I'm not trying to downplay those countries. i would just be shocked if there weren't more freestyle fans participants in the USA than there were greco fans and participants in sweden, norway, denmark, finland, lithuania, latvia, estonia, serbia and croatia combined. would love to find out there are large greco followings and full gyms of competitors in those countries though.

If anyone knows Esteves, contact him and let's set up a GoFund or something similar. I think that would be a good thing!

As far as I can tell, here are the senior-level freestyle tournaments he's won since moving on from NCAA wrestling in 2013:
2014 Granma Cup 2017 Grand Prix of Paris 2018 Yasar Dogu 2018 Worlds 2019 Grand Prix of Spain This is a much better freestyle resume than 99.999% of people could hope for.
But, it just happens to not be better than JB's freestyle resume. No shame there.

If the question is, are there more freestyle or Greco wrestlers at UWW events, it has to be freestyle by a healthy margin (when you count female and male freestyle wrestlers).
If the question is, which style generates more money in the free market, it seems to be freestyle. As far as I’m aware, there are three professional freestyle leagues (Germany, India, Iran) and zero professional Greco leagues.
If the question is, who has the higher viewership numbers, we can’t answer that, as far I know. I am not aware of there being reliable on stats on live and broadcast viewership.
I think that pretty much wraps up the discussion.

Great. Going by participation, men’s and women’s freestyle have far more participants than Greco does. Case closed.

so, to recap, participant numbers in age level world championships where the one wrestler per nation per weight is in effect tells us virtually nothing about the relative popularities of the styles. the USA sends the same number of participants to the world championships in all 3 styles, and yet we all know the popularity of each style in the USA is not equal.
what we want is total participation numbers, and other broad measurements, like audience size and money invested in the styles. the number of participants in tournaments with all styles but with no limit on entries per nation will get us closer to that info, and though it would be far from perfect, is interesting enough on it's own to be worth looking into.
and in my humble and potentially incorrect opinion, that world wide there is a much larger audience for freestyle than greco, and there are far more practitioners of freestyle than greco.the fact that a few dozen small nordic and eastern european countries each sends a handful of greco roman wrestlers to world championships but zero freestylers does not change that opinion.
thanks for the convo and enjoy the weekend my friends!
edit: sorry if Jon or LBJ think I was being a dick to them, it just seemed like they were getting mad and I was hoping to calm them down. sorry if i failed at that!

Are there any professional Greco leagues anywhere in the world?
My understanding is that there are professional freestyle leagues in Germany, India, and Iran.

lol it wasn't a yes or no question.
but, if I understand your question, the reason freestyle is more popular despite greco having more participants at the world championships than freestyle because it's one participant per country. the nordic and baltic countries have wrestlers in greco (though not full lineups, for the most part) in greco but none in freestyle. meanwhile there are more total freestyle participants in the USA than there are total greco participants in all of western europe, even though there is only one American freestyle participant at worlds, whereas western euorpe might have 20 greco wrestlers in any given weight class.
figured that was obvious so apologies if this was common knowledge for everyone and I just misunderstood the question.

without looking up any numbers, I'd guess there are more total freestyle wrestling fans in India than there are greco-roman fans in the world combined, and more money being spent on freestyle wrestling in the USA than there is money spent on greco-roman wrestling in the world combined. it's probably orders magnitude larger in both cases.
absolutely nothing against greco. it's got plenty to recommend and the passion greco wrestlers and their fans show is enviable. i would be very happy to see it grow in popularity and be as big or bigger than freestyle, I just don't see that being the case now.

Yes, I think you understanding the point now. Illinois and Arkansas would have the same number of Greco-Roman wrestlers at Fargo if it worked under a one state, one participant per weight system the way world championships operates under a one country one participant per weight. yet the total greco participants between illinois and arkansas are no where close to 1 to 1.
looks like we are making progress on the concept of proportionality. this is good!

It’s actually two styles, freestyle and Greco.
The freestyle gender balance is a pristine 50-50.
Meanwhile, Greco has not developed a women’s side at all.

previous to being given the opportunity to vote, there was no law against women writing names on pieces of paper in basements all by their lonesomes...
face it, women have no opportunity to compete in greco, so, using thair participation in freestyle as some numbers game justification is silly...
  19. Thanks
Katie got a reaction from leshismore in Junior Greco has a pulse...4th place after Day 1
Before the 19th amendment, women’s eligibility to vote was a matter of state law. So, quite literally, women were unable to vote because state laws prevented them from doing so.
When it comes to Greco, I am not aware of any law that prevents women from learning Greco and putting tournaments together.
So your hypothesis that Greco will suddenly become popular among women as soon as something or someone “allows” them to do so seems mistaken.
