jp157 reacted to wrestlingnerd in So can Iowa stop destroying Lee future now?
You are still talking past my point about timeline, for crying out loud. There was never any scenario in which he could "sit out the NCAA season" and also get "ready for OTTs" as you say, because the timing of the OTTs was never clear early enough due to COVID.
Here it is in a way that cannot be confused:
March, 2019: Lee tears his ACL in the finals of NCAAs. You can't fault the Brands for "making" him wrestle that year since he was not hurt until 5 minutes into the last 7 minutes of the season. Lee was redshirted almost the whole year prior, prompting calls to "Free the Lee."  CHOICE: Option A: Get surgery the day after NCAAs and sit 9-12 months, thereby losing a shot at the 2020 Olympics given the trials would've happened shortly after he got cleared to have a live go. Option B: Rehab hard, minimize live goes, and give the OTT a shot. Operate after the Olympics. Lee chose option B. Can you seriously blame him or Brands?? Everyone was mad at Brands for not giving Lee more freestyle mat time. Now we  know Lee was rehabbing and being prudent given his choice of B.  December, 2019: Lee finally makes his first freestyle appearance (in, what, 3 years?) at the Senior Nationals. Obliterates the field and looks the best he's ever looked. Nobody was calling for Brands' head then, for good reason. Choice B was looking damn good. Not for the University of Iowa, but for Team USA. COVID19 happens. Fck us all. OTT gets canceled. Olympics are at risk and even now, they are not definitively on a yuear later. 2019-2020 NCAA season: Lee decides to wrestle, and how can you blame him after what he did at Senior Nationals? THroughout the season Brands gets called a duck or orange because he sat Lee a few times. Now we know why. March, 2020: NCAAs get canceled. We still don't know whether the OTTs also get canceled or whether the Olympics will happen and if so, when. There was serious and credible talk about a multi-month delay but not an outright cancelation in 2020. CHOICE:  Option A: Get surgery and miss the OTT Option B: Rehab more, minimize live goes.  Uncertainty around OTT and Olympic timing persists until 2020-2021 NCAA season is under way. Only in 2021 do we confirm that the OTTs are in fact happening and when. March, 2021: Lee tears another ACL.  CHOICE: Option A: Get surgery immediately, skip NCAAs, and therefore also the OTT. Option B: Delay surgery and rehab. This was all an incredibly unfortunate sequence of events and shtty luck. But such is life. Pray tell, where exactly was the perfect and "best for Spencer" time to take a year off? Now that he has not one but two bum knees and is clearly not wrestling near his potential, choosing option A this time is perfectly defensible and of course a responsible choice. But is it that abhorrent and unethical to give Lee an opportunity to see how NCAAs go against a field that he could clearly dominate?
I am as pissed off about what happened as you, but to throw Brands under the bus is inappropriate and disingenuous.

Even back when Gable was the coach, this was often a pattern that Iowa had - mathematically clinch the team title before the finals, and they relax somewhat in the finals and not perform quite up to expectations.

But but.. Andrew Long suffering real consequences for his behavior..  before being shown his athletic ability gave him 10th chances others didn’t get..  would’ve benefited Iowa not Penn State

I think people aren’t understanding that Spencer clearly understands all of this.. he’s not that much of a closed book.
It really comes across that belonging to a team and something bigger than himself matters a great deal to him. I’m well aware many see and approach wrestling as a super duper selfish f everyone but me sport. Spencer doesn’t seem to like that or benefit from that. He specifically said his teammates belief in him is what made him think he could do it.

I think people blaming the Brands or Iowa’s team for his decision need to understand that.

Do I want a healthy Spencer to rep the US at Tokyo? Hell yeah. But people are throwing what “they” want on him

I’m simply sick of of grandstanding idiots making it harder to actually address and fix real issues like the “simple” person on this thread.

Good to see the refs having the courage to call stalling when it was warranted, regardless of the situation. I was glad to see RBY win. But, let's be honest, he stalled the vast majority of the 2nd and 3rd periods. I'd much rather have the refs call stalling when there is stalling rather than swallow their whistles and let guys stall without consequence.

Damn. Rocky Elam loses first round to the 26 seed (who ends up making the semis) and I thought he had no chance to come back and AA. He beats the 23, 9, 2, and then 3 seed (by MD). That's a good run. Hope he can keep it going.

The toughness he showed in that second round match was incredible. I hope it put to rest all bs people were saying that he medically forfeited to Wentzel “cause he was losing”

Ohio does .. and placing top 8 in two divisions in a state with more programs that any other 3 states combined won’t water it down. additionally, if one cares about purity. Go play with the big boys nationally.

Smaller programs having relative success helps builds numbers and depth. Gives kids more exposure. Even Ben Askren talked about how many deserving California kids were passed over by Arizona kids who had better “on paper resumes” when he was a coach at ASU.

The state tournaments and scholastic wrestling should be used to grow the sport and provide opportunities for relative success for big and small teams. If one wants prestige or to brag about purity, they should go to Reno, Fargo and Super32

California is a classic example of how only having one division actually hurts their ability to get more of their high level kids exposed and the accompanying opportunities
