Got to know Clarissa when she was training at Mizzou with Sammy Henson. She’s first class all the way and a super nice person. Really happy for her and this opportunity. Hawkeye wrestling will be blessed with her running the ship. Congratulations.

165 will be a fun weight.  Griffith Marinelli, Wick, Kharchla, Wentzel, Wittlake.  But I would agree O Toole is my pick for title winner this year.

I didn't attend Barcelona (though I sure wish I was there, naturally. ;-)  ) Thanks to signing up to the Olympic Triplecast, plus taking some vacation time during the FS event, I was able to watch, pretty much the entire GR & FS tournament. Some of the greco was entertaining, watching those sessions that I taped.. But I taped pretty much most of the FS events while I actively watched the sessions. I really thought Tim Vanni was going to medal @ 105.5 until he lost to the So. Korean, then the Romanian. Zeke Jones ran roughshod over his pool, until he ran into a brick wall from No. Korea @ 114.5. Loved it that Chris Campbell finally got his Olympic medal (albeit bronze) after he lost to Khadartsev (1st rnd?... not sure. I no longer have the tapes :-(  ) But the best match that I so remember vividly, was Bruce Baumgartner revenge match over David Gobedshivilli (since losing to him @ Seoul finals in '88)  It was 0-0, going into the last 15 or so second in the match. they were whistled OOB. As they both approached the center of the circle for a re-start, Bruce noticed DG's body language as he was resigned to the match going into OT. Bruce shot off his mark at the sound of the whistle and double legged Gobi to his back for a 3 point exposure. W/ virtually little time for any equalizer from DG... Bruce wiped out a potential barrier to what eventually be his second Olympic gold medal.
You can't make this up... pure excitement!

Funny story about Trice. His teammates begged me to introduce him as Jerry at the Mizzou dual, which I did. His face was priceless and his teammates were rolling with laughter. Dom Bradley got a kick out of it as well. The only one not amused, besides Trice, was the Mizzou event coordinator. Some things are just worth it.

No love for Matt Demaray from MN? I know he had a few losses, but when he made the finals as an 8th grader, that was unheard of at the time. He won 3 in a row before being shocked in semis as a senior. He then won 2x NCAA titles at Wiscy, and then 4 straight US opens. He beat B Satiev at the ‘94 World Cup as well. He “looked” more like a D1 wrestler as a freshman than anyone I’ve ever seen.

How many times has Cox weighed in at a USAW event in the age of COVID protocols? Do the modified procedures add credence to the argument that a reasonable person might believe that he was to weigh in later than published, since only a few wrestlers were in his position of a delayed start and there was a clear effort to reduce crowds? It seems reasonable to me that he wouldn’t have questioned KJ under these specific and unprecedented circumstances even if he had known the published weigh in time was 8, suspecting that limited exceptions were granted in the spirit of COVID social distancing.

I was never close to world class level, but isn’t it reasonable to assume that Cox was a couple under last night, went home, ate his usual meal, showed up what he thought was an hour before the deadline knowing he might be a few ounces over but confident he could lose it with a quick 5-10 min sweat, and did exactly that? KJ’s bad info is what totally screwed him. Don’t all wrestlers at that level depend on their coaches to manage these types of logistical distractions for them so they can focus on prepping for performance?

That seems way more likely than Cox mismanaging his cut for the first time ever and struggling to make weight in what he knew was the allotted time.

There's a reason why he was fired from ISU. FFS, this is unbelievable. Way worse than I thought. Sorry, KJ, big fan of yours as a wrestler, but you're a moron.

This is not exactly true. O’toole is not and never will be a weight cutter. If you ask him what he’d prefer, he’d say 165. He BELIEVES in the get better, not lighter philosophy. It was obvious, in several matches, that he was getting overpowered and had trouble finishing positions he’s easily converted to points all season. Until he achieves a singularly next level technical advantage, similar to Askren, he will not see Askrenesque results. That said, another 10 lbs of lean muscle and he becomes scary good at 165.

tigerfan got a reaction from jross in How do we incentivize scoring vs winning?
This is admittedly out of the box, but as I reflect on the finals specifically, and college wrestling more generally, it occurs to me that we might be able to do better. The following idea is really just brainstorming and is full of problems, but is intended to start a conversation. I realize there are lots of hardcore purists out there that will dismiss my ideas as ridiculous. If that’s you, no need to respond to this, you won’t be contributing anything constructive.
Is it possible that we could score team points based on match points, win or lose? If a match ends 12-8, both teams would receive 12 and 8 points, respectively. Falls would be worth 30 points for the winner, the loser would still get their points scored prior to getting pinned. In tourneys, advancement would be worth 20 points, divided by the round it occurred, so first round win at NCAA’s would be 20\5 = 4 points, semifinals win would be 20/2 = 10 points, etc. consolations would remain halved.

Fans drive sport survival, and fans want scoring, even in losing efforts. There are a lot of benefits to something like that, but this post is already too long. Of course there are potential drawbacks as well, but ultimately who wouldn’t rather lose 11-10 than 2-1? Our zero mistake mentality stifles risk taking and ultimately scoring. Maybe I’m the only one, but hand fighting and riding are boring. NO one cheers when their wrestler clears a wrist or stalemates a front headlock. Fans want scoring, and wrestling needs fans. Feel free to flame away.
