2019-2022 Championship Sites

Recommended Posts

Vegas would be cool. the 2016 UWW worlds was excellent, even though it was held away from the strip. that actually made it more fun, as all the wrestling people were concentrated around a couple hotels and weren't lost in the crowd. my biggest mistake was staying at a big hotel on the strip anyway. didn't get much out of the hotel or location and in fact there is no uber in Vegas (don't know if that's changed) and the cab stands were hell. the cab stands were the worst part of Vegas by far. boo to shameful Vegas cab stands.

anyway, yes I would enjoy an NCAA tournament in Vegas.

None of the Phoenix arenas have enough floor area to host an NCAA tournament. Atlanta was at St. Louis prior to putting it's bid in. Tulsa was working with OSU on a bid according to John Smith. I wrote a very nasty letter to the mayor of OKC after the last tournament, it was forwarded, and I was not satisfied with the reply I received.

FWIW, April 18 appears to be the target date for future site information.

"...next week our various sports committees will begin making championships site selections for 2018-2022 based upon bids received from across the country. Once the sites are selected by the committee, those decisions are final and an announcement of all sites will be made on April 18."

What would be the Las Vegas venue? The new T-Mobile arena or something different?

Good question. The Pac-12 scheduled their men's basketball tournament at the T-Mobile arena a couple of weeks ago and the fan feedback has been quite positive. I'm not sure there's enough floor space for an NCAA tournament, though. Wasn't the last freestyle event in Vegas at a converted rodeo site off-strip?

I stayed at the Excalibur and just walked every session, because why?  YOU CAN DRINK BEER OUTSIDE!  Couple that with YOU CAN DRINK BEER AT A WRESTLING EVENT and it was an enjoyable, but blurry time.  Quite blurry...

There is definitely UBER in Las Vegas. Used it multiple time in December for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

I'm surprised that if Detroit is being considered, Chicago isn't turning in a bid. Illinois is the second largest wrestling state (participant-wise) behind California. They're hosting the Frozen Four this year and United Center can handle the crowds. No offense to Detroit, but if Chicago can host NCAA events (gymnastics next year), someone can put in for rasslin'.

yeah I probably should have just hoofed it. I was next door to you at the Luxor, which should be renamed the Suxor, because the hotel, in fact, very much sucks.

one of my favorite moments of the Worlds was standing in line to buy beer with a guy in a Kazakhstan warm up suit. we couldn't communicate hardly at all but I think I gave him the thumbs up after he got his beer and he laughed. something about sharing a laugh over beers with a wrestling coach from Kazakhstan in Vegas just made my day.

Why wouldn't T-Mobile have enough floor space.  It will be the home for an NHL franchise.

Columbus, Ohio has two arenas with a seating capacity in excess of 18,500 that are less than 20 years old. Both are modern facilities that have ice rinks and can host basketball games, concerts, and multiple sell out events; neither can host the NCAA wrestling championships under current conditions.

Nationwide Arena (18,500) is the home of the Blue Jackets, but can not be used because the floor cannot be configured for enough mats.

Schottenstein Center (18,809) has the ability to configure the floor for all mats, but is disqualified because it is on the Ohio State campus.

Would love to see a return in 2029 for the 100th anniversary of the 1929 NCAA Championships held at the Ohio Exposition Center, capacity 5003; but it is never going to happen without a major renovation to Nationwide or a change in philosophy by the NCAA.

Phoenix would be, but finding a hotel room during that time of year is brutal.

MLB Spring Training brings in a lot of people (and money) to PHX in March.

Simply not true.  Phoenix is the 5th or 6th  largest city in the nation and a large part of revenue is generated from tourism.  There are plenty of hotels and motels to accommodate everyone. The city has hosted many events much larger than the NCAA Wrestling Championships and done just fine.

As long as Cleveland doesn't have a late winter, next year will be a great atmosphere.   Lots of bars, restaurants and even casinos within walking distance.

Hopefully we can get a bookie to take some prop bets-

- Does Terry get tossed (again) in the finals?

- Over/under how many times Cael uses the word "fun" in interviews.

- Pick the correct year Lakewood St Edwards amazing AA streak finally ends (a bet for the local Cleveland wrestling fans)
