I’m reminded of the Daniel Tosh bit where he talks about the absurdity of “pretending the vault affects my patriotism”.

The fake patriot in this thread is reminding me of that bit

Gotcha. With this issue people haven’t really been scared to say what they think from what I’ve seen so far.

Most support or distaste seems to be automatically happening along ideological leanings.

The most harsh vitriol though, from what I’ve seen, seems to be coming from “I’d have played in the NFL for free” and hardcore elementary coach guy.
I don’t think she should have stepped away. Or at least she should’ve before the Olympics started. But listening to people that never were in a competitive sport/event beyond high school criticize and belittle a 4 time gold medalist the way they are.. is tiresome

Considering the things I’ve heard about Mike Mal. And about his club..  From very reliable sources. As well as the opinions of some very high level coaches on his “expertise”. None of which have been actually brought up…
There is absolutely nothing wrong with him saying Mike Mal should talk less during breakdown videos with high level wrestlers.

If the thread referenced things I alluded to in the first paragraph.. you’d have a point. As it stands, I don’t see a problem with it

Exactly. And I think Ruth will be useful for getting out of state kids. I get the impression Poeta won’t have trouble getting instate kids

I grew up in a MLM supplement company household. Claims like Dakes make me skeptical out of habit.

on other hand. Academia can be very annoying and condescending prigs… slow to adopt new ideas..
they are still better supported and better researched than the vast vast majority of the “skeptics” like those on this thread
I’d probably be more okay with the “skepticism” if the majority of the people I know pushing it hadn’t peaked in high school

What has been in bad faith specifically?

Are you trying to say that stating things like “it’s not normal for a standard 43 year old woman athlete to walk into a sport and immediately be top 8 in world” are bad faith arguments.

I would say that the people on this thread, including myself, have gone out of their way not to disparage transgender people but to focus on the topic of whether or not it’s proper for them to compete in female athletics and the implications of that.
Not a single person dissed on the lifter herself. Everyone has talked about her using her chosen gender.

Most of the irritation has come from people pretending that there isn’t an advantage.

Though I’m not a mental weakling and actually look at the news and views of different sources. I actually actively work to understand why those I don’t agree with or even despise think the way they do.

I think a good way to look at this is from a science view danced around so far. Since they don’t have to do any transition beyond identifying and taking hormones.
Biologically.. they are basically the equivalent males suffering from the effects of severe overtraining and Low T.. competing against biological females.

And Average male athletes regularly do extremely well against elite females..

Also, anyone who know jack squat about powerlifting and the physical realities of female athletics… understands perfectly how much of an advantage having stronger joints and a denser frame would provide…

This is why I’m getting irritated … any actual understanding of high level athletics and training. Basic biology . has actually coached both men and women. On top the actual concrete examples we have… makes very clear a male body with low T clearly still retains advantages…

People arguing otherwise.. either are ignorant or deliberately being disingenuous

Well considering how the mma fighter, the D3 bb player, and now this weight lifter have gone from…  mediocre to average “male” competitors.. to the top 10% or better of “women’s competitors..… (those are top of head examples). On top of the other info… a few things seem apparent.
    1. It’s not as “simple” as “da hormone levels”. A 43 year old who we are assuming is not juicing is a medal contender in women’s and not in men’s .. and for most top tier athletes.. mid thirties is “old”.. I’m genuinely curious as to how “she” did in her “male” age group much less Olympic level
    2. It is an issue that shouldn’t just be hand waved away with the “don’t be prejudice” argument
    3. Many actual women competitors are irritated by this and how it can potentially negate their years of hard work
    4. Right wing pundits most definitely overblow the issue that isn’t “that common” to create moral outrage and to keep their base riled up. Hardcore lefties are making it easy by trying to hand wave any discussion as prejudice .

One must be honest… from both ends about this issue.

So since she’s only in the top echelon of her sport. Not the prohibitive favorite. That somehow negates the clear fact that she is a legitimate competitor well past prime age. Top 8 is all American. Meaning if this was wrestling she’d be a favorite to be on podium. Not just participating.

You also said.. “I don’t think the age matters that much”. “It’s a lot of motivation involved”
So you are deliberately ignoring… or are ignorant of the bare truth that no matter how “motivated”.. very very few athletes not on PEDs are competitive in pro/Olympic sports past their early 30s… much less older… so a 43 year old “only” being top 8 is still an important data point..
So that leaves us with one of two conclusions.
One, you know all of this and are deliberately being obtuse to virtue signal
Two, you don’t understand the basic metrics and facts of high level competition and are simply backing an ideology of “inclusivity” that only acknowledges data and science when convenient

No, your instinct to mock Fix is right on. I want him to get there every year and then just look at the guy for 7+ minutes while periodically looking quizzically at the ref or JWS. Then when he loses, we can all laugh and laugh.
Similar but different: I wish the rules hadn't changed and that Heil would have won three. Then as he released his crotch lock, rolled off his back, and got his hand raised, we could all have laughed/booed and laughed/booed.
