gowrestle 689 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 Posts mention Brands, Dresser, Flynn, Ryan, Smith. But when the coach from Penn State is mentioned, they call him Cael. Very interesting...
headshuck 2,600 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) Tom, John, Terry, Bill, Brian, etc.... pretty common names so you use their last. Sanderson is common so you go with Cael. You might be overthinking it. When Cael gets a little older, they'll refer to him as CSan like JRob. But he hasn't earned it yet. headshuck 2,600 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 Siri and Apple dictation continues to refer to him as Carl so there's that. 4 Plasmodium, T-nigs23, Coach_J and 1 other reacted to this

It's mostly this, but if Penn State's head coach wasn't the greatest college wrestler of all time who won an Olympic gold then he would probably be referred to by his last name. Cael associates him with the competing legend he was, it's not a slight. Silly post, I feel silly responding.

hammerlockthree 2,635 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 they still called him cael when he was at Iowa city and was a fairly pedestrian head coach.
SetonHallPirate 990 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 they still called him cael when he was at Iowa city and was a fairly pedestrian head coach. Cael was never in Iowa City, except for recruiting visits and duals at Carver.
smcfee 76 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 Maybe it is as simple as "Cael" is quicker to type than "Sanderson"?
headshuck 2,600 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) In Minneapolis our jaws are usually so cold we use the shortest name possible. J is as short as we could go. Cael would become C. Edited April 5, 2017 by headshuck
RichB 227 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 Cael is no longer that rare a name. In fact I had to ask a friend what the words "Cael at basketball practice" meant on facebook. ------------- Of course, I have never met anyone, who saw Uetake compete, say Cael was the greatest college wrestler ever. PhiferFuqua 187 Report post Posted April 5, 2017 they still called him cael when he was at Iowa city and was a fairly pedestrian head coach. Three conference titles, three top five NCAA finishes and an average of five all Americans a year in his three years at Iowa State ... many coaches would gladly give up their last names and possibly a testicle or two if they could be that kind of pedestrian. 2 Husker_Du and TBar1977 reacted to this

His last name does contain three syllables. Might as well simplify.
