This match, should it happen like so many think it will, reminds me of Dustin Kilgore vs. Quentin Wright. Partly for the reason you stated, and partly because Kilgore was like a block of granite and technically sound as well while Wright had a lot of different types of moves he brought to the table.

Simply put, a ref does not look for a neutral fall in nearly the same way as an offensive one.  He is taught to first look for control(to award a takedown).  Since control has not yet been established, looking solely for the fall(as he would for the offensive wrestler) does not occur.  That isn't to say they are not supposed to look.  But, it is very simple common sense that the pin would not be called in nearly a similar fashion.

I understand that Heil is very frustrating to watch.  But, just because he seems to get into these positions often, doesn't mean the standard will change.  A ref isn't going to call a neutral fall remotely as fast as a normal one and I don't think he should.  Folkstyle has always been about control.  A neutral pin should be so obvious that no one can dispute it.  Remember, this is coming from someone that absolutely wanted Evans to beat Perry.  But, I completely support the fact that it wasn't called.

I heard that as a senior in HS, Askren showed up for the state finals in a suit and tie with a briefcase that contained his headgear. The guy is definitely on a different level in both funk and comedy.

In my 15+ years of tourney attendance, I can't think of a louder NCAA crowd cheering for someone's loss (as opposed to for someone's win, if that makes sense) in a non-finals match as when Mike Zadick lost to Percival.

If he was getting turned I'd say it's cause for concern.  But even if he spends a period on bottom, that doesn't do much for opponents.  He isn't going to choose down in a match with a good top guy, so the best a guy gets is a chance to choose top himself.  That means even if you ride him out he only has to score 1 TD in 5 minutes of neutral wrestling to make it 2-2 (assuming he surrenders an escape and RT point).  So best case scenario you escape quickly after his TD, you pick top and ride him out, and you get to OT where his giant gas tank greets you for another minute on your feet.

My point is just that you need to wrestle him to a draw on his feet to beat him with riding.  Good luck with that.

I can't believe people want Bo called for the pin there. Seriously? Are you trying to discourage interesting moves?

He did beat Crutchmer, who is about as big and strong as any 74 in the country, so I dont know if we can totally say size and strength is the only problem. First match, at CHA, vs 5th year senior, who knows?

All I know is 174 just got even more interesting and I think this is going to be a wild weight come NCAA's. Jordan's health seems to be a real question, then you have a guy like Meyer who can beat anyone or lose to anyone, a guy like Hall who you can probably say the same thing about looking at his year so far, you've got returning AA's ranked as low as 14th (Kent) who can never be counted out, a rapidly improving guy like Preisch, a 5th year senior who has been in the finals and just beat Preisch in Realbuto, a stud freshment who has been consistent as hell all year in Valencia and the guy who took 3rd last year has also been steady as they come in Epperly. Throw in a funky scrambly freshmen like Lujan who could upset anyone, seniors who have been around and beaten good guys throughout their career like Brunson and Weatherspoon. Hell, throw in a guy near the bottom of the rankings like Brucki since he beat Hall, or in the middle of the pack guy like Kocer who just beat Crutchmer.

Yup, I think I just talked myself into picking 174 as my favorite and most anticipated weight for NCAA's. Not only do you have the depth I just talked about, this is one of the few weights that doesnt have one guy who is basically head and shoulders above the rest (Nolf, Retherford, Cox, Snyder). Yup, definitely my new favorite weight this year. 133 a close 2nd with that top 7.

The top man does NOT have to return him to the mat...only ATTEMPT to return him to the mat. If he is actively attempting to return him to the mat, then they can spend the entire period on their feet.

The current rule book lists the following as a point of emphasis for this iteration of the rules:

5.9.3.a If the offensive wrestler does not attempt to return the defensive wrestler to the mat, the referee shall call stalling   Dudley should have been called for stalling. The referee saw an unusual situation and made an incorrect call that gave Dudley an advantage.

Yep.  I don't mind a stalemate when neither guy is capable of improving position.  I don't like the million stalemates that get called because neither guy feels like improving.  Like how is a front headlock a stalemate?  You either try to use it and action happens, you let it go, or you are stalling with it.

Certainly appreciate the input.  Saw a replay of the match and certainly understand your post.  Had to be incredibly difficult for the ref to call.

I saw points on a Berger TD in OT on Flo that must have been reversed and think I understand the reasoning.

This post aligns with what I think a lot of us, me included, have just learned about the reaction time situation.  I was wrong before and the ref seems to have gotten every call right.  Bravo to him and thanks for the explanation.

just watched. the scramble at around 6:20? no points every time. wanna give 2 green? no way, red nearly has a crab ride with the half/underhook. wanna give 2 red? no way, green's elevating red's leg keeping red underneath. no points no matter how you look at it if you're objective.

as far as the fall goes. you'd have to be on the other side of camera angle on this vid. it's silly to speculate from this angle.

This was a very tough match to officiate and, although there were some reviews that took place, I truly believe the correct calls were made in the end. Folks have such a misunderstanding about reaction time / no reaction time. There is reaction time in every takedown situation except two: the hand touch situation from a rear-standing or merkle situation. Other than those two, there is reaction time allowed. The takedown situation in OT was called correctly after the review because the refs noticed correctly that he never controlled the far ankle beyond reaction time. It was almost continuous that his ankle slipped right out and then the scramble ensued. Very tough match, but the best ref was on this match and got the calls correct. It may not have been the smoothest first time around, but video review is a wonderful tool.
