Mongolia Day 3 (men's freestyle)...draw & discussion

Recommended Posts

I'm unfamiliar with most of the names in Frank's bracket. Any help on who the favorites may be?

Safaryan is a former world champ.

Batirov is a former European champion and 3x Yarygin champion.

Habat wrestled for Edinboro.

Garcia has wins over top Americans.

Gor is a two-time world medalist.

I know Habat. A world champ and multiple time Yarygin champ? Yikes.

Luckily Molinaro woudn't hit Safaryan until he's already qualified the spot. Gor will be a tough test in the second round. Getting past Batirov in the semis will be a tall order, too.

Dolly wrestles for Ireland.

Habat wrestles for Sovenia.

Palacio wants to wrestle for Uruguay.

Gomez won a medal for Puerto Rico and he may have been able to compete for the US instead.

Palacio, I gather, at least has Uruguayan grandparents. I doubt the Russian's grandparents hail from Bahrain or that he has ever lived there.

The thing about all these credentials is that they are mostly old. If any of these guys were worldbeaters now they would not be in this tournament.

i understand the whole dual citizenship thing. Just interesting how the best wrestling country on the planet finds ways to get more athletes competing at the highest level. Bahrain, e.g.

NJDan, Safaryan won worlds in 2013 and is only 26. So he must still have skill.

Don't forget Novochkov for Bulgaria.  And Matt Gentry repped Canada not so far back in the day.

Well hopefully both Guys can win their first match and get on a roll from there. I'm not sure what happened to Theilke the other day, I thought he was much better than his opponent, but the other guy was just able to continuously sustain his attack and ultimately put the match in the victory column for him. So whatever that was, (Jet lag, a weight issue, or maybe not being warmed up enough or correctly), but hopefully that doesn't happen today. All we can do now is just hope that our guys wrestle well.
