    Rob Koll

Not even 24 hrs from the conclusion of the season and I've already read two maybe three threads that have gone political....yeesh.

    Yianni gets it done again

Eiermans unorthodox style was probably the biggest threat to Yianni. I think he wins comfortably against Mckenna.

    NCAA Championships Semifinal Comparisons

does anyone think mueller over rivera might be a real possibility....bresser is so dangerous on his feet and mueller kept him at bay....and his top game is very dangerous...maybe not to turn but riding a whole period does a lot of bottom guys psyche.
  8. and unfortunately, this is what will get the most press in our sport....even with conference/ncaa champion competition going on.

    Chance's Chances

I have a strong inclination that someone outside of the big ten wins this weight. With how close all of the top guys are, it may come down to who's body is feeling best at that moment. After a grueling big tens schedule, the recovery just may not be there. My eyes are on this weight class from beginning to end. How many more days......

    Chance's Chances

Whew, I am filling out my brackets and I just can’t get over Marinelli’s draw. More than likely smith, Mekhi, wick/marstellar. I honestly think he is probably the best wrestler at the weight but that is a tough tough road to get to the finals. I will happily eat crow but I just can’t see him navigating that. Yeesh. 11. Multiple times on FRL I have heard the guys mention the "lines" for certain matches. Are these legitimate betting lines that they are getting, or are they just 'creating them?

    Talk about turning program around

We run into the same problems as well. We call it a Flow-match. Two guys going at a slower live pace but with very little resistance not so much worrying about scoring or giving up points. We emphasize that this is the time to put yourself into uncomfortable positions and find ways of getting out of it. But yea I see the same stuff, either its one guy dominating or just two guys going live. Its helped our guys to go 1:1 with a coach who knows what he is doing and then that coach models and explains throughout. Then if that kid understands what's asked of him then he can work with another kid....kind of like a teach a teacher sort of deal.

    Talk about turning program around

Yup! Someone a few months ago posted the types of shots/takedowns that were most used successfully at the senior level and it was double, single, high crotch, and a quick go behind at the top. Another obstacle we run into is our guys will attend camps in the summer (something we definitely reinforce as coaches) and be taught some of those more "flash moves" and then come to practice and only want to work on that. What we started doing a little more before practice is putting up a quick flo video of some of the d1 teams drilling and working out. Not only do we do that as a way to model what intensity in drilling looks like, but we also ask them to take notice of the moves they see being drilled....They are baffled that you dont see Michigan or Ohio State running a "super duck drill" over and over again haha.

A well thought out opinion, man! Cheers to you! Being a coach I think you hit the nail on the head. The emphasis needs to be on the team and developing a system and culture that all can be a part of. It is a tough road though. For my team personally, we have one practice for JV/Varsity in our room (numbers issue but we are getting there!) we have guys who are returning state champs and medalists and D1 commits, as well as those who have never put a headgear on before. Tailoring a practice to make sure it is beneficial for all levels has been challenging to say the least. I think for the team culture the focus has to be on those things that don't involve specific advanced techniques. The basics of the wrestling mindset, hard work, sacrifice, being coachable overcoming adversity or obstacles, and respect. These are aspects that all young wrestlers can be a part of and understand without the need of specialized trainings or camps. Ultimately, these skills help in life outside of the wrestling room. Great post Russell! I truly enjoy your perspective.

    Talk about turning program around

What do you think a solution would be? (just making conversation) Increase youth participants? Focus more on out of state competition and the international styles...Fargo etc. Decrease divisions in high schol wrestling to saturate the talent pool? All of the above?

    Talk about turning program around

Berge moving up to fill 157 then verk slides in? That's what I would expect. Still with such a small window of competition availability. Burning a year of eligibility for a pretty blue chip recruit still stinks. Now that I've done my research (probably shouldve done that prior to my posts) I see that Verk is only a RS-Fr. For some reason I thought he was older. He still has 3 full years of eligibility left so he may not be as concerned as I was about having to sit behind berge this year.

    Talk about turning program around

Really? I didn't know they had dropped so far. If so, I retract my previous statement. Although I'd still give a multiple time state champion from iowa more of a look than say someone from a state with less pedigree.

    Talk about turning program around

Still a hotbed compared to most other regions in the united states. Sure they are no Pennsylvania, Ohio, or NJ but I would bet Iowa would still be top 7-8 states to recruit from. Question though, do you think Verkleeren has regrets decommiting and heading to PSU. One could argue being on a national championship team could be enough, but riding the bench in college could not be what he was expecting? Were there any others who decommited when the coaching change happened? I remember Gomez decommited then recommited.

Flo quality for big 10 semis

Whiskey Gross Dakota Rumors are a swirling

Hope its not true because I am a huge fan of bono/reader and what they are starting to do over in Madison. But damn if this isnt some juicy info. My opinion just makes me think of the quote from Dark Knight "some people just want to watch the world burn."
