takedownartist reacted to jmachinder in Flo's Story of Cary Kolat
Really interesting documentary.  I am curious to know what Kolat thinks of the current rules.  It seems like a lot of improvement has been made since 2000, some certainly through examining how Kolat's matches exposed flaws in the system. And at the expense of the numerous times he was ripped off.  I mean, as bad as the scoreing was Novachkov's match was this year, it was resolved then and there, while the match was still in progress.  As shocking as it was that the refs scored it that was after the review was shown on screen for all the crowd to see, it's much better than when things were decided in back rooms.

While people talk about his physicality and technique, it's pretty amazing what a great strategist Kolat was.  Him explaining his gameplan against Barzakov in 1998 was pretty fascinating and quite an inspired strategy.  I kind of some great coaching is ahead of Kolat.  And when Burnett is mentioning how much he could help USA wrestling as a coach, that's not just blowing smoke.  I really think he has an uncanny ability to pick opponents apart from watching them.

Beach wrestling has huge upside to promote the sport if marketed professionally. So far, needs some help to grow but why bash it?
I live in a beach town and if saw any match, whether wrestling, mma or whatever, I would watch.

takedownartist got a reaction from Fishhook in Folkstyle: Is it best for our athletes?
Folkstyle wrestling is great for our athletes.
The narrow focus on folkstyle wrestling for most young wrestlers and most their coaches is terrible for our athletes.

If our American first grade wrestlers...

are not being taught by youth coaches to transition from a takedown to a turn then their mindset is to just cover them, then ride and control the years go by and habits get ingrained.

are not being taught or at the least introduced by youth coaches to gut wrench and leg lace, the two highest percentages of turns, then five years later in early junior high they are already five years behind their Russian and Iranian counterparts.

are not being taught specific takedown technique specific to achieve pushouts by youth coaches, then they are clueless to current rules, then five years late after playing it safe on the edge they get mauled in freestyle.

I know it would be a hard sell but I think it would be awesome if folkstyle and freestyle were taught way more often at the same time.
Or at the very least a segment of practice dedicated to freestyle technique and tactics.

I feel bad for most our first grade wrestlers who through no fault of their own are falling behind from lack of freestyle training and freesyle coaches in most areas.

It is a shame since freestyle wrestling is the most exciting and athhletic sport in the world.

The best kids don't need to go to camps.  The point though is to get the kids out of the house, to interact with other people, spend time on a college campus (this is huge and gets their mind on the thought of going to college), and in a different training environment.

Lee Kemp legacy was effected most by boycott.
Any true fan of wrestling know he was one of the best ever despite the boycott denying him the Olympic gold,

One of those guys with an ageless style who looks like he could be extremely competitive today with no adjustment had he been born much later. Total badass.

Absolutely not a waste.   He is getting a life education condensed to just a few years.   He has been to dozens of countries, performed all over the world, has met countless winners, leaders, teachers, influences, etc.   Copare that to the kid who wins a HS state title and sees all the same people in his community and then goes off to college at the local university while living in their parents basement.   Which one is better suited for life?   It's not even close.

The connections he is making, the peers and mentors he is meeting and bonding with, the unreal experiences he's having of victory and defeat.   Resolve and determination.   You insert those qualities, with his connections, with his drive, and with his world wide, life education (not to mention the academics as well) he is a can't miss winning in life prospect.   There is virtually no comparison with a kid who goes the conventional route.   Pico is living his dream.

"The Importance of Drilling" was a good read. I had my novice age son check it out as well.  I have a slight obsession with the evolution of neutral technique in folk, free and even Greco. (Yes I am a crazy wrestling dad and former wrestler) When a wrestler on the short list of true takedown artist posts his observations and knowledge, it would be wise for wrestlers of all ages to take a moment and pay attention. Please continue blogging and we will stay tuned. Great seeing you giving back to the greatest sport known to man.

More than scouting opponents, I think Flo's biggest impact is in making technique available for everyone. I'm not just talking about the technique section of Flo. You can watch the sport evolving real-time on Flo because they do such an impressive job of covering every major (and many minor) event in every age group all the way up to the senior world level.

I am putting myself out there by dating myself but here goes anyways.
Maybe I am not alone but does anyone remember their coaches hitting up other coaches for video recording or VHS Tape (gosh I am old) of a soon to be opponent most often in the post season?
Now anyone, anywhere can cue up good ole Flo and bam....I can instantly adjust my wrestlers strategy.
For instance, my current favorite underclassman, Daton Fix.
Yes he is good. Would he catch me in an inside trip or overtie shrug or throwby if I was sure not to collar tie or inside tie while circling in or out?
    Maybe, maybe not.
All I know is that today's elite better be able to adjust way quicker than the previous generations.
Instead of what worked all year, might be what worked all tournament today.
Bless you and curse you Flo.
