Pan Am's on ESPN3

Recommended Posts

Not too many world champs in this event and yet tournament organizers put Burroughs match on the non-streamed mat. Perfect example of why wrestling will never gain traction. Can't even showcase the biggest star in the tournament. The fact only one mat is streamed is the first joke. Wrestling people at the highest level always manage to get in their own way. What a complete joke.

Z. Rey beats Cuba 2-0. One point for shot clock and one pushout.

Rey is boring even for a heavy, most action of the match was the ref slapping their hands for interlacing fingers.

Snyder up now v. VEN.

Metcalf definitely got out-slicked.  Gomez definitely got out-horsed.  Throw in a semi-confused ref and it was a very interesting match to watch.  Keeping track of the scoring was a tad difficult as the announcers were basically clueless.....

1st period: 2-2

As far as I could tell the scoring went as follows.  Gomez scored first about 1/2 way through the first with a nice angled double.  Metcalf almost hipped him over for two but had to give up the 2 after Gomez adjusted. It also looked like the mat ref tried to award a point to Gomez for what Metcalf was doing on bottom after the takedown.  Since the score didn't change I don't believe a 2nd ref verified.  Metcalf tied it up with a high crotch attempt that ended up more like a snatch single that he transitioned into a double.

2nd period:8-6   Metcalf wins 10-8

Gomez hit a nice low shot and immediately transitioned into a leg lace for 4 total points to take a 6-2 lead.  After a bunch of hand fighting Gomez gets warned twice for his hands to the face and Metcalf is awarded a point to make it 6-3.  Gomez shortly thereafter gets in deep on a single and a scramble ensued with Gomez inevitably getting 2 before Metcalf scores 1 on a reversal to make it 8-4.  Metcalf gets a deep gut in but Gomez graps his kneepad to keep from going over.  U.S.A. challenges and the referee awards Metcalf a restart in the top position.  Metcalf then hits two guts to score 4 points and tie the match at 8-8 with less than 30 secs remaining.  Having scored last Metcalf is winning and Gomez tries to attack and ends up getting taken down again to lose 10-8!

Gomez looked (shockingly to me) bigger than Metcalf. Gomez was taller and looked way broader than I recall thru the chest and shoulders.

Just go to the Pan Am official site, Toronto2015.org. Click on wrestling, the date, and it shows every single match, score, time, which mat, etc.

Didn't get to watch any today, but the scores make it look like Salas had a close one with the Canadian in the first round, 7-4. Herbert's wins have been more decisive. On the same line of thought, Rey has won close matches while Jarvis from Canada has dominated and scored. Lot of points.

Snyder and Burroughs dominating. Surprised to see Cortina lose first round and be eliminated, that bronze from last year is looking weaker every time out. I was right about Lopez being no match for Burroughs, 13-3. Let's go for the clean sweep tonight boys!

Remember when the wrestlers would take turns reaching into a bag to blindly select a ball, which would determine who could grab the other one's leg?

I'm loving the current rules. I'm glad UWW changed the rules to reward offensive wrestlers. Now if the NCAA only had the guts to do the same.

I know, what is this? A lot of us want to support and follow the highest level of wrestling in this country (Team USA). We buy tickets for local tournaments, buy merchandise, many will fly out to Vegas, we pay for Flo memberships, etc. And here they are competing with pretty much all our # 1 wrestlers at a big event, and we can't follow any wrestling on the other mat.

Are the logistics too difficult, is it a finance thing?  (Ok, got that off my chest.)

Anyway, at least they've been showing all the medal matches. That's been good.
