See - its when people add stuff like the above that makes them sarcastic "I wanna argue everything and show you how smart I am" posters that are disliked.

I was being coy/sarcastic because of the raging debate on this board about that topic.  I dont have a "thesis" and sorry that I forgot about her scholastic high school folkstyle wrestling......

Agreed.  Not every thread needs to come back to "Cael is a god" and all the Penn State slobbering that goes along with it.

I think "seems" is the operative word, here.  Culturally, we had some very fixed ideas for a long time about what "good, fundamental wrestling" was.  The problem is, that was always about a style of wrestling, not wrestling itself.  Wrestling rewards what works; our ideas about what works are just ideas.

When I was a lad, it was common wisdom that throws were "junk moves".  Good coaches showed good technique.  When their wrestlers got thrown and pinned, they complained about it, and continued to show good technique.  I don't miss those days.

One thing that has become more obvious today is that shooting well is hard.  Unless you're very precise, you open yourself up to a great many counterattacks (only a few of which have gained currency today).  So, were our wrestlers 30 years ago shooting so well that the counters we see today wouldn't have worked, which is why you never saw them tried?  I really doubt it, and our international results didn't suggest it.  Our shots were good enough, because everyone was defending them the same, very limited way.

If it's not aesthetically pleasing, that's probably because your tastes are tuned to another era's "good wrestling".  Art is like that.  If you're used to Bach, Miles Davis may sound like crap... but it's not because Miles couldn't figure out counterpoint.

"Kids", by the way, have been winning Olympic titles all along.  They just weren't our kids.

Elena Pirozhkova was hitting that foot sweep long before Helen was on the senior level. She would usually hit it off an over collar tie. When Elena left the OTC she moved to CA to train with Kalika. Kalika coached her for a long time, as well as Aaron Pico and eventually Helen. Everything Elena tells me about him is that he is a great coach, and I think that's pretty obvious. Personally I would love to see someone of his caliber work with more than just a couple of our best.

You're choosing to assume Penn State offered the deal.  Is it black mail if the offer came from the Suriano camp?

I've noticed that a number of US women wrestlers work a good amount of sweeps, trips and leg throws into their offense. At first I thought it was the judo crossovers like the Alo sisters, the Doi twins, Alli, Clarissa, Stephany Lee, Kristie Davis Marano, Randi Miller, Katie Downing, Ellie Keen, etc. but those types of leg attacks are quite integrated into our women's team arsenal. It's not even a WFS thing, though a number of female wrestlers from other countries do it too, its like the US women drill and develop those attacks along with their shots, snaps, ducks and so forth.

She needs a title. Maybe something along the lines of:

“Helen of the House Maroulis, the First of Her Name, The UnTech'd, Queen of the Olympics, the World Championships, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons”.

Is that the most dominant 3-year run in USA Wrestling history?  I was at Vegas, she smoked everyone but don't recall if it was all techs.  Then she beats one of the GOATs in the Olympic finals.  Comes back up two weights and is a destroyer of worlds, all techs.

How many US wrestlers can match that run?  I know she was pinned in her first post-Olympic tourney, did she have any other losses in the last three years?

Edit - changed topic name since a similar one was started.

It helps if PSU promises to support a waiver request. He still has to sit a year but doesn't lose a year of eligibility on top.
    I think I'm right about that - aren't I?

All hope lies in repechage.  Better than Rio?  Yes, some actual wins.  But not a glowing sign of improvement from our vets.  Go with the young guys--get them to as many Euro tournaments as possible in the coming year.
