  1. In my opinion UWW needs to improve the world championships or create a big event with inside all the disciplines under his umbrella. Not only Olympic styles but also Grappling, Pankration and Beach Wrestling.
Another idea could be the creation of a special ranking with addictional points in different styles.
Like skiing has a world cup with the sum of the points in slalom, g slalom, downhill etc in wrestling you have freestyle, Greco, Beach Wrestling, Grappling and Pankration.

  2. IF it doesn’t hurt freestyle Greco. I don’t have a problem with adding additional styles. I’d prefer more weights.

Gimmick styles like beach wrestling can make irrelevant countries get medals. Which can be beneficial. But it should be also acknowledged for what it is. A gimmick to give lesser countries a chance
My proposal is adding new styles not cut freestyle and greco. Women's beach wrestling is the solution for the absence of female Greco roman. You have only two weight classes. A combination with Nogi Grappling+Pankration in the same event another 8-10.

African countries and Spain have traditional wrestling styles on the sand.

  4. Btw, to be clear, grappling is the catch all term for non-striking hand to hand combat sports. I assume here when you say grappling it is referring specifically to sport no-gi jiujitsu, along the lines of ADCC?

Grappling like submission wrestling style recognised by UWW. It is not simply nogi jujitsu. It has different point system in stand up.

  5. But why does the future of wrestling involve a different sport that is less popular and really only practiced in the U.S. and Brazil?  I think most wrestling fans don't like grappling, just like most grappling fans don't like wrestling.  If anything, grappling is more like Judo than wrestling.
Because Grappling is a wrestling style, like Pankration and Beach Wrestling. Grappling is the evolution of catch as catch can wrestling. The stand up in grappling is essentially freestyle/greco roman wrestling.

  6. Why would grappling even be in contention for addition?  It has a significantly smaller fanbase than wrestling and is practiced by fewer countries.  I'm a fan of wrestling and watch MMA, but I consider grappling to be incredibly boring, bordering on unwatchable. Judo is a better product than grappling.
The  reality is that wrestling will probably never be a completely mainstream sport, but if we actually look at the coverage today vs a couple cycles ago, it has improved. The first step to growing olympic wrestling is converting NCAA fans, and I think channels like Rokfin and Flo are putting in much of the legwork to do that.  The reality though is that wrestling will  never be completely mainstream, but in the world of streaming sports content, it doesn't really have to be. I bet the engagement data from this olympics in wrestling is better than it was 4 years ago, and NBC will take notice.  One thing that would really help though is superstar like Gable sticking around.  Taylor, while a great wrestler, does not have his level of star power. Honestly, I don't think any wrestler in U.S. history does.
With some adjustments in stand up department I think that Grappling nogi is very exciting and it is similar to ancient Greek wrestling. Pankration is another excellent style with a good point system for wrestling techniques. An inclusion beside Greco, Freestyle and woman's Beach Wrestling with different format without a large numbers of medals could be fine.

  7. It's not the first time and it's not the same tournament. Grappling ends on the 14 and the main styles start on the 16, they are separated on the UWW calendar. They just are holding them in the same place. They did the same thing in Kazakhstan where are after 2019 senior worlds ended for FS, GR and WFS they held the grappling world championships in the same venue.
The first time in Russia. They are separate but the environment is the same. In my opinion it is the right way.

  8. FILA actually had submission grappling as a style for a while until they discontinued it several years ago.  I was disappointed, as I thought it was a great addition to the more traditional styles.  I hope they'll give it another try some day.
UWW now has Grappling Nogi and Gi. This month there is the junior world champion in Russia with greco roman, freestyle wrestling and for the first time Grappling!

  9. I hope they add submission grappling. I’m a fan of that sport too.

Beach wrestling isn’t that exciting to me. I’ve watched it. It could be if it was in the Olympics, the quality of competitor would rise. The scoring could use some work too.

I hope they add a dual medal event or something. Even if it’s just the top 4 teams (I think they do 6 in baseball). They could do it across all 3 styles, so it would be for the most well rounded teams. It brings an interesting dynamic. Russia would be the favorite, but the US is significantly better in women’s. Japan would have a good shot too. They are solid at both Men’s and would crush everyone but the US in women’s.
Beach wrestling could be add like "women's greco roman".

  10. There are some rumors about Beach Wrestling. UWW could try to develop a new style or add weight classes. Grappling is another interesting style, like Pankration. Create a wrestling environment like athletics or swimming with multiple styles in two different event (why not in winter and summer Olympic games) could be very interesting.

  11. Ben Askren had interesting take on this as a former Olympian. Instead of wanting to reform the Olympic, his dream is for Wrestling to get big enough one day to be independent of the olympics.

It is not impossible. UWW has Freestyle, Greco, Grappling, Pankration (an mma form) and Beach Wrestling. In my opinion UWW needs to mixed all wrestling styles in the various events and work very hard to develop non Olympic styles. Grappling and mma forms have a great popularity and Olympic wrestling is the key in these styles.

  12. The IOC wanted to get rid of Freestyle too. Even if Freestyle is doing significantly better then Greco in various metrics, it still could get gotten rid of along with Greco because of the nature of how these decisions are made.

Freestyle through its sister style folk  is safe in the US. But internationally?  FS got its weights reduced too.

In the program of the next youth games there is not greco. IOC want a dynamic style.

In the next junior world championships in Russia for the first time you will see Grappling beside Freestyle and Greco...

  13. Interesting that 20% of the poll answers prefer a non-wrestling sport to Greco….and the polling is on a wrestling message board.
I hope that’s not a bad sign for Greco.
I think that beach wrestling and grappling have a better chance in long term. Now there are also new combat sports included.
