It is utterly fascinating to me and a coaching buddy how things that are well known deterrents to new people are blown off by people who either.. blow it off or make excuses like “generational”
One would also think that this generation actually needs wrestling more so than past generations. For those very same excuses given for shrinking numbers.

oh yes there’s the youth coach line “if a kid doesn’t first join cause of a singlet he’s not tough enough anyway”.. which is ridiculous on so many levels
And do people not realize that we should want my to get people more involved? Or is it cooler to be part of the shrinking “tuff” crowd.

Considering how barren the cupboard was at OU, as well as how downhill the culture had become when he arrived.. I’d say he’s actually done a very good job. I also am of the opinion he’s probably much better as an assistant coach than a head coach. I hope it’s absolutely clear that I’m not saying he’s a “bad” head coach btw..

My opinion about how much he affected Ohio State’s wrestling is based off.. what I’ve observed in person at matches and on film, what other college coaches have said about him as well as what the actual athletes have said about his impact..

I’m well aware of the results. No I don’t “hate” Ohio State. My personal observation is that their ability to develop athletes has diminished more and more since Rosseli left.

You don’t see Tom Ryan tOSU developing regular or mid tier guys into AA or national championship level caliber.. the way an NC State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Penn state have done with a regular to semi regular rate. I could go on.

(I also think Rosseli leaving played a factor in Snyder’s regression the last few years). No I’m not a Rosseli fanboy. It’s my observation )

Tom Ryan is a great recruiter, runs the program well, good at fundraising and has for all intents and purposes unlimited resources along with “gray area” benefits of the RTC.. those things go a long long way. He’s extremely good at acquiring elite talent that comes in ready to go right away. That still doesn’t change my opinion of his track record when it comes to developing athletes. Especially in comparison to the other top tier coaches

If you want to hear actual harsh criticism of Ohio State and their development of athletes, listen to some of the Inside Trip podcast. They’re both Ohio guys through and through.

When Eirman got on top of him I knew it wasn't going to end well. I told anybody who would listen he had been ridden out for whole periods by Arizona high schoolers. In college it's much worse.

Rob Koll pretty much is just the CEO guy when it comes to day to day operations and training at Cornell. There’s several schools like that. Most of them seem to function effectively.

He is a perfect example of what proper parenting, proper coaching, with just the right physical skills can produce. He also just seems to “get” wrestling or have an intuitive feel for it. He also seems to have the proper mental approach overall as well.

It staggers me how few people truly pay attention to how differently most of the kids, who make it through the club systems and do well in college.. are parented and “coached” differently than what most wrestling parents do.

I'll apologize in advance for making this sound political, but just making an observation.  When the former president of the United States gets (got) on Twitter and name calls, and rants, and attacks others, with seemingly no repercussions, then it sort of makes that type of behavior seem more acceptable to some (which it is not).

The effect of the grab is conjecture? Despite it it being literally the thing that prevented a Palmer score?

Without the singlet grab the match turns into a 4-3 Palmer match. Now, can one legitimately argue Metcalf would’ve escaped and won 6-4/6-5 in regulation or OT? Most certainly.
Of course scoring the go ahead takedown in a 3-2 match could make a difference

    What the..

Smith wrestled from ties all the time. By 92 he didn’t score from a (single) low single. He also used an Abas snap regularly. I did a film study of all his scores and attacks once. Watched over 50 matches from 86 through 92. He actually often would hit a post to a straight on head inside single when people were shutting down his elbow control and fakes.
Additionally, the matches smith didn’t tie up a lot and wasn’t attacking at a high rate.. he did get dinged for passivity.
JO doesn’t pull the trigger. At all. Especially if you compare it to smith. JO doesn’t hit low singles that often.

Don’t whine about the rules. Burroughs has adjusted through the rule changes of the last decade and can actually tie up and pull the trigger.

eh before I rant on. TLDR: could people actually watch film beyond the same 5 top YouTube vids
