This is true. I know several that would be that type but no one ever explained how to handle the political aspects of working in schools and had no idea what they need to do outside the technical side. So by the time they figure it out they’ve burned out

Doc, no apology needed here. Yes, a lengthy post but a pure wrestling post that imo was pretty much spot on.

I associate people who do that with wrestling in the same category as the wannabe tuff guy youth coaches

When I was coaching in college I had a guy leave about a half dozen messages with our athletic secretary wanting to join our program as an assistant (there was no job opening, he just wanted a job); he explicitly told her to tell me that he had "coached with Dan Gable."  I had never heard of the this guy before, and I knew the main staff members at Iowa for the past decade or so, but I this guy's name did not ring any bells.  I thought he had possibly been a grad assistant or volunteer coach or maybe associated with the HWC.  When I could finally track it down, I discovered he had been a counselor at a Dan Gable wrestling camp for a week about 20 years before. He finally landed a high school job using the same ploy and was fired within two months of getting the job (I'm sure Gable was pissed to see a beloved protege treated so disrespectfully).  Got me thinking about all the folks I "coached with" in my lifetime....

In my opinion KJ is simply not the big-picture CEO type that is required to run a national program at a high level. That's very different than being an assistant to one of the best CEO's in college wrestling in Sean Bormet though. I think he will excel in this role and be an absolute beast for them on the recruiting trail.

I don’t necessarily disagree. But I’m old school, better positioning and an attack to both sides are a must. Even if the primary attack is eons better you have to have “something” to open up both sides, especially if you don’t have much upper body.
As far as Metcalf, it kinda was weird to me how he abandoned the knee pull single he used a bunch to only have the high c

I think I get frustrated more with the people pretending to be deep but aren’t. The try hard youth coaches and dad’s especially

Would he wrestle 87 in GR?  Thats a 22 lb gap and Hancock is still young.
Amos splits his time. He has too given his folk commitments. I know he has entered greco competitions for a long time but how much does actually train greco compared to full time oversees greco people. I did not like what I saw against Mileshin. He looked raw and not fluid. Like someone who lacks hours on the mat doing greco.  Heavier weights do have more of lee way for strength and athleticism but....

Most of his set ups from ties are “slicker” type elbow and drag stuff. He doesn’t really have a under-hook, club or power set up. From a pure offense standpoint. He either dives from space or relies on slick stuff in close

3 years so not the longest but not great. Greco basically held serve for what it dies every 1-2 years. Bleh overall. 1 medal.

Im more worried about long term with WCAP getting cut the trickle down effects

I said this in a longer post earlier but I think that Greco will always suffer even if the academy’s improve it because it simply won’t be available to average kids and you won’t get late bloomers or non academy kids like a Burroughs or Kolin Moore. It’s also not helped by the fact that I know plenty of coaches who may not be “high level” but can teach solid basic fundamentals in folk/free. I know “maybe” 3/4 Greco

Dake gets a title at 74 KG.
He is going to keep moving down in weight as he gets younger and secure titles consecutively at 70 KG and 65 KG.
The reverse of what he did in his former NCAA life.
    Good job, Benjamin Button!

The 10 years at the job qualifier makes this a lot tougher, especially because a lot of the usual suspects (Oregon State, Indiana, Michigan State) actually did the dang thing and replaced their long time coaches. I'm struggling to think of a P5 school that realistically has high expectations with a long time lame duck coach, which I think is great for the sport.
