Well, to be fair, 1992 wasn't a great year for Smith. He managed to bring the gold home, nonetheless.

Smith started getting his medals at a younger age. He was 27 in 92 and JB was 28 in 2016.
You can talk about JB slowing down but he still bounced back at 29 to win another gold and I still think the constant blood stoppages hurt his game in 16. You can say his double is his signature move but his constant reshots were/are just as dangerous.

Not to mention that Sergei had been retired from wrestling for more than a year (since the '88 Olympics) when the match happened. Smith had just won his fourth consecutive World gold less than eight weeks before that match took place.

I get your point on Taylor, especially after his series with Cox, but are you really going to fault Dake’s MIND for losing a best of 3 against one of the three or four Americans GOATs after wrestling through a mini-tournament?? Ridiculous argument. He had nothing left in the tank by the third match. The mind had very little to nothing to do with it. Not to mention JB is JB, so any loss to him can very easily be explained by, he’s just better.

David Taylor won the Spanish Grand Prix at two different weights. I don't think there's any doubt he pins his way through worlds and Yazdani (if he can make the team).

Bijan Seif Khani, he ended up winning the match against Israel. I believe they immediately ordered both the freestyle and greco teams back to Iran and banned him. There isn't much online on it. This was 1983 Kiev world championships.

You will not be hanged or whatever but you will be banned from wrestling for life. A Iranian Greco Roman wrestler was man enough to ignore the rule and wrestle Israel in the 80s I believe and they black listed him from the sport forever. So if you're going to do it and want to keep wrestling you'd pretty much have to defect immedietly after.

I blame the Iranian government and the Palestinian people for much of this.
