Last AA for a school at a weight

Recommended Posts

It was mentioned on another thread that Nebraska has not had anyone on the podium at HWT for a while.

Led me to compile this list (for UNL) of the year of the last AA at each weight. It is very apparent that recent success for NU was between 157 and 197.

125 - Paul Donahoe 2008 3rd place (his second)

133 - Eric Montoya - 2016 5th place (have to go back to 133 for the previous)

141 - Matt Murray - 2004 2nd place

149 - Jordan Burroughs - 2008 3rd place

157 - James Green - 2015 3rd place (4th of 4 times on the podium, JB won it in 2009)

165 - Austin WIlson - 2016 7th place (JB won it before in 2011)

174 - Robert Kokesh - 2015 3rd place (3rd of 3 other recent Stephen Dwyer, Brandon Browne and Jacob Klein)

184 - TJ Dudley - 2016 2nd place (2nd of 2, others Josh Ihnen, Vince Jones and Travis Pascoe)

197 - Craig Brester - 2010 2nd place (3rd of 3, others BJ Padden 2x)

HWT - Tolly Thompson - 1998 3rd pllace (3rd of 3)

NU has had 6 AAs at 184, 7 at 174, and 9 at 197 since a HWT was on the podium.  There are also 9 at 157 (4x Green and Bryan Snyder plus NC JB) in that timeframe.

Anyway,  though it was interesting. Curious if there was a change in assistants at the lower weights.

Cornell has never had an AA at HWT? That is a shock.

Prior to Spates' arrival in 1988, the Big Red only had 9 guys earn 11 AA honors from 1953-1981.

Spates picked up 5 AAs in 5 NCAA tourneys (1988-89 season through 1992-93 season).

Koll took it to the next level by getting 59 AAs in past 23 years, including:

  • current streak of at least 3 AAs every year since 2003
  • at least 4 AAs every year from 2005-2013

Can't believe TBar hasn't replied to this yet.  The Nits have managed to cover all weight classes with just a 3-year window.

Penn State:

125:  Nico Megaludis, 2016

133:  Jordan Conaway, 2016

141:  Zain Retherford, 2014

149:  Zain Retherford, 2016

157:  Jason Nolf, 2016

165:  David Taylor, 2014

174:  Bo Nickal, 2016

184:  Ed Ruth, 2014

197:  Morgan McIntosh, 2016

285:  Jimmy Lawson, 2015

Average for the ten weight classes:  2015.3

Here's another spin... Last champ at each weight for PSU.

125:  Nico Megaludis, 2016

133:  Sunny Abe, 1996  (126+7)

141:  Scott Lynch, 1984 (134+7)

149:  Zain Retherford, 2016

157:  n/a

165:  David Taylor, 2014

174:  Matt Brown, 2015

184:  Ed Ruth, 2014

197:  Quentin Wright, 2013

285:  Kerry McCoy, 1997

Oklahoma State (AAs):

125:  Eddie Klimara, 2015

133:  Jon Morrison, 2013

141:  Dean Heil, 2016

149:  Anthony Collica, 2016

157:  Joseph Smith, 2016

165:  Alex Dieringer, 2016

174:  Kyle Crutchmer, 2015

184:  Nolan Boyd, 2016

197:  Blake Rosholt, 2013

285:  Austin Marsden, 2016

Average for ten weight classes:  2015.2

Similar to what I posted for PSU... Oklahoma State's most recent champs:

125:  Teague Moore, 1998 (118+7)

133:  Jordan Oliver, 2011

141:  Dean Heil, 2016

149:  Jordan Oliver, 2013

157:  Alex Dieringer, 2014

165:  Alex Dieringer, 2016

174:  Chris Perry, 2014

184:  Jake Rosholt, 2004

197:  Jake Rosholt, 2006

285:  Steve Mocco, 2005

Ten weight class average:  2009.7

I'd bet OSU's average year for champs is better than the average AA year for 90-95% of the rest of Division I.  Admittedly, 6 of those weights are covered by 3 guys who won titles across multiple weight classes within the past 12 years (Rosholt, Oliver, Dieringer).

174: Alex Meyer (8th 2016)

184: Sammy Brooks (8th 2016)

197: Nathan Burak (4th 2016)

285: Bobby Telford (5th 2015)

Ten weight class average for most recent AA: 2014.7

Most recent champ:

125: Matt McDonough, 2012

133: Tony Rahmos, 2014

141: Cliff Moore, 2004

149: Brent Metcalf, 2010

157: Derek St. John, 2013

165: Mark Perry, 2008

174: Jay Borshel, 2010

184: Royce Alger, 1988 (177+7)

197: Lee Fullhart, 1997 (190+7)

285: Steve Mocco, 2003

Ten weight class average: 2005.9

This isn't a very good showing for the Hawkeyes if they want to sell Iowa City as the destination if you want to become an NCAA champ.

Updated to correct 133 and 157, and McD's 2nd title.
