LaxHawk174 reacted to VakAttack in Is it time to start talking Nick Suriano NCAA champ?
Actually, they're not similar at all, since Nick Moore was an experience senior with a bunch of legitimately great D1 wins, like Tyler Caldwell vs. Bo Jordan, a freshman.  But thank you very much for playing.  I understand nuance can be tough for you.

You saying you wouldn't be "freaking out" if Zain went down? The best wrestler on the team sounds like he'll be out an extended period of time, that's a significant blow to a team that has National Title hopes that hinge on the entire team being 100%.

Thanks for posting that link. I liked what Brands had to say and I really enjoyed Clark's deadpan analysis of what will happen. "We'll see. We'll see." I don't know if the words themselves can paint the picture, but the way he said them was priceless and I laughed out loud in a very positive way. Like the kid's personality!

125: Suriano should have another great early season test against a very tough and seasoned vet in Cruz. Very much a toss up. A low scoring battle is likely.

133: Cortez should have no trouble with Parker and if he does, Penn State might have some slight preliminary concerns about their point scoring potential at this weight.

141: Cruz might just ride the daylights out of Gulibon. He's looked sharp in the early season (win over Jack) while Gulibon has looked lackluster (loss by fall to an unranked App State wrestler). Lehigh by comfortable decision.

149: Gardner is a tough customer as evidenced by his recent tight battle with Micah Jordan (and his previous victory over him). Zain will definitely dominate but a fall will be tougher to come by (although given his start to the season, I wouldn't put it past him).

157: Kutler looks like a high pace wrestler but we have seen plenty of other guys who like to be active simply find themselves overwhelmed by Nolf. I think Kutler keeps it somewhat close for about a period and a half and then Nolf busts it open in the 3rd and wins big as is his MO.

165: One of the more intriguing matches of the dual along with 125 and 174. Joseph was very impressive in his recent tournament victory and controlled a very explosive Teshan Campbell in the finals with ease. His semifinal victory over Chad Walsh also helped to erase the memory of his loss to Subjeck of Stanford. Minotti (if healthy) is a stingy wrestler who finds a way to get it done in close matches. Another coin flip of a match in my opinion.

174: I imagine Rasheed might get the nod after taking down Morelli in the finals of the Keystone. I was super impressed by his gas tank after seeing him fade late so many time last year after taking the lead against quality opponents (see: McFadden of VT and Rodrigues of Illinois). I think he should take a controlled decision over Preisch, but Preisch is a tough kid so no guarantees here.

184: Bo by fall. Lock it in.

197: Cutch probably wins a very controlled match once again. It will be interesting to see if throughout the season we see any evolution in terms of his size/strength and if that corresponds to ability to put more points on the board. So far he's been looking good for an undersized guy, but PSU sure could use some more points in a weak weight class come NCAA time.

Heavyweight: Nevills has looked good so far this season after looking comparatively unimpressive in his short stint last year. He looks leaner and like he's shaken off the rust after a couple of injuries. Vollaro is a full sized heavy who's been having a nice start to his season as well with recent victories over Larson of Oklahoma and Solomon of Pitt. Could see this one going either way but I think I'll take the hot hand with Nevills after Vollaro's loss to Miller of Edinboro.

Overall, I see it 8-2 or 7-3 in favor of Penn State, plus bonus. Still a good dual and has some interesting matchups that will help to solidify our understanding of this Penn State team's firepower. Namely: Suriano, Cortez, whoever goes at 74, and Nevills.

Yes -- the guy at the weight above me, Dale Carr, is given some credit for "creating" or at least improving the "shoulder roll" (as they called it). Carr could actually execute a great Granby from his feet. Also, Keith Lowrance used it alot. I picked it up from both of them.

I talk about it quite a bit in the book probably because almost no one I wrestled had ever seen it really. The problem was that a lot of referees had never seen it either -- I think the ref in my '67 match stood there for a few seconds while Yatabe struggled on his back before he gave me even the two points for reversal.

Frankly, I was not that good with the move -- but even Billy Martin allegedly said once that if an Iowan can learn the move, anybody can, so at least he gave me credit for trying!

Coach jammen wins the title this year and next at the helm of the mighty Nittany Lions, but then finishes 4th in 3 years and off the podium after that as his lack of recruiting panache and insistence during home visits on recruits watching old Minnesota National Duals victories confuses and befuddles both recruits and their parents.
