BigTimeFan got a reaction from TBar1977 in Anything from arbitration?
Well said. I think that the way it should and does work is that coaches should be allowed to vigorously advocate for their athletes through any and all means allowed by the rules. There should be neutral adjudicators who decide which challenges, which appeals and so forth get a hearing and then neutral judges to hear the outcomes. That’s the setup. Then there has to be an overlay of yet other people who work to ensure that the parties are all sticking to the script. Coaches should not be allowed to abuse their rights to challenge and appeal. The judges must be reviewed to insure they are indeed neutral and not being influenced. And so on. The system will end up pretty good but from time to time there will be major issues.
In this case the system at matside, in my view, failed us by allowing an extremely aggressive challenge to be heard and the overturn the initial result of the match. I have no quibble with Penn State attempting their challenge. It’s simply not their job to determine the legitimacy of their own challenges. They had their rationale, no matter how much of a stretch it was. I think the decision to the reverse the outcome was extremely odd. Even so system still worked to some degree. The appeals process allowed Yianni to get a hearing and now he and Zain get to wrestle again.
Last point: one poster said the result still favored Zain because he went from losing the match (the original outcome) to having to re-wrestle the match. I agree. But this simply means that the arbitration’s conclusion was consistent with “we aren’t sure who won” as opposed to “Yianni won”. I’m not sure I agree with that.

Yep. Some are worried this will open a can of worms and we are going to see matches go to arbitration all the time. I don't think it will be an issue. The process has been in place for a long time and has been used in the past. If the Yianni/Zain match hadn't been such a cluster#%*$ (only Tbar and his buddy seem to think it wasn't a complete mess), the request for arbitration would have been thrown out immediately. As will any unreasonable requests in the future. Plus, Cael will never go to arbitration, because he is above that. And his lawyers aren't as good as Cornell's.

This event is barely being reported on in the entire world. The UWW site notes its existence but has nothing about it. Worldwide there’s been a few articles from India and one ESPN article. USA wrestling so far only reported on yesterday’s action. What’s up with that ?

As for Bo, he’s an interesting one. No question he could have made 184 this year (right?) so his winning at 197 was damn impressive. But why didn’t he go 86kg for worlds? Was it Taylor?

Pat Downey’s speech was inspiring. He did it. He made weight and won by forfeit.

Nickal has been very dominant against freestylers who aren’t terribly well know for ... freestyle. There’s no reason to believe that just because he looked so good against Macc that he will be in the same ball park as Cox. Look at it this way. Nolf looked “not ready for prime time” but then again he wrestled Imart who has been wrestling freestyle at the senior level and showing good results. He had a close one with world medalist Green. Bo hasn’t wrestled anyone of that caliber as yet. That being said, as everyone else already pointed out, Cox isn’t a prolific techer.

And even when Taylor pinned the Iranian at the World Cup it was still a question. Only thing that truly counts is the Worlds. Even Fadzaev lost a few matches to Chris Wilson in World Cup matches. Jim Scherr heat Khadartsev in a World Cup match. But lost badly in the worlds many times.

    Here we go again.
Here’s where I stand. I’m rooting for 100% USA gold. It would take a lot life than Downey’s antics to move me off that stance. Downey is at times annoying to me but we can chalk that up to taste.
Downey has a history of unsavory behavior but he’s not the only athlete, let alone wrestler, who does. JO was out for testing positive,. arguably more offensive because it’s an unfair advantage over his competition. Was anyone was rooting against JO because of it. Chance Marstellar had a couple of falling outs and some treated him as a hero in his final NCAA run. So yeah we don’t all love Downey. But he’s out rep and deserves our full throated support.

That’s not really an answer and no you wouldn’t tell a lie. However sometimes there’s some kind of inside jokey thing going on that I’m too clueless to know about. Anyhow that would really suck if Taylor were out for good or even misses this year. But at least he won a world title. Fingers crossed.

I can’t speculate because I didn’t see Gable putting such a beating on Coon. Assuming we don’t find out that’s Coon had the flu, this means he’s come a long way and anything is possible. It reminds me of Snyder.
He lost four times (?) his freshman’s year in college and took second —  great by many standards but not elite. His four losses were twice to Gadsen (once by fall in ncaa finals and the other 2-3), split with McIntosh, and split with Burak. Like Gable he didn’t win Big Tens losing to McIntosh. That was his 2015 ncaa season.
Then a few weeks (?) later he entered the US open and took out Jake Varner and then again in the world team trials. Then he wins the worlds beating Gatsalov. If one went purely on us NCAA showing and Varner’s experience (gold in 2012, not on the team in 2013 and made the team but did not medal in 2014) you could say that the situation was very much similar to what Gable faces. The kind of level jump it would take to take out Gwiz is similar.

It's a mixed bag. On the one hand, I like the fact that there are two weekends in June with some high quality matches. If you think about it, the US open is barely interesting in most cases till the semifinals (with exceptions like this years 65kg class). More than 50% of the matches (could it be more than 75%?) at the WTT challenge are really interesting. So much so that it's hard to watch them all live because so many are happening at the same time. Especially when Flo tragically shows two finals matches at the same time. By the time you get to FinalX the matches are all exciting and many of them are super competitive. As a fan I like having so much wrestling to get to the worlds. That said, it's still a mixed bag because nothings decided until the end other than who will not be going to the world and Final X will be very, very thin. Each  MFS X will have five weight classes times at least two matches. Pretty thin.
