Perry 1,428 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 Didn't take long to go from getting a no from bono to a yes from Gavin. Hopefully the hire works out well for both Pitt and Gavin 1 Erminio8 reacted to this

Chrissn2001 81 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I think Gavin will do a good job at recruiting first/second tier WPIAL kids and 3rd tier PA kids, which will be solid recruits. I think he'll be okay and probably make 99% of Pitt supporters happy.

Not every kid can go to Penn State, there's only so many spots. 1 Chrissn2001 reacted to this

Pinnum 840 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I am most curious on what the staff will look like. What assistants will he bring in. It appears they didn't make a financial commitment to the head coach position so I wonder if they will put more money into assistant salaries and attempt to build a long term staff. Eagle26 598 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I am happy for Gavin. He's not quite the big name or established coach some were hoping for, but I think he will do a great job! He seems like a sharp guy, he is an excellent technician, and he has worked hard to improved his wrestling (not just a natural talent so he understands development). It's a little more of a risk to take chance on a less experienced coach, but I think Gavin has what it takes and could be a great long term coach for them. IronChef 1,097 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I would think the current assistants, who were both his teammates in college, will stand a good chance to be retained.
Jasonmitchell32 244 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 Hmmmm Nice job stating the obvious - especially when he had already interviewed when you posted the first one. My take - I wish we would have made the choice earlier so that we wouldn't have looked like knuckleheads throughout the process. Here is what I believe to be fact from those that I know are very close to the situation - Santoro was approached immediately after the season ended. A group of alumni worked with the committee and everyone was on board with a full court press to get Pat. Money was raised and committed. It was discussed with Pat and he agreed to come out and interview with the hopes that everything would be in order and he'd sign and be announced as the new coach. He was prepared to do that. This was all before Lyke was hired. She then gets hired, hears "the plan" and says - hold on - we need to talk to others. Unfortunately - rather than tap the brakes and bring in Pat a bit later, they still bring him in, but she is now not prepared to pull the trigger like we wanted, and he leaves with no offer. In the meantime - LU does the right thing to keep their coach. This is where the scramble starts and the coaching world was Askern and we obviously got out-scrambled. In the end - I'm really really glad we had a guy like Gavin willing to sit and wait to see what happened with the others b/c I think he can be a very good coach. He could also be the next Stottlemyer - which doesn't get us anywhere near Beyer than what we've been. Jasonmitchell32 244 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I would think the current assistants, who were both his teammates in college, will stand a good chance to be retained. Maybe not. I'm hearing they want a "clean house" moving forward and that was made clear to KG. GuyuteThePig HTP Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
