
  2. This guy tells JB to stay out of politics, while getting political
  3. Do I understand this right then, that you set the time and place and you get dinged only if you are not there for the time place you chose?
  4. Not sure the people who donated to the stanford would be ok with that. And every school that really wants wrestling all ready has a program.. and most of them dont "really want" wrestling
  5. I think the biggest danger to D1 wrestling will be administrators questioning what the point of spending lots of money on any "minor" sports. What are they really adding to the student body as a whole?
  6. This guy always makes fantastic highlight clips. Needless to say the wrestlers are fantastic.
  7. Seems like a really bad idea for JB to take on a full sized DT. They were close to even years ago at the same weight. Now DT wrestles at a 25lb heavier weight. Hard to see a JB win, an injury seems much more likely. Maybe he is retiring and looking for a final payday? I would hate to see our greatest wrestler tarnish his legacy, but if he earns enough money I wont criticize
  8. There are also more than a handful "Russian" wrestlers who have won for non-ex-Soviet countries as well. Batirov for Bahrain and Shahin for Turkey come to mind
  9. I am pretty sure he placed at Senior Nationals while in HS.
  10. Just to add a little. Morris was an D1 AA at Syracuse and Pedro was an EIWA champ at Brown
  11. Mocco placed at judo nationals while in high school. His sister, Katie, was also a national judo champ and I think was and olympian as well
  12. Your point about it being global risk adds another level of complexity, but I would think they could pull off something like the NBA or UFC has done. I believe those have been successes. More spread out events with less support staff. Anyways, sorry about you wishing to see Dake win gold as it is clearly going to be JB getting one more,
  13. Still curious if Suriano has any close family ties to italy and if italy would allow a "foreign" athlete to represent their country
  14. He is an Italian citizen from Cuba. I don't know, but strongly doubt he has dual citizenship. I agree that Micic and Amine are American and I am happy to see that they can compete internationally and I root for them as much as if they were wearing a team USA singlet
  15. Not sure what this means but to clarify my comment. I am not going to any Olympics any time soon, because of time and money. It is a life long dream of mine to attend an Olympic games, maybe one day I will make it, but in the meantime I will watch it on TV, hopefully next year
  16. I would rather have the Olympics on tv without any fans, than wait a year. No chance am going to be there in person either way.
  17. He is Italian now, considering he has citizenship. However, you feel about athletes competing for other countries, he does not fit any of stereotypes. He did get "pseudo" citizenship just to compete because he could not make the Cuban national team
  18. Does he has recent ancestry from Italy or just an Italian sounding last name? I know that a lot smaller countries without any real presence in the a sport (Lebanon, San Marino, etc.) will allow someone to represent them at the worlds without strong ancestral ties. Is this true of Italy as well, that does not have a strong wrestling tradition, but certainly is world class in other Olympic sports?
  19. Maybe the #1 rated cable news show, but not even close to the #1 show on TV
  20. Pretty sure Neal was never All-Pro, so you need to add Carlton Haselrig with 6X NCAA championships plus Pro-Bowl and All Pro selection
  21. Actually wrestled a year at Pitt, too and worked out with Hawkeye wrestling club when he was at the Iowa writer's conference. I recommend his book, Imaginary Girlfriend, which is his autobiographical account recounting his wrestling and becoming a writer
  22. Schools that trainedf teachers were called "Normal Schools" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_school
  23. In a folkstyle wrestling match, yes, in an MMA maybe not. GSP was often cited as a world class wrestler by MMA fan boys because of his ability to take down wrestlers in the cage
  24. That is pretty much what I looked like in my late thirties, except I am white, and was a little over weight and did not much muscle definition, but I did have a receding hairline, so if you put me in a USA singlet next to him we would have been mistaken for twins
  25. One of the secrets of fundraising is that to get a big donor it is immensely helpful to have many small donors. People with money are much more likely to give big dollars to something that they see as being widely supported
