Earned an AQ for Conference, but need an At-Large Bid

Recommended Posts

LIKELY At-Large bids from the above "AQ List" based on :

1) High previous Coaches Ranking (and/or)

2) Placing 1 spot outside qualifying criteria

125 (6 At-Large bids available)

Suriano (Penn St.) - DNP in Big 10 (7) ; #2 CR

Townsell (Stanford) - 4th in PAC (1 AQ) ; #12 CR

Gonser (E. Michigan) - 6th in MAC (5) ; #19 CR

Fleetwood (C. Michigan) - 7th in MAC (5) ; #17 CR

Noah Baughman (Cornell) has wins over Terao, Piccinnini, and Rodriguez (all AQ?), and placed 3rd with 2 @125 from EIWA, so he has Bronze.  Best quality wins of any of those (save Suriano, of course).  26-13 record. Issue is he has no direct h2h matches with the other contenders, and his w-l record against common opponents is poorer.  Hopefully after taking third this weekend, his CR will improve.

Thoughts?

Mancini did not earn an AQ for the Tournament, was not Ranked by the Coaches, and did not place at EIWA.

Unlikely to get an At_Large bid IMO.

yeah, too bad - a win in the 1st round of Midlands might have helped

There are 6 At-Larges available.  Beyond the 4 likely candidates I listed above, Jiminez (#21 CR) & Baughman (#32 CR, quality wins, 3rd @ EIWA) would be the next likely candidates.  I think Baughman will get in, but just barely.

These guys are devastated right now.

Wert, 125

Gomez-Rivera, Kelly 133

Richards, 157

Viruet, Marinelli 167

Barnes, 174

Viruet and Marinelli are 2lbs overweight. They should not be devastated.

Interesting to note that of the 53 At-Large bids given today, 40 of those wrestlers (75%) had earned AQ's for their respective Qualifier.

Non-AQ's who earned bids (13):

Barone & Shoop (149), Fox & Sparkman (157), Mejias & Burcher (165), Reenan (174), Corba & Fagg-Davies & Hoffman (184), Hemida & Jennings & Parker (285).

Moral of the story ?  Tough to get an At-Large bid unless you go into your Qualifier with an AQ.

Well, that seems like how it should work.  If you didn't earn a qualifier yourself or outwrestle someone who did at conferences, you should have an uphill battle to get one.

Well put. My version:

Earn the spot, then defend it.

If you fail, pray that no one else "stole spots" in the other qualifying tourneys.
