ThorsteinV reacted to jon in Willie at Flo
This separation perhaps a good thing for Saylor, definitely a bad thing for Flo. Willie's gimmick/character can be irksome and some of his politics/opinions spurs disagreement but, in my humble opinion, he's not just a loudmouth. Gotta give credit where it's due. When one looks past the gimmick it's easy to see good qualities such as his responsiveness to feedback, his diplomatic demeanor on this forum, his love for HS wrestling, his vision for wrestling as a lucrative venture, his willingness to 'embrace the grind' when it comes to rankings. Surely this list of good qualities is not exhaustive! I bet a lot of Flo's admirable involvement in experimentation comes from Willie's ideas. Flo would do well to have more personnel like Willie and fewer personnel like some other folks there.

He saw how much fun it was training with Nickal at U23s and decided to transfer. No telling where he ends up ;)

The hyperbole in this post is off the charts.
There is zero chance he ever dominates FS like he did NCAA wrestling.  Nickal had a level of NCAA dominance that no FS wrestler ever has had.  It's absurd to suggest.
It's almost as absurd to suggest he could be the best par terre American ever with some training.  He's already 23.  At that age John Smith was taking apart the world and doing a lot of it with a leg lace from par terre that Nickal will never approach.
I really don't understand the need to make an awesome win into the best win ever.  Or to make a super exciting prospect into the best guy on Earth.  Isn't it enough that Nickal just wrecked an age level world tournament?  Can't that be celebrated without declaring him about to be the best ever?

Reminds me of the PSU argument that Nolf wasn't wrestling in the 3rd because he didn't need to score vs. Hidlay.
Nolf fans said "Yeah, maybe the officials got the call wrong, but Nolf would have scored more points if he needed to."

Let me revise it for your triggered sensibilities. Arujau looks like a real solid maybe 50/50 threat to beat Spencer Lee next year at NCAA's, if neither redshirts.

Not sure if they still emphasize this nowadays but a few decades back when I officiated international styles the resulting potential strategy change due to a different score was intentionally dismissed since you were always supposed to be going 100% so how could anything change?

Can we all at least agree that the rules (supposing they were appropriately applied) are sub-optimal.  If there is an end-of-period review that results in a score change, the wrestling should continue at the time of the score change.  The idea that the wrestler's tactics and the entire dynamics of the match do not change in response to the score change is preposterous - only to be outdone by the fact that our rules somehow do not take this into account.

Zain train. They got it right, but went back quite a ways in the match to correct it. Yianni didn't have two for exposure. Great adjustments by Zain.

ThorsteinV reacted to qc8223 in Why is Downey being Given (or Gifted) the spot?
The only reason they would be wrestling off is if they lose at final x at the weight they already chose. Pat Downey did significantly more towards winning the 86 kg spot than other WTT winners by actually wrestling 86 kg. Also, USA did not give DT a bye. He earned it through pre-set criteria (like the one you're arguing against right now). Remove DT from the field and there's nobody sitting in final x. Downey wins the open. Heflin wins the trials, Downey beats him at final x. What you are arguing for is either the ability to lose a tournament (the trials process in this case) and then reenter that same tournament at a different weight you might think you can win at for a second chance or the ability to change weights in the middle of a tournament because you found out the competition was easier at a different weight. Nonsense either way.
We have a trials process for a reason: transparency and fairness. If the point is only to send the best team, we might as well just have the coaches pick whoever they think matches up best internationally or who has the best results.

Yes the Greco process is different and it’s a bad one. Essentially they wrote in the qualifications procedure that any athlete who qualified the weight for the pan am games would sit in the WTT Finals.
Robby did this by placing silver at the 2018 pan-am championship.
He received a bye to the finals of the World Team Trials because of an event that took place in May 2018.

Sadulaev: world champ at 86 kg. World champ at 97 kg (despite weighing less).
DT: world champ at 86 kg. Did not make the team at 74 kg. Has never beaten the world champ at 79 kg despite many tries. Has a 2-1 losing record to the world champ at 92 kg.
“Pound for pound.” There is no discussion.
Most dominant champ at their current weight? There is a discussion but still the same answer.

I think it is, especially in the context of P4P rankings.  These rankings are pretty obscure, you're comparing wrestlers across weights and evaluating which wrestlers are better on a weight-adjusted basis.  There isn't a lot of information for this purpose in the first place so why throw anything away?  I am pretty sure Flo's P4P rankings are more consistent with my view.
Like now, I wouldn't argue at all if he was the UWW Freestyle Wrestler of the Year again but I'm not going to crown him with the P4P champ if Sadulaev also wins a world championship.  Sadulaev has been dominant at 86kg, 92kg, and 97kg -- which seems extremely useful for a discussion on P4P rankings -- but you would rather ignore that information.
