  1. Ben Askren has officially announced his retirement from MMA. Ben said an MRI scan revealed that he needs a hip transplant and thus he thinks it is no longer possible to continue in MMA, hence his decision. I'm sure most would agree with me when I say that I think he made the right decision for his health (even ignoring the apparent hip transplant).
  2. CRITERIA 1. Has to be a senior 2. You need reasonable suspicion that they would fight, within the next couple of years. If they're returning world team members and world champions (Kyle, Zain, Richie Lewis), I think it's alright to assume they're going to stick to freestyle for some time. Here's my Top 5 http://mmasucka.com/2018/03/25/five-class-of-2018-wrestling-to-mma-prospects/ The only guy I think I dropped the ball with is Bryce Meredith, Willie Saylor claims he's going to fight. Thoughts?
  3. You guys have been awesome supporters of our podcast project. Thank you so much! Yesterday, we had the chance to talk with former NCAA champ Gregor Gillespie ahead of his return to the Octagon, and are happy to share it here. In addition to breaking down his fight prep, Gregor also talks about Penn State's dominance, and explains his unhealthy addiction to freshwater fishing. I'm not thrilled with the audio quality, but Gregor's the best, so it was worth the trade off. We're happy, as always, to share with y'all: SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/diplosport/diplosport-podcast-133-gregor-gillespie iTunes: apple.co/2bnO1ro Google Play: bit.ly/DiploSportGooglePlay
  4. We all know Dan Hodge (http://angrymarks.com/?ArticleID=11044) and Dan Gable (http://www.mmafighting.com/news/2012/6/16/3089271/dan-gable-mma-wrestling-should-work-together-more-ufc-news) are fans of MMA. But this week we also found out Cael Sanderson is also an MMA fan (http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/05/penn_states_cael_sanderson_is.html). I suppose we could have guessed as much because he has already worked out with Wanderlei Silva. (Check youtube.) In other news, on May 15 at Bellator 137, Darrion Caldwell made 135 and went on to beat fight veteran Rafael Silva. On May 16 at UFC Fight Night 66, Mark Munoz retired with a win in the Philippines, and Frankie Edgar beat Uriah Faber -- which likely earned him a title shot. On May 24 at UFC 187, Chris Weidman finished Vitor Belfort in the first round to retain the UFC belt, and Daniel Cormier finished Anthony Johnson in the third round to win the UFC belt. Johnson was gracious in defeat, putting the belt on Cormier. It's also easy to be happy for Cormier. He's overcome a lot of adversity, and it's great he's now champion of the world.
  5. How do you think who of MMA wrestlers can win medals at world championships or nationals???? Khabib Nurmagomedov? Tony Ferguson, Chad Mendes, Chris Weidman, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Cain Velasquez etc....(without which Olympic wrestlers in MMA, Lindland, Cormie, Makhov etc)
  6. Check out this cool new I found from the Gotham City takedown tournament that was held in March. Has some familiar faces in it. I saw Bellator fighter Brenan Ward as well as 2x All American Walter Peppelman. Pretty cool stuff here. https://vimeo.com/125527340

  8. http://www.flowrestling.org/coverage/251734-Wrestling-News-and-Updates/article/28451-Gavin-vs-Ruth-Molinaro-vs-Maynard-Slated-for-FPL-2#.VEqhVb6aQ7R - I don't find either one of these match-ups particularly interesting. Thoughts?
  9. The board's slow lately so I thought I'd throw this out there. Apparently Cormier is getting a lot of love as a fighter. San Jose is where Cormier has lived and trained for a while. Cormier will also be fighting Jon Jones at UFC 178 at the end of September. Apparently, there was a UFC event last night at the SAP Arena in San Jose. When a promo went on for UFC 178, it showed both Jones and Cormier. The crowd began chanting "DC, DC" and looked to Cormier, who was there working as a Fox commentator. Cormier's colleague Brian Stann said it gave him chills. It's a pretty nice thing for Cormier. He's always been an outstanding wrestler and humble guy. I always thought the wrestling community unfairly criticized him after he was unable to compete in Beijing. So I like seeing him get lots of love. He deserves it. https://twitter.com/arielhelwani/status/493261783612678144 https://twitter.com/arielhelwani/status/493261934611816450 The connection to international wrestling is Cormier's reception among fans from 2008 to now. In 2008, of course, his fans were only the wrestling community.
