Isn’t it all relative? Doesn’t really matter what level you were, wrestling someone on a whole different level is a similar experience, I would think. But maybe not. I’d love to hear those stories as well.
As a very high level state qualifier, lol, I can tell you that wrestling the returning champ who went on to win 2 DIII championships, was surreal. On our feet we were evenly matched 0-0 after the first. Then I chose down. At one point I think we must have went OOB, I remember that much. 400 tilts later, it was a 16-0 tech in the 2nd. I literally did not know which way was up and was physically dizzy when I tried to stand and shake his hand. Whole ‘nother level indeed.

Not to mention, he ducked Jeremiah Kent in the Mizzou dual. Maybe we should talk more about Kent. Didn’t start wrestling until HS, and coaches at Mizzou said he was the most natural talent they’d seen, on par with Cox. He’s starting to learn how to wrestle, and it shows.

tigerfan got a reaction from drag it in Man how good is Brian Smith?
Eblen was devastated and ashamed of his actions after that incident. He was so frustrated that he was losing and would fail to achieve AA, he lost his head. Man, he was so broken up about embarrassing himself and the team, yet alone possibly costing them a trophy, when I saw him at the team social it nearly broke my heart. I tried to reassure him that the team wouldn’t have been where they were without his contributions over his career, and we were still proud of him. It brought tears to his eyes. And he had the biggest golf ball I’ve ever seen over one eye. Johny is a good dude, as is his parents.

Important to remember that these guys, while men, are still young and growing/maturing. It was a good learning experience I'm sure though I know mizzou and its fans would have preferred a third place trophy over fourth. It is easy to forget this sometimes as fans and I know I have done it myself on these forums. Glad to hear he took the moment to heart and regretted it. Shows solid signs of character growth on his part.

Missouri isn’t exactly a long time top wrestling destination and yet Smith has them up near the top every season. Even with top coaches like Henson and Eierman leaving.
Man, I really wanted him back at MSU once Minkel finally left. Not that he would have came back after a 5 minute conversation with anyone representing the dumpster fire that MSU’s Athletic Department currently is.

Still, back on topic. They lose both Eiermans and haven’t missed a beat. Many thought the way the left showed some internal problems that could cause a serious drop off. Instead,  Hart takes over 141 and is ranked 4th.  On top of that, they should rather easily have all 10 qualify for NCAA’s.

I just can’t imagine any coach doing more with what Missouri has to offer. I am truly very impressed!

At least that’s what the rankings at the time would have predicted. Anyone who still believes that is seriously underestimating Mizzou.

Mizzou takes the dual 31-7. Carr is legit. He’s my pick to win it all at 157. Batista at 197 is really good in neutral, obviously. Mizzou might be the 2nd best dual team in the country behind Iowa.

Mizzou with 9 of 10 in top 15. Only exception is #25 Rocky Elam, who’s shooting up fast.

O’Toole will smash Valencia. Terrible style matchup, and Valencia gets tired. It could get ugly by the end.

Lots of intriguing matchups potentially among these 3 duals.
Who thinks O’Toole beats Valencia? Mauller has Degen and Thompson. I’m hoping Kent can prove he’s for real against Colbray. What matches interest y’all?

    According to wrestlestat.com, since 2014 Mizzou has finished 14, 4, 6, 5, 6, 6 for an average finish of  6.83.
    Michigan had finishes of 17, 11, 9, 10, 4, 5 for an average finish of 9.33.

Seems to me your perception of Michigan being included in teams that are regularly at the top of the heap while Mizzou is only one trying to break into the trophy hunt is misguided. In fact, Mizzou is 5th over that time frame behind the Big 4 of PSU, OSU, tOSU, and Iowa. Cornell and VaTech are right on their heels.

Neb, NCSt, and Minny are solidly in the next pack, with teams like Lehigh, Rutgers, Wisc, Princeton, ASU, etc having aspirations but not quite there yet. Including ISU in this list is simply wishful thinking.

Is it possible that labeling a person as a racist is impossibly simplistic? Do people act/speak in racist ways - yes.  Could DuPont's actions be interpreted as racist by rational people? Yes.  Are complex human beings easily labeled as any "___________ist"? No.  Who here has ever told a lie?  Are we all then liars?  Is that how you would label everyone?  Seems to me that DuPont's actions were unintentionally racist, in that he was mentally ill and not specifically singling out WOC for any reason other than his escalating illness.  But unintentional racism is still racism, in fact far more widespread and problematic than more explicit, intentional racism.  Arguing about whether anyone is "a racist" is a complete waste of time.  If Jackson or others perceived his actions as racist, (rightly so imo) then that is all that matters to me. Now, can we all just move on and recognize that poor people of all colors have far more in common than differences as trivial as race, and that keeping racial fears/distrust on the front page allows the rich and powerful to continue to stack the deck against everyone else for their own economic benefit? Divide and conquer is a strategy of the powerful/wealthy.  Always has been.

what most fail to understand it is much less about race and almost entirely about socio-economics...
but the race baiting keeps us distracted and makes great bite sized clips for the plebians to argue over endlessly and not get anywhere...

tigerfan got a reaction from Plasmodium in Best DI Wrestlers of the 2010s to Never Win an NCAA Title
Not sure. Storley never made the finals and had no where near the freestyle results. Bradley sat behind Ellis, a 2x AA and Champ, so who knows what he would have done. Clearly, his Sr level freestyle results are better than several on the list so I suppose you could argue only Coon and Green clearly had better careers.
There was a lot of internal drama with Ellis, many people said he was beating Ellis in the room the year Ellis won it, and the next year what was Smith supposed to do, sit a returning champ, even if they were neck and neck? I think that deflated Bradley’s motivation for his next 2 years. If Bradley had competed his Sophomore year and won, like Ellis did that year, I’m not sure he wouldn’t have won 2 more. There was definitely some bad blood at the time, though his relationship with Smith and the program has obviously healed over time.

    NCAA seeds:
    Lugo
    O'Connor
    Mauller
    Sasso
    Kolodzik
    Lewallen
Sasso gets the highest seed of any non champ. I suppose many Iowa fans will hope Sasso stays ahead of Mauller, but Mizzou has made a living getting high seeds due to conference champ status. Anyone see it differently?
