  1. I hear ya. I too am amazed by how easy Steveson makes this look. I can offer no comp. After one of the takedowns when he cut Cassioppi and casually backed into the center I was reminded of Matt Damon in "Good Will Hunting" yelling at the douche mathematician, "do you have any idea how easy this is for me?"
  2. I am very impressed by Gable, but the Snyder comp is a little unfair as Snyder consistently wrestled guys who significantly outweighed him so that he could maintain his freestyle weight (~214 lbs). Tough to major guys who might be 40-70 lbs larger.
  3. When is the last time an opposing wrestler got a standing ovation at Carver?
  4. Lots of talk on HR this week that he might need Tommy John surgery.
  5. Marinelli 6-5 over unranked opponent. Things that make you go hmmm.
  6. Nick Lee channelling his inner Jason Nolf giving Danny Bertoni a ride to the Winn-Dixie to pick up some groceries.
  7. @flyingcement = hard core
  8. Someone who knows told me it is pronounced that way rather than like the car.
  9. Chocran made the mistake of making Brooks angry
  10. MD is just so bad, it is hard to draw any conclusions.
  11. Isn't dastardly a great word? I have a favorite author who writes a daily newsletter in my industry. My life's goal has been to get quoted by him in the newsletter. No matter how many times I emailed him he never quoted me in the newsletter (though he always replies to emails). Meanwhile, I did an interview with a reporter for another industry publication. I caught myself about to swear. I did not want to swear, but the word was already formed in my head. I kind of did a mental double clutch and spit out "balderdash" instead of the word of my first instinct. Needless to say that got printed, because how can you not print a quote with balderdash in it? But to my eternal satisfaction, the quote also got picked up and used by my favorite newsletter author. I can die a happy man. Or at least I can die a happy man once I get everyone on this board to acknowledge the infallibility of all my arguments.
  12. Allow me to summarize the thread. When my school does approximately the equivalent to what your school does, my school does it for noble and virtuous reasons, while your school is being dastardly and underhanded.
  13. There are approximately 130 FBS programs with 85 scholarships per program. With 1,500+ in the transfer portal that comes out to ~14% of FBS athletes in the portal. If you expand the program sizes to include non-scholarship athletes you probably get another 20 - 25 per team (SWAG) putting the total at 110ish per team. Now your percentage in the portal goes down to ~10%. An FBS team might have ~33 starters. So scholarships outnumber starters by ~2.6:1. In wrestling it is almost 1:1. I am not sure what scholarship status does to incentives to enter the portal, but it seems like with more available you might be more inclined to look elsewhere, but with scarcity you might not? Just guessing. If that is the case you should expect fewer wrestlers to enter the portal. Maybe the total would be something like 5%, who knows. So every team would expect half of a starting wrestler to be in the portal (not sure what you do with the other half). But what the transfer portal really does is it levels the playing field. Rather than having athletes subject to exploitation through the equivalent of the reserve clause, they now have the ability to advocate for themselves and find their best place (or make mistakes, there will be a lot of mistakes). The smartest coaches will hire an assistant (or assign one where budgets are tight i.e. not football) to optimize the portal, just like they optimize recruiting. Any school not thinking about how to best interact with the portal will be passed on by. The old foggy fans will complain about how their school is virtuous when they have transfers and the other schools are mercenaries. Or they will start a thread about dumb rules to overlay on the portal to make things like they used to be.
  14. Sweet and naive. There are more than 1,500 FBS athletes in the transfer portal per The Athletic. The genie is out of the bottle. We all need to just get comfortable with change. Now get out there and snap up some NFTs, grandpa.
  15. Kind of ironic that the arguably toughest weight class in college is not that way because of contributions from the arguably toughest state for high school wrestling.
  16. I would think you can dream even bigger than that. Steveson with just a major doesn't seem the most maroon and gold glasses to me.
  17. I was reading the HR predictions page for this dual. It is interesting to see the range. Note: I am not looking to trash anyone's predictions. Predictions are fun. I am glad people are willing to go out on a limb and make them. 32-7 Iowa 28-6 Iowa 18-16 Iowa 18-17 Minnesota Wrestlestat has it at 25-11 Iowa. The HR predictions were all done assuming Drake Ayala would wrestle 125, but yesterday Iowa's probable line up listed Jesse Ybarra. That probably changes some of those HR predictions (or not, they are fans after all). The Wrestlestat prediction is done with Ybarra at 125. I think one prediction is safe and universal. Everyone is hoping to see Cassioppi v Steveson in Carver.
  18. In the heat of battle my father wove a tapestry of obscenity that, as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan.
  19. That doesn't mean what you think it means.
