Dake can't catch a break in fantasy match ups. Howe/Lewis would be great. I'd give the nod to Varner, and Zab beat Rosholt, Ellis, Erekson, Dudziak, Rey, etc.  WAY tougher bracket.  I'd go with Zabriskie. Was Dhesi the only returning AA in the field this year?

    Not one moment but ...
I was very taken by some cheering scenes. I was in the lower Lehigh section 107 with a perfect view of most of the scoreclocks (not the mats, however). To my immediate right were the Weiler's. We have 3 very good 197s. Gentile, Jakobsen and Weiler. Weiler got the nod last year and Jake rooted for him like a brother. This year the tables were turned. Same thing in reverse.
But a bigger thing to me involved the Mizzou crowd immediately to our left. They had this one guy who was the cheerleader. They did a lot of cheering which was great but two situations stood out (one literally). Our favorite wrestling name's (Brock Mauller) brother was there cheering hard. And standing in front of people a lot without thinking. Nobody complained (he's a big boy though so maybe...). When it was over I noticed he went up the stairs. He came back with a sweatshirt for the cheerleader guy. I saved the best for last- I heard them cheering for an ISU guy at one point. I said something to them kiddingly. The cheerleader was in tears explaining. A lot of you know already but for those who don't- Willie Miklus transferred from Mizzou to ISU to be with his father who had come down with ALS. Once we realized what was going on a lot of Lehigh people cheered him when he came over after winning the blood round.
Just seeing things like that make the trip worthwhile.

Throughout Jan/Feb, Nebraska was ranked 6/7 by Flo. After their apparently poor B1G performance, they fell to 9th in the final rankings, and received seeds they were apparently able to outperform, to the tune of finishing in 10th.  I wouldn't call that the best performing team.
In contrast, after the Scuffle/Midlands, Mizzou (finished 6th) was ranked behind Princeton (finished 15th), Northwestern (finished 22nd), ASU (finished 12th), Minnesota (finished 8th), Nebraska (finished 10th), and NCState (finished 17th).  There was a discussion about Mizzou's soft schedule and their underperformance at NCAA's.  How did that turn out?  Is it possible we put too much emphasis on mid-season tournaments? Cornell, btw, who also skipped the mid-majors in lieu of South Beach Duals, was ranked 15th in Jan and finished 7th.

On a related note, what were the worst ones?  Someone said Mizzou's gold ones looked like a headache feels, which was hilarious.  How about ISU's black/white singlet?  Were those a bargain bin item?

I think Malik gets down to 133, or slots in at 141 for a year..  He was wrestling up to rehab his shoulder and there was no need to cut any weight.  Severado at 125, Mocco will challenge Flynn, Marriott will be back, will he or Wisman bump up? Will Kent breakout at 174? Lots of good problems and questions next year.

All these seeds are lower than the 4 seed so when you are supposed to pick the lowest seed you think you can win then you pick the lowest number that you think can win. 5 and 7 are lower than 4. I hope this helps the confusion of why he picked what he did and why he didn't pick Mauller at the 4.

tigerfan got a reaction from GockeS in How is RPI determined?
I've never understood why the RPI is supposedly a measure of your strength of schedule.  If you wrestle a bunch of teams from the EWL, and they in turn wrestle guys from the EWL, all of their win %'s will be inflated vs teams from the B1G.  Just because you and your opponents have a high win %, doesn't mean they were top notch competition. No disrespect to the EWL, but they don't see the same caliber of wrestlers week in and week out as the B1G does, for example.  IIRC, the first year they switched to the new qualification system, the ACC almost doubled their allocations, yet the number of AA's remained virtually unchanged.  I seem to recall remarking at the time that the new system definitely skewed towards spreading more allocations to the non-traditional powers.  RPI was clearly a factor in subsidizing the qualifications of wrestlers from weaker conferences.  Note: That was before the resurgence of UNC, NCSt, VT, etc.

People bring this up all the time but everybody ignores that every year you have people at NCAAs competing on torn ACLs, badly sprained ankles, etc... our main tournament of the year 100% incentivizes guys to go out and compete while injured if they think they have the tiniest chance at winning the match. At conference tournaments the only penalty for turning a forfeit in to a loss is that it might lower your seed. Nobody is going to force an injured wrestler out in a match where they might get hurt worse just to avoid dropping a few spots in seeding two weeks later. But it will prevent healthy wrestlers from MFFing out as soon as they have secured a qualification.

In order to support the seeding of all 33 participants, it has basically become a mathematical equation. Nomad has a post on Flo that discussed this at length prior to the 2018 championships.

You should know by now that Brian Smith knows there's more to life than wrestling.  Elam may have personal, professional goals that preclude him from spending 5 years on campus if he can finish his degree in 4.  Smith told me personally some years ago that the most common reason he redshirts freshman is so they can get on their feet academically.  Wrestling comes second.  Plus, the season isn't over yet.  Even if Elam fails to AA, it's not like he hasn't been a solid performer overall.  It's damn tough to AA in D1.  Matt Pell, Raymond Jordan, Max Askren, Michael Chandler, Joey Lavallee, Kyle Bradley, Nick Marable, etc. all failed to do it as upperclassmen.

There are 2 McKiernan brothers on SIU's team at 285..  Jake is a senior and is 0-6, but Colton is the one competing in the MAC tournament and is 20-11.  I got confused on that too.  Elam beat the 0-6 brother earlier in the season, not the one he lost to (in pitiful fashion) today.
