Shells9 reacted to Bombermule in Memories of hero wrestlers
The first NCAA championships that I attended was in Albany, 2002. I was 15 and my father passed away 3 weeks before the championships. A family friend took me to the championships and we were sitting in the UPenn section since we were with an Alum. I think my friend had said something to Brandon Slay about what I was going through and Brandon moved seats around so I could sit next to him a couple of the sessions. He was relatively fresh of the Olympic Gold and was my hero at the time. I was so thrilled to sit next to him. After the championships he called me every couple of weeks to check in and give me some motivational talks. I had a few of the voicemails saved for years.
I told a similar type of story in another thread about Tom Ryan:

Did anyone else tear up a little bit when they did that shot of Nolf's ankle bands? Well done by the production team.

agreed. I feel like the emu coaching staff is getting even more of a raw deal because positions are opening up now but they are conflicted on whether to jump at those spots or hold out on a sliver of hope that the school changes their mind. Sucks all around.

David Bolyard built something out of nothing at EMU and produced an All-American.  Would love to see him get a shot at program with some resources.

Also a bit of class today, thought I saw Iowa's Kemerer, who had Nolf's bad knee torqued a bit when the whistle blew to stop the action, slowly unbend Nolf's knee and gently set it aside.

I did track, dance, and gymnastics growing up. Competed in track at Central Michigan University.

My dad was a wrestler through college and coached after, but I discovered my love for the sport on my own. I went to a meet my senior year of high school with a friend to watch her boyfriend. We both got really into it and declared afterwards that we would be official "Superfans". The two of us didn't miss a meet - home, away, tournament... we were there for everything in our homemade Superfan shirts, in tow with banners, streamers, signs, and treats for the boys. My love and appreciation for the sport continued to grow at CMU (Fire Up Chips!).

The relationship my dad and I had was incredibly special, and wrestling made it even more amazing. He passed away in 2012, and talking wrestling with him is one of the things I miss the most.

Central Michigan is my Alma Mater so I always root for them. Moreso now as a couple people from my old high school are on the team(I graduated HS when they were in elementary school. Hahaha), and also a few kids I coached against the few years I was a teacher/assistant wrestling coach are on the current team as well.

Wresting is really the only sport where I don’t hold collegiate allegiance in the state of Michigan. I’ll root for all Michigan schools to have success. Much different than football season where I’m still a Chippewa but I will pull for state to have success and beat Michigan because wolverine fans are so obnoxious and drive me nuts. Hahaha!
