OhioSpladle 35 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 Forgive me for the random post, but I am young. In terms of the all time greats I had always heard bruce had to be mentioned due to longevity, but I had no idea how good he was. My gosh two Olympic Golds and three world golds. A 4x Olympic medalist...I think whats most impressive to me is after he takes Silver in 88, instead of retiring with an 84' Gold under his belt, he comes back and wins the rematch in the semis of the 92 Olympics to win Gold again. I just can't believe a guy that was winning an Olympic gold in 84' was winning a world title in 95... 2 mattchristensen112 and Abdullahgadzhi Khuzin reacted to this
Jasonmitchell32 241 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I love it that you're a younger guy and digging into some history - yes, BB was (is) a beast and often gets overlooked as an all-time great. MadMardigain 1,242 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 Aside from Larry Bird maybe the biggest name to come out of Indiana State University. Too bad they don't have a team anymore. Could have definitely draw from Indiana and Illinois. 1 websterk149 reacted to this

WillieBoy 713 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 He was very good for a long career. No argument there. In terms of America's best he is just below John Smith overall.
de4856 359 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 Willie Boy, I would have to disagree with you, John Smith and Bruce both have two Olympic Golds, John has 4 World Golds, and Bruce has 3. But even though Bruce is light by one World Gold, Bruce has a Olympic Siver, an Olympic Bronze, and has 3 World Silvers, and a World Bronze. So it's one World Gold verses two Olympic medals, and four World medals. So does one Gold beat all that? Not in my opinion.

Hubbard 426 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 He was a monster. The Big Cat Tom Erikson finally was able to rep. the US in 97 after Bruce hung them up. Tom could have done very well internationally as well, but he was in Bruce's shadow for many years.
WillieBoy 713 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 No, but six straight world titles does, I believe. This is why I put John Smith on top. Add in his style revolutionized the sport. Getting more controversial, many more top quality wrestlers in Smith's weight overall than with the big guys. 1 headache reacted to this
Heisenberg 18 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 Let's remember the 84 Olympics was boycotted. It is reasonable to think Baumgartner would only have one Olympic gold otherwise. That being said, yes Bruce is one of our best ever.
Vertical 4 Report post Posted April 19, 2017 Bruce also did a move called the "Trash Compactor" It sure made it easier to score.
