Ali Nasar

Naser is a beast. Beat Coleman Scott at the 2015 U.S. Open and then went wire to wire with Alan Waters in the quarterfinals. That kid is an absolute stud. This year or next, ASU landed a really great wrestling recruit.

Any insight on where this kid came from? The only high school credentials I've heard is he took 4th at states. Is this true? Some quite remarkable performances recently compared to his high school results if that's the case. He is legit.

A few Fargo All-American finishes in Free and GR, University Freestyle All-American, California Community College champ, two-time California placer. His story sounds to me as if he's one of those guys who is a "late bloomer", if you will, and that his best days remain ahead of him instead of having been Mr. Everything in high school. Good luck to the kid. He's really fun to watch.

Naser's senior of HS he lost to Javier Gasca twice at the State tournament (quarters and for 3rd).

Gasca wrestles 133 for MSU (Gasca's loss in the semis was to Paul Fox, who now wrestles for Stanford). Aaron Pico was the State champ at the weight.

As a junior, he was hurt prior to the post-season and didn't have an opportunity to go to State. His soph year he placed 7th at State.

He wrestled out of the LA Section, which for years had 1 rep per weight at the State tournament (the Section now has 2). The City Sections are not very good. LA is improving, but Oakland and SF are still not competitive.

Naser was born in one of the former Soviet Republics (either one of the "stans" or Azerbaijan, but not the Ossetias, Chechnya or Dagestan). He has been in Tempe since the summer and gets great workouts and partners wrestling for the RTC. Alan Waters was in there for approx a week not too long ago, Stanford, the World Team and others have also trained at Riches since school began - his new Coach is pretty good, too.

During his freshman year of HS, he made it to State and was either Rd of 16 or medal round but lost before the podium.  He was at Alex Cisneros' weight twice and Aaron Pico's once. In a multi-class State, he may have been a multi-time State champ.

In California, he was a 3 time qualifier and 2 time placer.

What is the redshirtting situation with all of ASU's high profile freshmen?

Hall - not redshirting

Anthony Valencia - Olympic redshirting

Assuming they are regular redshirting: Zahid Valencia, Maruca, Shields, Benick.

Shields beat Oliver Pierce at the maroon/gold wrestleoffs. Villarreal also split with Kraus. Villareal was a grey shirt last year and could also be a red shirt candidate this year.
