Seventh as a team

With the double Bronze system, the US should be getting a piece of at least 6 weight classes if not more. Meaning we should have 4 or 5 medals of any color, with 5th places interspersed. Folkstyle isn't the enemy, it's not being able to adapt that is hurting.

This is a ridiculous post.  When have we come close to having a medal in 75% percent of the weights in the past 20 years?  We took 3 medals in 7 weights in '12 and it was our best showing in a long time. Folkstyle doesn't hurt us..yeah, that makes a lot of sense.  Lets force our athletes until they are 22 to work on a style that nobody else in the world does..Then lets ask them to transition to a style everyone else has been doing since age 5.  That's a recipe for success!

folk style killed the olympic dream...

this wont change until we change it... i ma seriously considering not having my kids wrestle the boring style in high school and just focus on what really matters...

You have to though.  If your kids are good enough to compete internationally for the US, they are good enough to earn a college scholarship.  That scholarship/education is very valuable.

all it is valuable for is a piece of paper... if you think our universities are about anything more than making money i feel sorry for you indeed... they are about making relationships... my feeling is that you can do that by competing and being relevant on the international stage in this sport just as well as you can by paying for a piece of paper...

This can be a discussion for another day, but you are off base here.  Doctor, Lawyer, Nurse, Pharmacist, finance, engineer, etc, 90% of "good" jobs require a university education.  If you are going to do the freestyle only route, you better be a Cejudo...We have seen a number of talented guys (mccauley, Downey, etc) not make the international stage.  That is why folkstyle is such a shame...We force our athletes to choose between their education and the ability to compete with the rest of the world.

Didn't both of our champs win their first World Gold a few months after wrestling an NCAA season?

Yes, but this is not good evidence for folkstyle being good for freestyle.  Snyder took an entire year doing freestyle prior to his freshman season, and then had some difficulty adjusting to folkstyle.  The 3 months he focused on folkstyle isn't what won him the world medal.  Burroughs may have won a title at age 21 if he had been doing freestyle his entire life.

Then you have guys like metcalf, Herbert, and Ramos who as a fan you have to admire greatly for their effort, but they simply don't look comfortable wrestling freestyle.

Freestyle is largely a takedown game as is our folkstyle. The styles aren't so dramatically different that we shouldn't be in the hunt to place wrestlers in the top 6 (Gold, Silver, 2 Bronze, and 2 5th placers) in 6 of 8 weights. The true enemy is blind draw and only losers to finalists get drawn back in. Also, it isn't like our kids wrestle folkstyle in a vacuum. Most have been doing freestyle throughout their careers.

the true separation in freestlye comes from par terre... folk does nothing but hurt that aspect of the US's game...

what was the deciding factor of Lee's junior gold?

the fact that he went from takedown to exposure immediately...

that is where we should be heading as a country...

par terre is the difference between good and great...

folk does fuk all to promote effective par terre offense...

and we will suffer internationally until that changes...

folk style killed the olympic dream!
