Projecting the Olympic Trials field: 86kg

Recommended Posts

According to a thread on College Wrestling, Gabe Dean will not take an Olympic Redshirt this year. Not sure how it will affect his preparation for the upcoming Freestyle season.

Yeah, it seems like it's getting a little late if he's going to announce at this point.  I changed the projection to guess Dean gets in by winning NCAAs and Keddy now gets in through the qualifier and joins the bracket instead of Brown.

Looks like Ruth has to one of the favorites here again. If he's on, he can just keep scoring. (Gold yesterday at the Farrell, and not forgetting when he beat Cuba's Salas in a shootout.)

We'll see if Herbert can defend his American title.

Will be interesting to see how the jail breakers from 74 fare up at 86. Don't know if Dake has the frame for this weight, but maybe with a little more time he can fill into this weight effectively. Whatever happens, it will be fun to watch Kid Dynamite up at 86 (if he stays up there).

Taylor looks like he has the right frame to handle this weight, and should be one of the favorites IMO. (Wonder how he did against Ruth when they were in the same wrestling room.)

Foster, Reader, and some others in the field are no joke either. Don't know who's going to win, but the 86kg Trials are going to have some serious fireworks in that bracket.

Saw this on the Maryland Forum site.  It notes Downey ISU 2nd semester????

Round 32: 9-5 Win over Gwan (Korea)
Round 16: 16-12 Loss vs Ryan Loder (USA)
Consi 16 #2: F 2:28 over Asadinia (Iran)
Consi 8 #1: 11-6 Win over Tyrell Todd (USA) 3x All American
Consi 8 #2: Def Win over Clayton Foster (USA) 2x All American, World Team Member
Cosni 4: 7-4 Win over Tyler Caldwell (USA) 4x All American, 2x NCAA Finalist
Consi Semis: 8-7 Loss vs Richard Perry (USA)

Very excited to see him join Iowa State second semester!  He definitely is capable of scoring points and hangs with some.   This is not too bad of a day with 7 matches against these guys.

Yeah, just read that on Flo right now.

Was going to say, I thought he looked like a different Herbert at World's than at the OTT's. Just couldn't put a finger on it.

Real tough break. Best of luck Jake, get well soon!

If Jake Herbert tore up his shoulder before the World's. And this story in Flo makes it seem like he's still pondering what to do here in November. And if that story's timeline is correct, why didn't Jake get this handled right after the World's ?

Also if that means that Jake may be out of commission or not at a 100%, it may mean that Ruth becomes the heir apparent. Now who presents a challenge to Ruth? Well it could be a whole list of people, many have been mentioned in this discussion.

Lastly, looking forward to seeing how David Taylor and Clayton Foster do in Azerbaijan and Caldwell does in France, later this month. If these three do well or poorly it will give us lots to speculate about. Obviously, I hope that all three kick some major butt and makes the conversation really heat up, as opposed to the latter.

Have to congratulate Kyle Dake again. Wow, after watching Dake's close semi final against Reader, and Taylor's tech of Perry in his semi, thought that Taylor would just be too big for Dake and finally out horse him this time. Kid Dynamite was having none of it. KD is incredible.

Will be interesting to see how much muscle Kyle can put on in a few months. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me, Kyle looked like a weight class lower than everyone else at 86 yesterday, yet he still runs the table.

Would have been so cool if Taylor or Dake entered the Yarygin as a USA 86 rep. Would love to see their styles against all these fireworks in Krasnoyarsk. Also, great gauge as to where you are in the world, IMO.

As far as the Trials, Dake should be # 1 seed and Taylor # 2, based on the past nationals, right?

Has to be Herbert if is healthy enough to show up for the trials/doesn't have to petition.  Otherwise, yes.  Also, Dake and Taylor competing at Yarygin would have been a bad idea.  They both need to do everything they can to put on size at the moment..Going to Russia only to wrestle a match or two would not have been worth it.  Think about how good the Russians are to begin with...then factor in the added disadvantage of being on their turf/dealing with their officiating.

The recent nationals were not a genuine nationals, but instead an Olympic trials qualifier using the name of "nationals" because most people were there.  No automatic seeds were earned there.  Being our national team rep and/or qualifying the weight gets you the top seed.
