wrestlingnerd 2,593 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Brian Smith, Missouri. Apparently, you can't be COTY more than once every five years, so the real COTY (Cael0 wasn't eligible for the award.
MACTruck 5 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 (edited) Thats very classy ,who said the winning team had to have coach of the year ,Missouri riddled with injuries Breaks MAC scoring record has a wrestler win third title "most in team History " and has three finalist "most in team history" and places top five in the tournament all without an olympic gold medal winning coach to use for recruiting EVERYONE. wrestlingnerd 2,593 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 (edited) MAC, I'm a big fan of Brian Smith. But let's be real. This year was by far Cael's finest hour, which is saying something given all the hardware he has accumulated. If that wasn't a COTY-worthy performance, I don't know what is. I realize this sounds like a dig on Smith, but that's not what I intended. Cael was just that good this year. 21guns 95 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Casey Cunningham. By FAR the best assistant coach in the nation, and I mean BY A MILE.
LHN94 82 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Casey Cunningham. By FAR the best assistant coach in the nation, and I mean BY A MILE. Does Cunningham get head coaching offers? Does he want to be a head coach? Is he waiting for his alma mater to open up?
MACTruck 5 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Well CAEL may have had his finest Hour but he also had COTY recently ,his finest hour was winning the gold though because without it I doubt he has the following or the team he has now .No denying Penn State was very impressive and stold the show as expected .Did everyone think Mizzou would have 3 finalists and reclaim their top 5 spot ?not so sure .If not Smith Kolat anyway . Fishhook 142 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Casey Cunningham. By FAR the best assistant coach in the nation, and I mean BY A MILE. Tervel might be one of the biggest reasons why Kyle Snyder is the best wrestler in the world. Cunningham has yet to have a world champion at 19 in one of the hardest weights in the world for a 19 year old to win. And J Jaggers has a future as one of the best head coaches in the nation. That guy was and is money. And Terry Brands always has guys at those weights in the finals if not winning. There are tons of great assistants. And Cunningham is one of them. But Tervel needs recognized for what he has done: mentoring Kyle Snyder and likely Kollin Moore. 1 cjc007 reacted to this
LordNelson 539 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Cael is the COTY, don't care about any socialist rules. Asst. coach of the year is debatable. Could be Cunningham, could be Tervel or Jaggers, could be Terry.

MSU158 1,525 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 COTY is actually quite similar to judging a diving competition. Brian Smith is doing perfect dives, but the degree off difficulty(reasonable expectations) of these dives is rated lower. Cael may not be doing perfect dives(although pretty damn close this year) but he is diving with a considerably higher degree of difficulty. Simply put, it is a doing more with less argument. If you held Smith to the same standard as Cael he would never win. But, is it fair or reasonable to do so? Watching the Head Coaches Interview at NCAA's tells you all you need to know. You have Tom Brands, Tom Ryan, Cael Sanderson, John Smith and stuck in the middle was Brian Smith. Which of these guys doesn't belong?
wrestlingnerd 2,593 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 I am usually a big proponent of "doing more with less", but this year in particular, even with his filthy riches, Cael was deserving.

wrestlingnerd 2,593 Report post Posted March 23, 2017 I agree Kolat deserved votes. He might be the only guy as deserving, or more. That article about Campbell's huge year and where they were a couple of years ago was an unbelievable read. They had FIVE kids in the room in total!!
