  1. The number of world/oly medalist in a weight class is a questionable measure of toughness of a weight class. They give out the same number of medals every year (with the exception of Covid years). Lots of medals especially golds, just shows there has been parity for many years, and lots of veterans with previous accomplishments who have not retired. Who is better JB or Bruce B. on the way to their first Gold or either wrestler at the end of their career with a massive haul of medals?
  2. Almost all of the "Russians" wrestling for other countries are not ethnic Russians and in general tend to be resentful of Russians. I suspect it is really easy for a Dagestani, Chechen or Ossetian fan to root for their wrestler even if they are not wearing a Russian singlet
  3. It seems like for a lot of the hand to hand turns, the back is not exposed. I am favoring of bring back the one point for hand to hand turn, but it adds another level of complexity to the rules. Right now any turn is 2 points and that is as simple as possible. Also IIRC there were borderline situations were sometimes it was hard to tell if an elbow hit making it a two point turn
  4. Slay beating Satiev in OT comes to mind, but it wasn't a final
  5. Judo now has mixed gender team event. They eliminate the separate men's and women's events to have a one m mixed. I don't know alot about the details but they combine classes and there can be gold medalists from two different weight classes competing. It is a cool way to end a tournament. It could work for wrestling
  6. I see this quoted all the time, but never with numbers to back it up. Although it is usually state as the most popular style in the world and the proof is that more countries participate in the Greco worlds versus the FS worlds
  7. Pretty sure Durlacher was an American citizen but was Jewish. The Maccabiah games are the worldwide Jewish games open to all Jews with any citizenship.
  8. In the interview on I saw on theNBC Olympic channel, I heard him thank Mongolia and his "ex-country" Iran, and after he blew kisses and then walked off (I am assuming to avoid controversy or tough questions). The audio in frequently low quality during the interviews and his accent wasn't terrible but still mad eit a little hard me me to understand
  9. Lindsey Durlacher, NCAA 2nd place, World Bronze in Greco
  10. Atlant Olympics took place in the middle of the summer, certainly a lot of heat and humidity in Georgia. I remember there being stories about African athletes that had more trouble with the indoor AC being blasted than the outdoor heat
  11. I say Japan, the host country almost always has an execptional year, usually setting records for the amount of medals across all events, Korea had 9 medals and two golds in 1988 (FS and GR)
  12. Most of us are more familiar with NCAA rankings. Looks like Campbell is the US MNT of NCAA wrestling? Or maybe the Macedonia of international wrestling?
  13. I only follow soccer a little bit so I somewhat aware where the US ranks, but I appreciate the details. I guess for comparison is a DI wrestling school that is inside the top 15 a few times a decade considered good?
  14. Is the US now consider a "good" team in soccer?
  15. They are DI in hockey. Are they non-scholarship?
  16. Years ago Kole Conard and Tommy Rowlands were signed by the Jets and did a training camp. Neither even made the practice squad if I remember, probably the likely results for Coon. https://www.bashawrestling.com/teams/default.asp?u=BASHABEARWRESTLING&s=htosports&p=NewsStory&newsID=6495 I did find this part amusing: The workouts, Konrad said, "weren't that big of a deal." He was a standout among linemen in conditioning drills, and while many other players were sucking wind, Konrad was wondering when the real work would start. After running the fastest 40-yard dash among the offensive linemen -- though Konrad didn't want to brag and declined to say how fast -- Jets assistant coach Bryan Cox told him to "chill out," Konrad said, because he was going to have to run 20 of them. Konrad shrugged his shoulders. "They give you plenty of time between them," he said.
  17. Yeah .. no reason for Penn State to mandate vaccines
  18. Bekzod doesn't count like the same asgreat Japanese wrestling for OSU and others in the sixties don't count as Americans
  19. Noel Logan won NCAA title for Clemson and then a bronze for Great Britain in 1984. He was certainly helped by the Soviet bloc boycott Not sure of his citizenship, seems to have been born in London but not sure where he grew up and learned to wrestle
  20. While still not at the same level as Taha or Geno, Gwiz is world class and has the medals to prove it. Gable made him look like a JV wannabe
  21. That is rough. 74kg - 125kg should all be expected to get at lest Bronze. Dake and Taylor should be at 50/50 for Gold
  22. Wrong answers on the Gyro, but only the top two qualifying is asiniine. Either only one qualifies or top three or have a true second where the loser of the finals wrestles the repecharge winner
  23. Happens all the time in Folkstyle.
