A teammate of mine had to wrestle Mocco in college. We always joked how he probably just ate broken glass and stared at a blank wall until wrestling time. Nice seeing the human side of an absolute machine.

Says stay away from Gatorade. Too much sucralose and coloring from petroleum byproducts. I say it makes me pee out my butt, and hurts my head. I say drink coconut water. Not flashy flavor names, just basic hydrating minerals. Makes you feel good, and shows what drinking basic earth juices'll get you.

Started wrestling when I was cut from the baseball team. Really considered not wrestling after my first year, but my dad was college buddies with my high school coach, so I refused to let my dad look like a punk with a wuss kid. Still was not good my 2nd year, but broke .500. State qualifier as a senior. State tourney was a carry tournement so I was out after first round. Refused to let my career end that way. Trained for a year while attending school close to home. Transferred to the only D1 school in the state my second year of college. I was the least credentialed kid in the room, but I worked my ass off the compete. Trashed my back in practice 2 days before Thanksgiving, and that was all she wrote. Took third at the only tournament I attended. Everyone else on the team that went was a state/Fargo placer, and I barely qualified for state. Was the only one that placed. My last match I beat a kid that ended up being a NAIA runner-up. I always tell people I won my first and last match ever, to heck with the middle. Been coaching high school for ten years now.

    Side notes:
    1) college wrestling was nothing like I imagined. I thought it was gonna be a room full of guys driven to be national champions. Wrong. So many of those dudes were looking for a good time. Early morning practices smelled like natty light and whoever they were with the night before.
    2) crazy how everyone before the internet era I wrestled with in college was a match away from placing at Fargo.

If Suriano is actually hurt again, that makes Lee's chances of making it to the finals even better.

There have been some elite guys to post: Lewis, McGinnis, the guy that placed 2nd in one of the worlds(Stan Dzwiec?). I think the fact so many didn't reach the pinnacle is what drives them to stay involved. When you reached the top, what's left. I know if I'd won, I'd probably be done. It's a fun game every season now of when is some kids gonna ask me what I placed. I always tell them I DNP'd like a champ. What's more anti-heroic than a loser coaching champs?

Dake's mat returns in the match were sick. Knowing how strong Frank is/was speaks volumes to Dake's own strength. From looking like a kid freshmen against Marion, to looking like a larger kid sophomore against Molinaro.

I remember them making good use of transfers in the mid 2000s. What impressed me most about tOSU winning it in 15 was that it was the first "non-transfer" class to win the title in 6 year. Iowa with 3 VT/Iowa teams, and PSU with 3 ISU/PSU teams.

Podcast over the summer with APS rep said that Nike is the sole provider/sponsor for world teams. They were also the sole rep at Fargo which caused a stink with groups like Rudis setting up across the street. Rep said that Nike realized they screwed up and are trying to rebuild trust in the brand and its support of wrestling. I was a hater of all things Nike until I heard that podcast. Still refuse to spend my money on their products, but now I wear gifts that are Nike. Interesting listen from June on mat talk online.
