Tofurky 611 Report post Posted February 21, 2017 Nearly half of all NCAA wrestling programs exist in Division 3. This is where the sport is going to continue to grow and the support of the wrestling community is crucial. 3 Yellow_Medal, JBluegill133 and KTG119 reacted to this

aknipp 131 Report post Posted February 22, 2017 Do DIII programs still enter into a lot of open tournaments ? My 1st match in college was against the defending B10 champ from the UI when we went to (back then) the St Louis open.

legendofandy 41 Report post Posted February 22, 2017 There are 100 teams in DIII this year. Two teams (Penn College of Technology & Alfred State) are in the transitional period to become postseason-eligible, while three teams (Averett, Penn State-Behrend, and Westminster) are set to begin competition next season. Ohio Wesleyan just announced today their intention to begin competition in 2018-2019. 2 KTG119 and Jaroslav Hasek reacted to this

Those are the areas that need growth in the sport and a solid college team or five could be the impetus.

Jaro - Just FYI: W&L was a question on Jeopardy last night. And it had nothing to do with the line on the sidewalk separating it from VMI.
MadMardigain 1,594 Report post Posted February 22, 2017 Do DIII programs still enter into a lot of open tournaments ? Yes many still do. LeFever mentioned above has had a decent amount of success against DI competition the last couple years.
mh1 2 Report post Posted February 23, 2017 LeFever could be 4 time undefeated against DIII. Would match Marcus LeVesseur who was 155-0 although Marcus never lost to a DI wrestler. Anyway you look at it he is poised to make history. His brothers were pretty good as well.

Agreed; wrestling could use programs in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana. Heck, even a D3 in Missouri would be solid option. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_III_institutions - if this link is accurate, the one thing that stinks is that there are so few options west of the Mississippi, south of Iowa. Ohio Wesleyan just announced today their intention to begin competition in 2018-2019. Alfred State (a State University of New York Technical College) and Penn College of Technology (a division of Penn State) are great schools, especially for students who like to get their hands dirty and don't thrive in the more traditional academic environments. We lose a lot of college wrestlers because the college academics are not for them but these schools would be a great fit for a lot of kids and give them the chance to compete. 1 Jaroslav Hasek reacted to this

They need to revisit these regionals they have set up. Some regions have 13 teams others 19 and 20 It was supposed to happen for this year, but it didn't. Also, only 18 qualifiers for 100 teams? Break it up into eight qualifiers and take the top three or four, seeding the champions of each qualifier. 100 teams with five more on the way in the next two seasons? Reward these teams for keeping the sport alive.
