There's a reason why he was fired from ISU. FFS, this is unbelievable. Way worse than I thought. Sorry, KJ, big fan of yours as a wrestler, but you're a moron.

This is not exactly true. O’toole is not and never will be a weight cutter. If you ask him what he’d prefer, he’d say 165. He BELIEVES in the get better, not lighter philosophy. It was obvious, in several matches, that he was getting overpowered and had trouble finishing positions he’s easily converted to points all season. Until he achieves a singularly next level technical advantage, similar to Askren, he will not see Askrenesque results. That said, another 10 lbs of lean muscle and he becomes scary good at 165.

tigerfan got a reaction from jross in How do we incentivize scoring vs winning?
This is admittedly out of the box, but as I reflect on the finals specifically, and college wrestling more generally, it occurs to me that we might be able to do better. The following idea is really just brainstorming and is full of problems, but is intended to start a conversation. I realize there are lots of hardcore purists out there that will dismiss my ideas as ridiculous. If that’s you, no need to respond to this, you won’t be contributing anything constructive.
Is it possible that we could score team points based on match points, win or lose? If a match ends 12-8, both teams would receive 12 and 8 points, respectively. Falls would be worth 30 points for the winner, the loser would still get their points scored prior to getting pinned. In tourneys, advancement would be worth 20 points, divided by the round it occurred, so first round win at NCAA’s would be 20\5 = 4 points, semifinals win would be 20/2 = 10 points, etc. consolations would remain halved.

Fans drive sport survival, and fans want scoring, even in losing efforts. There are a lot of benefits to something like that, but this post is already too long. Of course there are potential drawbacks as well, but ultimately who wouldn’t rather lose 11-10 than 2-1? Our zero mistake mentality stifles risk taking and ultimately scoring. Maybe I’m the only one, but hand fighting and riding are boring. NO one cheers when their wrestler clears a wrist or stalemates a front headlock. Fans want scoring, and wrestling needs fans. Feel free to flame away.

Alan Waters, 136-14, with most of those losses his true freshman year, finished 3rd and 4th, while seeded 1st his last 2 years. Dude was money during season all 4 years. Sure miss starting duals that way.

It’s hilarious that an entire thread dedicated to upsets somehow concludes that Mizzou wrestlers are seeded too high, while all the other upsets are simply upsets. I enjoy the willful ignorance of certain posters, I really do.

I didn't complain about it and I won't say what's complaint worthy on an internet message board.  But their staff is awesome, does an awesome job, and will always get national fan pushback for seeds.  Then 2 weeks will go by, they will perform well, if not quite up to the lofty seeds, and they will be talked about as being awesome for the next 50 weeks until people complain leading up to nationals next year.

Yea right.  Mizzou wrestles Big 10 teams every year that will wrestle them, Okie St. & & Iowa St. & UNI from the Big 12, Arizona St. from the Pac 12, UVA & Va Tech from the ACC, Cornell & Lehigh from the EIWA, etc.
Despite being in a less than ideal Conference (MAC), Mizzou makes every effort to wrestle a quality schedule to any reasonable standard.

I see Mizzou with 6 AA’s, but only one semi finalist. I don’t see any of the lower ranked teams doing better. Plus, 141, 165, and 197 are bonus guys and will rack up points on the backside. I agree Mizzou could fall to 7th or 8th, but 4-8 will all be really close.

Everybody knows Iowa wins, but what about 2-10?
    2 PSU
    3 NCST
    4 Mizzou
    5 ASU
    6 OKST
    7 VT
    8 Mich
    9 Nebby
    10 ISU
    Thoughts?

First, let me say all the work that goes into that site is much appreciated. It is an invaluable resource to wrestling fans.
I know they are striving to constantly improve their ranking metrics, and I also know that they are a cumulative perspective so any given year they may be skewed by a wrestler’s past performance.
That said, I’ve followed the week by week movements pretty closely and there are still some headscratchers.
I think they place a pretty high emphasis on bonus points, but I suggest they revisit this. Shouldn’t a bonus percentage be figured based on total matches rather than wins only? And how is getting bonused in losses figured in, or are losses completely ignored? Does a guy who’s 5-4 with 4 pins deserve a higher bonus rate than a guy who’s 13-0 with 9 pins?
Also, from what I can tell, guys with losses to highly ranked opponents benefit too much in terms of RPI relative to their own body of work. Take the case of 133 Sullivan from WVU, a FR with a career record of 7-3, who failed to place in the Big 12, who’s highest ranked win is over Mizzou’s back up Crawford. Sullivan does have the honor of getting stuck by Fix, however.
He has consistently been ranked higher all year than Schmidt, who won the MAC, is 10-1 this year and 57-24 career. What could possibly explain this, if not an over reliance on RPI, assuming Sullivan’s IS actually higher?
Because wrestlestat is so great, I really hope they can improve their ranking calculus to be even better, especially since Flo has pretty much lost their marbles and is only marginally better than Win, who I don’t think even follow the sport, other than to give out a trophy each year that has become a joke.

I know for a fact that Mizzou tried for years to schedule Iowa every year, but Iowa coaches declined. This was about around the time Mizzou beat Iowa in Carver for the National Duals championship.

Boo hoo! I’m so tired of this sentiment. Mizzou has proven itself to be one of the top teams for over a decade, better than anyone other than the big 4 and maybe Cornell, going back 15 years. Maybe you want NCAA DI wrestling reduced to the Big 12/10, but most of us think that’s foolhardy. Every year there are multiple threads about how good Brian Smith is, and how underrated he remains, despite his unparalleled success. Your ignorance is showing.
