All Homegrown DI team

Recommended Posts

LkwdSteve brought up an interesting topic.  Put together a team of wrestlers whose hometowns are within 40 miles of the DI school.  Of course, I did MSU(helps to be centrally located).  Not surprisingly, they would have one hell of a team if they could gobble up all the local talent.

*Admittedly, a couple of guys would need to take a very straight helicopter flight to stay within 40.

Per WrestlingReport rankings:

125: #5 Youtsey-Parma, MI

133: Not aware of a DI starter from the area

141: #21 Zac Hall-St. Johns, MI

149: #10 Alec Pantaleo- Canton, MI

157: #59 Roger Wildmo- Durand, MI-Sad to say he may be a prime example of why not to go to MSU

Although I would love to see him rebound for his senior season!

165: #? Massa-St. Johns, MI- Although it looks unlikely I hope he can find his way.

174: #15 Weatherspoon- Jackson, MI

184: #1 Dean-Lowell, MI

197: #25 Shawn Scott- Holly, MI

285: #2 Coon-Fowlerville, MI

3 high AA's with a chance of 2 Champs.  I would say they also would have a chance to sneak in 3 more AA's between Pantaleo, Weatherspoon and a healthy, motivated Massa.

Going by the numbers I would say 60 is expected with a high end of around 80.

I'd like my chances with D2 East Stroudsburg as it includes pretty much all of PA's District 11 and Blair Academy.

D1 Lehigh (as the crow flies) is pretty much the same deal.

Cheaters.......;)

Princeton and Rutgers wouldn't be too much different. although you're still getting 2 major metro areas and a 3rd minor metro, so i'm not sure that's in keeping with the spirit of the exercise. Columbia would would pull from the largest total population in the US. I think it would be able to contend with Cleveland and Pittsburgh for wrestling talent, although they former schools would surely win the per capita battle.

Adding a few more names to the "Pitt roster":

Pitt

125 Nico Megaludis (Dalton Macri, Dom Forys)

133 Geoff Alexander (Beckman grew up 80 miles away) (Connor Schram, Mackenzie McGwire)

141 Jimmy Gulibon (Evan Henderson, Tyler Smith)

149 Mike Racciatto or Solomon Chisko

157 Jason Nolf (Austin Matthews 80 miles away)

165 Cody Weicioch

174 ???

184 Lorenzo Thomas or Matt McCutcheon

197 Zack Zavatsky

HWT John Rizzo

Racciato and Rizzo are both out of range.  Racciato is from Pen Argyl, outside Allentown -- 5 hrs away from Pitt.  Rizzo is from Johnstown, about 75 miles from Pitt.

174 would've been Tyler Wilps last year.  There are no returning NQs from the Pittsburgh area at 157-174.

Most of the St Paris Graham wrestlers could be eligible for Ohio State if the boundary was extended out to perhaps 60 miles (as the crow flies). I keep it at strictly 40 miles for CSU, since much further isn't local, per se.

I figured within Illinois, within Michigan, the WPIAL, and around the PA/NJ border area, some schools could "represent". Maybe some other areas I hadn't thought of.

I tried adding up the number of NCAA qualifiers in each metro area over the last 5 years. An inexact science but the top 5 cities were NYC, Philly, Chi, Cle & Pitt in that order.

just last year here are the biggest "clusters" of All Americans according the however the program I used figured out how to map the clusters:

EMU has Shayne Wireman listed at 133 I believe he could win the starting spot over Pizzuito

paboom,

Not sure about this year but last year (off the top of my head) you would have had A.J. Schopp, Tyrone and Mitchell Port, Bellefonte.

This year I haven't found any ranked wrestlers who's H.S. is within 40 miles of State College.

Zach Beitz (Juniata) is probably good enough to be ranked.  Wrestlestats has him at #10 at 157 but it is expected he will be behind Nolf.  I don't have anyone else off the top of my head.

I was trying to think of some random PA spots outside the WPIAL and Lehigh Valley.  Bucknell (maybe Bloomsburg) has Zain Retherford and Nate Brown- both ranked #2.  You might be able to find a couple more guys to get a decent team.

While we are in waiting mode, here is the area's (Cleveland State's) hypothetic all-homegrown team, the qualifiers, for 2016:

125 1-Nate Tomasello, LJ Bentley

133 6-George DiCamillo, 10-Johnni DiJulius

141 1-Dean Heil

149 11-Anthony Collica, Nick Barber

157 16-Markus Scheidel

165 No qualifier

174 7-Cody Walters

184 4-Dom Abounader, Alex Utley, Andrew Romanchik

197 11-Phil Wellington, Sam Wheeler

285 3-Ty Walz, Billy Miller

5 fewer qualifiers than last year's #1 team, that put up 101.5 points in the NCAAs, of which 89.0 counted for "team" scoring, and had 5AAs.

Can they win again or will they get slayed by Pitt (or someone else)?

MSU:

125: Youtsey for sure, #13 Lambert would have to take a beeline helicopter ride to comply.

133: Eicher

141: #13 Bleise

149: #5 Pantaleo

157: Andrew Morse

165: Dakota Juarez lives 90 miles away

174: Weatherspoon

184: #1 Dean

197: Scott or Abro

285: #5 Coon

It helps that MSU is centered in the state with most major metropolitan areas being close by. Also, a true indictment of how bad MSU recruiting is when not one of these guys wrestles for them!

Slightly off topic - but only slightly because the topic is "All Homegrown D1 Team"

Minnesota's NCAA team is 100% home grown, no fiction needed in this lineup:

Thorn - St. Michael, Minn.

Short - Inver Grove Heights, Minn

Wanzek - Inver Grove Heights, Minn

Pfarr - Le Sueur, Minn

Kroells - Belle Plaine, Minn
